Death by Doctor!

Medical Negligence – Third Highest Cause of Death

According to the Journal of the American Association, death by medical treatment is the third highest cause of death in the United States! The United States Department of Health and Human Services declared that 15,000 medic-care patients die EVERY MONTH in the US by medical treatment! Every Month! Upon these number you wanna ask yourself why nobody seems to care about this fact, why the world is not screaming out loud? Why are you still going to a doctor if you know that doing so might be more hazardous to your health than getting a stroke or diabetes? Watch this video and you will understand a lot better what’s going on in the medical world. I personally find it intriguing, how Peter Glidden uses the exact same example that I used to give to people I am talking to about superfoods and healthy living.

If you own a good car, for example a Ferrari, you wouldn’t go and fill diesel oil in the tank, just because it is cheaper; would you? So why are you doing it to your body. If your car breaks down you can go and get a new one, but you will not be able to replace your body, once you ruined it!

Only YOU can Heal Yourself!

You are what you eat and it is even more important to eat and live healthy today than it ever was. Our environment becomes all ore aggressive toward our body, the air we breathe is polluted, the water we drink is poisoned with all kind of chemicals such as florid, which is a nerve poison. The food we eat is over fatted and enriched with large amounts of iodine and other chemicals and poisons. We need our body to be strong to survive and reproduce in this harmful world. Eat well and feel well. As I mentioned in my earlier article, we never had the chance to live as healthy as we can do today. Despite all the environmental factors, we can still get organic and healthy superfoods on our dinner table everyday. It’s your choice! As more people start to live healthy as bigger demand gets and as more farmers will be willing to go green again and produce organic and healthy foods. Once you stat living healthy, you simply won’t need to visit doctor death anymore and you won’t need to support the pharmaceutical industry any longer either as they are not far behind in the charts of causing death.

Something that indicates the effect of this death by doctor syndrome very clearly are the search numbers in the internet for phrases like medical negligence lawyers, 74,000 searches per month, medical negligence attorneys, 60,500 searches per month and medical attorney with 135,000 searches per month on Google. Well, this said; watch the video and you’ll understand why we still believe in medical doctors and think of them as gods in white.

Healty Foods and Superfoods – How Good Are They Really?

How Important are Healthy Foods?

Superfoods and Healthy Foods?Today these questions are easy to answer for me: Very good and very important! The few healthy foods we are still able to gather these days, play a major role for our overall health. And I'm not talking about superfoods only here; I'm talking about organic vegetables, leafy greens that haven't been sprayed with all kinds of toxins and have been feed with artificial fertilizers that consist only of the very basic nutrients. Organic carrots; when have You seen the last one? Organic eggs, if you're not a vegan, are very healthy food. The y consist out of almost pure protein! Organic spinach is very high on antioxidants and not only Popeye should be eating it. Spinach has also a lot of Lutein which can prevent blindness and muscular degeneration. The point is that no matter what you want to eat, you should try to get it organic! Even if you're still eating meat after all the bad news about what's in it; you can get organically grown meat and poultry without antibiotics for a slightly higher price.

Despite the little price difference and the bit more running around to find the right foods, you'll feel so much better after eating organic foods for a few month, you wouldn't believe it! Try it out and you will thank me forever! I'm doing this now since six month only, and I've seen changes happening on my body that are just sheer miracles. Besides that my skin cancer has vanished, and I hope forever, I have lost almost all my age warts and one big black mole in my face. the simply started to vanish over time. But this not all by a long shot!  My eyesight has gotten much better even though I'm still working on the computer for most of the day. It might be that one liter fresh carrot juice every day plays a big role in that. Overall; I'm feeling as good as when I was eighteen!

Eat lots of Healthy Foods and Superfoods

I'm eating the ideal dosage of about 30 gram of Goji berries every day, some goose berries in between and if I get hungry in the afternoon, I make a shake consisting of fresh coconut, a handful raw cacao nobs and a banana, that's pure energy! In the evening I'm on for a fresh salad, full of organic vegetables, holy basil, ginger, parsley and oregano. Other things that are regularly in my salads are cumin, thyme, red onions, cashew nuts, turmeric, fresh dill and whatever I can get fresh in the organic shop. In the end of the month I'm not more broke than when I was shopping in the supermarket without turning my brain on. Really, it doesn't make a difference at all! In the beginning that came to me a s a surprise but after a while I just found out that with the shift of priorities my financial situation hadn't changed much after six month, but my health had changed a lot!

So how important are healthy foods and superfoods? For me they have made all the difference they could make. After life had shown me the yellow card at the beginning of the year for being such a careless fool with my body, I've learned that the right nutrition might cost you a bit more money and quite a bit more time for food hunting and preparation, but the result is always worth the while. I'm far more active today than I was during the past five years and I'm also far more productive and far more successful with what I'm doing. I can truly recommend superfoods and organic foods to anybody who is willing to change their lifestyle. Once you find out for yourself what this does to your body and to your mind, you will never regret it!

Men’s Health Issues

Dealing with Health Issues is not our Strongest Point

Prostate Cancer with Gleason Pattern

Too often, as we age, we tend to become quite leery of visiting our physicians for regular checkups. Regrettably, though, we cannot always rely on the standard, “I feel fine – why see the doc?” Diseases, conditions, and chronic illnesses can wreak havoc for the health and even the life if they don’t manage to be detected and treated early on. Any health related journal or leaflet will tell you, after a specific age, women need to have annual mammograms, pap smears, and also the like, and men must have annual check-ups, as well. Particularly, the prostate have to be kept healthy, and yet too many men are reluctant to face this very real health issue.

It is quite unfortunate that this will prevent a lot of males in today’s society from addressing such an important health issue, however it is certainly true. How many women ought to prod their husbands to the point of exasperation to get them to visit a doctor for an illness, let alone a routine physical? The macho bravado a lot of display is really a sense of fear that something may truly be wrong with them, what if the doctor finds something wrong? What if there are more tests to be conducted to rule out the potential for that dreaded word: cancer? No one, to be honest, wants to find that they’re encountering an illness, nevertheless it is actually better to know than to be kept in the dark. This health issue is of such dire importance that men simply cannot ignore it, and yet they do.

Prostate cancer impacts millions of men the world over, and so many of these cases would have been prevented had the men heeded the recommendation of medical professionals. Why do men appear to ignore the necessity for this exam? Likely, it has to do with the private nature on the exam itself, many men simply have an exceptionally real embarrassment about having their genital areas probed and prodded in a doctor’s office. Whether the doctor is male or female may play a role, as some men are naturally uncomfortable having another man, albeit a doctor, a professional, examine these most private of areas, while others are genuinely skittish about having a female doctor do the same.

All in all, a health issue that can be taken care of quite easily with an annual, routine check-up is one which continues to be ignored by many males. Nobody can stress the need for preventative medicine enough to make men understand of the fact that embarrassment, the fear, the overall feeling of being uncomfortable, are all quite natural, but they must be overcome. To prevent or at least detect prostate cancer early is nowhere near as loathsome as having to go through surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Men, take control of your health, and don’t let this health issue be one that you just overlook.

Are You Eating The Right Foods?

We are Eating the wrong Foods!

Cheeseburger Unhealthy Food Kills UsAbout a half million people die from food containing 'toxic' nutrients every year. More than 100 million Americans are still at risk and it cost the nation over $100 billion dollars a year. And yet on a daily basis no one seems to butt an eyelid, despite it still being a serious major problem – an epidemic in fact. Obesity, and of the self inflicted causes of disease it is second only to smoking. Left to current trends it is soon to take the number one slot. And yet, if the same magnitude and loss of life was attributed to Mad Cows Disease in our food chain, there would be a public outcry.

I mean, how can we have more than 100 million web pages of information about superfoods, nutrients, diet plans, pills and potions on the Internet and yet be in the middle of an obesity crisis? The only conclusion I can think of is that diets don't work. And yet people are still paying for it in one of 2 ways; with their money or with their health. Diet companies are quite happy to take a dieter's money but are dependent on a dieter's failure for their very own survival. Some even say diets are designed to fail. And now, there is insurmountable evidence that many appalling diseases are related to inappropriate nutrition and obesity, and yet 60% of Americans take little notice of it.

Why? It is because the act of eating presents no emotion of fear or threat to life and we are in fact genetically programmed to simple eat! We are biological 'eating machines'. So who is responsible? The food manufacturers, the government or us – the individual. In simple terms we all have choices as to what we decide to put inside our own body in the form of food, and therefore the ultimate responsibly lies with the individual in respect to their chosen diet. Obesity is having a massive impact on the western world at large with all the causes well documented but little in terms of real, solid and lasting solutions.

As a research specialists, we have severe concerns regarding the current obesity trends and have developed methodologies the help combat the problem for individuals based on 'our' nutritional inheritance. We have been on this planet for more than two million years and for 99.5% of this time as hunter and gatherer, consuming a diet of predominantly consisting of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and with plenty of water as the main source of liquid refreshment.

Our nutritional inheritance was and is still is well defined, and perhaps has less tolerance to variation than originally thought. You cannot so drastically change the human diet as we have today and not expect a reaction from Mother Nature herself. It is, and it always will be the survival of the healthiest and the fittest. And the fittest are those who can adapt to their environment. We also have to face the facts of the three key revolutions we have encountered during the past century – the Agricultural, the Industrial and Technological revolution, which all have significantly contributed to our demise. We no longer work for our food and we are far from being scared about not having anything to eat. Today we work less and therefore need less, but as a people we are eating more than necessary .

If we want to solve this problem. we must go back to the basics and change our nutrition towards a diet that is aligned to the nutritional needs and expectation of our body derived over millions of years of evolution. We need to take action to be able to change to a nutrition and a lifestyle that our body was originally designed for. This can be the only natural solution for a good diet and healthy foods except you want to wait until we are able to engineer nutritional genes to control appetite, and who knows what else… or we accept a lifetime of consuming superfoods to achieve the same aim.

These natural concepts have been detailed in many publications about Superfoods, allowing everyone to review their attitude and thought process about their own diet and nutrition to that of their inheritance. Everybody is responsible by themselves for what they eat and how healthy they want to live. A Word About Evolution

What is Evolution and where does it get us?

Charles Darwin - 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882According to Charles Darwin, evolution is what supposedly brought us down from the trees and from the cave man to the computer geek. That's a long way, although only during the past 100 years we really made progress, with one extraordinary exception that is, and that was Greece. Right, the Greeks had warm and cold water in their private bathrooms 3000 years ago, while the rest of the world still peed on trees and bathed in the river. Anyway, that's another story. Evolution hasn't stopped in the last 11 million years and we can therefore relay on the fact that it won't stop tomorrow or the day after. The reason for that is that we are not done yet! A 100 000 years ago, the cave man thought that evolution probably had finished here, if he ever knew what evolution is, and he would have torn he's wife on her hair into the cave, thought her what he likes and what not, and that was evolution for him. But he actually had a good point of view, because he was looking at the monkeys in the trees. He was looking at how they behaved and he was laughing and thinking to himself how evolved he was, compared to those monkeys. Today we're looking at the same monkeys and we're thinking the same things, how is that for evolution?

The point is that during the past we evolved towards an unknown destination. Nobody can say or know what "the big plan" behind all that is, but we can relay on the fact that it isn't over yet. Even though many seem to believe that in December 2012 the end of the world will come, I'm already writing "Happy 2013" cards for my friends. We are not finished human beings and we have to evolve further, there is no way around that. I hear many voices talking about how old people will get who are today 20 years old. Most people I know estimate that today's young people will become about a 100 – 120 years old in average. I would top it with 150+ if the food they eat gets healthy and they take food supplements on daily bases.

If you think this is impossible, think back a bit, 300 years ago the average age of a human being was around 40 years, the people living then would never have believed that humans can get older than 100 years and yet; look at us today!

Master Hsu Yun died 120 years old in 1959In many remote regions of the world people become 100 years old and are still active members of the community. I know of a doctor who makes house visits in the countryside in China, the man is 103 years old! The regions where people get so old are interesting for scientists who study the anti aging process in these people. And that is more or less the way that superfoods got discovered. In some higher regions of China and in the Himalaya are many such villages where people get very old more or less without or with very little help of western medicine and pharmaceutics. In these region we find Goji Berries. You must have heard about those anti aging berries. Goji Berries are loaded with antioxidants, they contain 25 300 ORAC per 100 gram. (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) That's a lot. Antioxidants are fighting the free radicals in our bodies. The free radicals are what makes us age and makes us wrinkle. So the best known anti aging drugs today are antioxidants.

But with Goji Berries, better known to the western world as "Wolfberries"* having around 25 000 ORAC, there are even better foods out there carrying even more of those anti aging angels. look at the Acai berry for example. Acai contains 4 times more antioxidants than Goji, 102 700 ORAC (determined from both hydrophilic and lipophilic sources, was 102,700 units per 100 g)! Raw Cacao is also amongst the top runners with a stunning 81 000 ORAC.

Goji Berries Wolfberries Dutch processed cacao powder is not bad either and much tastier to consume; it still contains more than 40 000 units per 100g chocolate. During the past few years only, have all these superfoods been discovered. It took thousands of years and we had to invent and develop all kinds of technology and techniques including the internet for communication and a new measuring scale called ORAC, to be able to just begin to understand what superfoods are and what they are capable of doing to our body AND our minds. We just begin to understand what we are supposed to eat to become 100 years old and even older. But we slowly do understand and this is where evolution leads us! This is what it is all about; at least for now, for our generation. Keep on reading here and elsewhere about superfoods. Gather all the information you can get about these miracle fruits and berries and spices. Learn, Stay Healthy and Evolve!

* The name Wolfberry doesn't have anything to do with the nutritionist David Wolfe, the nutritionist; it's more like a funny coincidence.

Organic Foods and Longevity!

Organic Foods can Seriously Prolong Your Life!

Organic Broccoli is excellent everyday superfood

Well, it took a while, but I'm finally got the message! I remember the first time I really "got it" in regards of organic foods and their enormous benefits they would have to my health. I was standing in a supermarket which sold primarily organic food products called Whole Foods market.

I just came from a long run, craving for food and was just looking for something healthy to eat so I wouldn't ruin the effort right away. I walked through the produce section and was in awe at the amazing beauty of the fruits and vegetables as the misty filtered water sprayed them as if in slow motion. The purple, green, and red kale in particular were as alive as if they had not yet been picked. In fact green leafy vegetables are indeed breathing living organic substances.

Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are packed with chlorophyll that is nearly identical to human blood. This is why green leafy vegetables are perhaps the greatest single food on the face of the earth. Introducing organic foods into your diet just may be the answer you are looking for that no one will tell you about. No one meaning the people you currently seek out for advice on your health.

Unless you are going to a professional well trained nutritionist or wellness professional who has dedicated his or her life to the prevention of sickness and the healing of mankind, the chances of you getting an empathetic response in regards to your own health is diminished right from the start. Organic foods are certified to be free of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.

These vegetables and fruits are grown with love and respect versing greed and disrespect for human life on the other side. Organic foods in essence are as close to your natural make up as you can get. They are richer in nutrients and minerals. Vegetables are richer in chlorophyll and enzymes. Fruits are richer in antioxidants, amino acids and flavonoids. Both are rich on organic fiber which you need for the digestion of the food to avoid sicknesses like colon cancer, one of the most popular cancers in the western civilization.

Organic grains are not polluted with chemicals sprayed on them just so they don't fall down from having so many pesticides sprayed on them. Do you think by ingesting some of this clean pure food your chances of living longer are greater? I say yes, and back it up with my own experiences of feeling vibrant health ever since I've introduced organic foods into my diet. Not only have all my health related stats come into normal areas but I went from not being able to walk up a flight of stairs to training for an Ironman triathlon. Read the rest of this entry »

The Secrets Of Nutrition and Healthy Foods

About Nutrition and why you need to Eat Healthy Foods

Artichokes Pistachios Quinoa Yummie! Superfoods DinnerMore and more people understand that diseases and even depression can be prevented and healed with natural ways rather than chemicals. During the past century we developed a quick fix option for most of our common diseases. We've been spending billions on pharmaceutical medicines, for the purpose of suppressing the symptoms but not healing the root cause of the problems!

Lately many of us are also realizing that we have been fooled all along! And that there are many natural alternatives to prevent illness and disease rather than treat it. And we find that mother nature has given us the most wonderful medicine already; natural foods, packed with antioxidants and all kinds of nutrients, all designed to nourish our bodies, to keep us healthy and to give us strenght to work at an optimum level; and all that is necessary for evolution to work. Natural grown, whole grain and organic foods and their nutritional elements are also used as medicine.

You can discover the healing secrets of food all by yourself, take the responsibility of your own health into your own hands. Doctors give you medicine and cut things out to solve the problem, a naturopathic Nutritionists follow another principle. They treat patients as one whole element of body, mind and soul. If you look at it that way you get a much broader view of deficiencies that may be causing the illness. Treatments are specific to each individual, making sure you take a balanced combination of nutrients and minerals. Such treatments are always tailored specifically to your individual needs, to get your body back to full strength and make or keep you healthy.

Why are Whole Foods so Important.

Some whole foods that contain a high range of important nutrients are often called superfoods e.g wheatgrass, sprouts, spirulina, and more. All whole foods are a mixture of vital nutrients and other minerals, so while a food may be rich in one particular nutrients it may also contain other valuable nutrients and health-giving factors in lesser doses. Finding healthy foods that even taste good and give you the best nutrition are a big part of the fun of eating well, no matter if you live alone, or with your family.

What makes a Healthy Diet?

The answer can be given in one single sentence:

Nutrition determines how we look, how we feel, how we work, if we will be nervous, tired, pessimistic, joyful, comfortable and happily active, whether we will age prematurely or enjoy our lives to the full.

Try these steps to improve the nutritional content of your food:

Eat healthy organic food whenever possible. Try to find superfoods and food supplements in your neighborhood. Inform yourself; read articles about healthy foods. Super Foods may be a bit more expensive, but you can be sure that the food you are eating has not been processed and has been grown without the use of fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and other poisonous chemicals.

Here are some Food Processing Rules to Follow

  • Include as many superfoods in your diet as you can.
  • Eat lots whole grains.
  • Also eat the skin of vegetables and fruits.
  • Don't cut, juice, wash, or soak fruits and vegetables until you are ready to use them.
  • Drink lots of fresh fruit and vegetable juice.
  • Add plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to every meal you eat.
  • Eat raw food whenever possible. If you're cooking your food, use as little water as possible.

Unfortunately, some of the best superfoods might not be available in your neighborhood, but that isn't so bad anymore as it was only a few years ago, If I would have even known about Acai berries for example, ten years ago, I still wouldn't have had the means to go to Brazil to get some. Today it's far easier, you just visit our health shop and you order all the superfoods you ever wanted and they are at your doorstep 2 days later! That's what I call progress.  Or you go to the next online bookstore and order a book full of superfood recipes and you start cooking healthy foods with the everyday superfoods what you can get in your neighborhood.

Minerals are Essential to Building Maximum Health

Minerals are the foundational building blocks of all forms of matter and life

Did you know that most of America’s agricultural land was documented to be depleted of the majority of essential minerals and nutrients as early as the 1930’s? Senate document no. 264 of the 74th congress, second session, 1936, states:

“…Commercially grown food today has almost no nutritional value. The fruits, vegetables, and grains we eat today are starving us to death; no man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his body with the minerals he requires to stay healthy.”

Various mineralsDiscover the role that minerals and mineral-rich superfoods play in building high levels of physical health! Partially due to the rapid rise in health complaints in America traceable directly to mineral deficiencies, the role of minerals, trace minerals and M-state elements in maintaining health is now a widely studied science. But why are minerals so important to physical health?

The Building Blocks of DNA and RNA

The Periodic Table of 117 Elements form the basic building blocks of Nature. They are the physical foundations of both basic and complex forms of matter. Our DNA and RNA are built solely of just a few of these elements – phosphate, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen.

Varying combinations of just four of the five elements – carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen, are used to construct the amino acid chains that form our DNA and RNA. Phosphate, in combination with a sugar made up of these same four elements, form the structural spiral that holds the various chains of amino acids together. Amino acids form the basis of proteins which in turn build a cell.

An interesting side note is, that a single cell (which is less than a millimeter long) contains two meters of DNA! http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/dna/dna.htm

Proteins, chromosomes, genes, cells, tissues, organs, glands and bone are further developments of the DNA. They are built by forming more complex structures using additional elements of the Periodic Chart.

What does this mean? Our body is a highly developed combination of the Period Table of Elements. If our body were to be in short supply of one or more of these elements, particularly the 5 basic building blocks of the DNA, isn’t it likely that a few basic body functions could begin to deteriorate?

Minerals

There are 117 known elements related to the Periodic Table, of which 94 are commonly found on earth. Minerals are typically either pure forms, or combinations of, the 94 common elements. There are over 4,000 minerals known to exist, with more being discovered all the time.

Minerals are recognized as essential to the construction and performance of thousands of chemical, hormonal and enzymatic processes in the body. Silica, the most essential macro mineral, for example, is required for all connective tissue development. Silica is also required to make other minerals more bio-available.

Without a sufficient supply of minerals, the body is limited in its ability to manufacture these essential body builders and regulators. To not supply the body with an adequate stock of bio-available minerals is like asking a mason to build a brick wall without providing the bricks. Bring the bricks on site and the building of the wall can begin. Stock the body with an adequate supply of minerals, then thousands of biological processes can move forward with ease and efficiency. The body will simply clean house and heal itself.

The Next Superfoods to Eat

Brazil Despolpando Acai Berry PulpNew superfoods are always popping up and getting plenty of media attention. As of late, the Pomegranate was in focus, then came along Goji berries and now acclaimed Acai berry. What is a superfood? By definition, a superfood is a term to describe any food that has “remarkable” health properties. Make way for the new wave of superfoods which will soon be found in our beverages, yogurts, ice creams, etc. Here are the newest superfoods making an appearance in a grocery store near you!

Muscadine grapes

While they look like typical purple grapes, Muscadine grapes are a little larger and thicker and pack more nutrition than your standard grape. One particular benefit comes from the powerful antioxidant, Resveratrol (also found in red wine). Resveratrol has been linked to lowering blood-sugar levels, contains strong anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties (lowering cholesterol and preventing heart disease). Currently, these berries are hard to come by so I take the Resveratrol supplement on a daily basis.

Maqui Berry

I am a huge Food Network fan and I had heard Rachel Ray briefly mention this berry on her cooking show. This sparked me to look into this berry further. Maqui berry is the highest ranked food on the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity scale (ORAC). This test measures the antioxidant potency of foods. Just to put things into perspective: Blueberry juice has an ORAC score of 3,000 and Macqui juice has an ORAC score of 40,000! Due to the high antioxidants in this berry, it is believed to rid the body in toxins and possibly help with weight control. Macqui berry has been used in traditional medicine to help symptoms of sore throat, diarrhea and treat ulcers.

Acerola

Acerola is also known as Amazon or Barbados cherries. I’ve seen Acerola really making headway in grocery stores already. This fruit contains 40 times more vitamin C than an orange and in a test comparing it’s antioxidants to 11 other fruits, the acerola came out on top. In July 2008, Absolut Vodka came out with a limited-edition vodka containing acerola mixed with blueberries, acai and pomegranate. You’ll likely encounter this berry in desserts and preserves.

Baobob Fruit

Grown in Australia, Africa or Madagascar, this superfood seems to have it all: Iron, Vitamin C, Calcium, (2x the amount found in milk), protein in it’s seeds, phosphorus for bones, fiber and a slew of electrolytes. This fruit was just recently approved for export and has recently been used in drinks, yogurt, as well as a thickener for soups.

Kevin Gianni Interviews Happy Oasis about her Favorite Superfoods

Happy Oasis, founder the Raw Spirit Festival Inc, shares her favorite superfoods

Kevin: Sara says you really inspired her on the Rawkathon. She wants to know, you talked about foraging food but what do you eat? Do you fix it yourself? Is it simple? Is it gourmet? What’s daily fare?

Happy: Well, first of all, thank you Sara. You inspire me. I love this mirroring of inspiration because it always encourages me to go on. I have the option to just go back and be a hermit. I’m so content like that. So thank you, Sara.

What do I eat? Well, I try to be versatile. However I’m more or less pretty much raw vegan. I’ll say 99 percent raw vegan. Once in a while I will eat something else but it’s so rare that I can’t even remember the last time I had something else. This morning I had juice. I’m home so I had some carrot, apple, celery. Then I went into the garden. We grow a garden here four seasons. I’m up in the mountains but I put a piece of plastic over our garden. I raise it up a little bit in the winter. We also have a sun room. That sun room is part living area and part indoor raised bed gardens. So we have lounge chairs, a French dining table and we also have these vegetables growing. I love to grow greens. In Arizona by the time the greens get here they can be a week old. So I ate some parsley and cilantro. Almost everything I eat in the green category is from the garden here. Our garden is just lush right now. I love arugula. It’s one of my favorites. I love the mustard family. Chard sometimes, and lots of spinach in the winter. I’m not so into lettuce because I like the dark, leafy greens for their nutritional value even more. Then after the juice – oh, a little bit of ginger and lemon in it. Sometimes I’ll throw a couple tablespoons of spirulina in there. I’m pretty simple.

I’m really into fresh fruits. I usually only eat locally, as much as possible, and fresh, organic. I go to the farmer’s markets. I went to the farmer’s market in California three days ago and ate [indecipherable] and some blood oranges that had just come off of somebody’s tree.

Then there are these potluck celebrations which have more complex foods. However this digestive tract is other than able to digest gourmet foods with a lot of ease because of so many years of eating wild, edible plants and mono foods. If you know what I mean. Just like eating one cucumber. One of my favorite meals or snacks is just to eat a cucumber. Sometimes for my teeth I’ll just eat celery or a big carrot. I love beets as well.

Then in the tropics, I just came from a couple of months in Hawaii, I was having coconut every day, fresh coconut right off the tree. It would plunk down in the middle of the night. You can hear the avocados falling down on the ground, as well, at night. I go easy on bananas. I really try to avoid those. But coconut every day. Papaya. In the tropics it’s really easy to eat too much fruit so I try to start my day with salad. I used to be diabetic. And then try to end my day with a salad. Then I have fruit in between as my snacks. That’s it. Pretty simple.

I almost never eat dried fruit. I don’t do any raisins, Gobi berries, dates, or any of that because of the diabetes and also I find it very dehydrating and more difficult to digest. I also go easy on the nuts. I try to eat a lot more olives and avocados for my main source of fat. And flax seed oil and olive oil.

I’m pre-superfoods. I’ve been raw vegan for 14 years. The word “superfood” I’d never heard of. They kind of came in as this big fad. This has been going on for a few years. In the long run the superfoods are great and it’s really about fresh, organic produce and sprouting your own mung beans and other sprouts and your own garden and foraging. That’s really the sustainable, long-term diet of the millennia.

Kevin: Right. It makes a lot of sense. Gail does ask, “What is your favorite superfood?” So I imagine that even though you’re pre-superfood I’m sure that you’ve eaten a few of them. What would be your favorite one?

Happy: I would say my favorite superfood is loving kindness. It just feeds me. When people are really loving and kind and funny. When people are really hilarious, it just giggles me forth and it gives me so much energy. I love affection. I love to hug people and be hugged. And just living in nature is the finest superfood. But on that level that I know what you’re talking about, I would say spirulina. I do use, because I travel a lot, Jameth Sheridan’s Healthforce Nutritionals. He has this VitaMineral Green which seems to be a really nice blend. Sometimes I just put a couple tablespoons in water. I’m not gourmet, please understand. That will just do it for me. I eat to live. I don’t live to eat. People are sometimes shocked that I’m not a gourmet chef. I leave that to other people. I love the gourmet food on very occasional occasions.

Superfoods, I eat dulse. Dulse is wonderful. Sometimes nori sheets. But I don’t really take anything out of a bottle personally. However, if those people are in transition or they feel that they’re even busier than I am and they prefer eating out of a bottle then more power to them. However for me and for my budget, because I have a non-profit salary, so for my budget and for my vitality I just love fresh greens and fresh fruits.
