Goji Berries – High Antioxidant Superfood

About Goji Berries

Goji Berries SuperfoodsGoji berries are in the western world better known as Wolf berries. Goji berries are considered to be one of the most nutrient rich berries on the planet. The Goji berry is a tiny red fruit about the same size as a blueberry. It tastes sour and sweet, with a slight tartness, and is like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. The fruit is nicknamed the "happy berry" because of the sense of well being it is said to induce.

Goji berries are grown predominantly in the Himalayan hills of northwest China and Tibet. They grow on vines and are dried and preserved in the sun. They have been eaten by Tibetan monks and used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

Nutrition of Goji Berries

Goji berries are nutritionally rich. They are packed full of: Antioxidants: they are the richest known source of beta-carotene of all foods (weight for weight they contain 500 times more beta-carotene than oranges!), vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamins B1, B2 and B6, 21 trace minerals, including zinc, calcium and selenium, 18 amino acids, omegas (essential fatty acids) and polysaccharides which fortify and support a healthy immune system.

Anti-oxidants work by "mopping up" unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are caused by pollutants such as cigarette smoke and chemicals in our food. They are highly active, unstable molecules and can damage the body's proteins, fats and DNA. There are many negative effects of free radicals including contributing towards heart disease and cancer as well as speeding up the aging process. Eating a healthy balanced diet and including nutrient rich superfoods like goji berries, reduces the damage done by free radicals.

Health Benefits of Goji Berries

Goji Berries have many health benefits. They are thought to: enhance libido / sex drive and boost energy and general well being, improve cellulite – , assist in weight loss and burn fat, slow ageing, fight cancer, fight heart disease, boost the immune system, improve hearing and eyesight, maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, enhance fertility and reduce morning sickness, build muscle, strengthen bones and tendons, strengthen and support healthy liver and kidney function and maintain a healthy nervous system.

The recommended daily serving of goji berries is between 10-30g. Dried Goji berries are very versatile and can be added to salads, smoothies, muesli, breakfast cereals, yogurt, cakes, or enjoyed as they are as a nutritious and healthy snack.

Five Foods for Health and Weight Loss

Healthy Weight Loss

Time to loose some weight? Most people today have never heard about eating well and eating healthy foods. Nobody has taught what is really healthy for us and sometimes it takes a while to rid ourselves off the convenience of packaged, precooked and otherwise processed food. Only during the past 6 years we are hearing about how important good nutrition is and about superfoods that can prolong our live and much more. However, the benefits, of making a change towards eating healthy foods are numerous. We should take the time to find out what foods taste good to us and start including them in our daily foods. Trust your body, it knows what it needs. Implementing and eating healthy foods in your daily diet promises more success than the common crash dieting and sudden extreme food changes that many weight loss programs suggest.

With this in mind, we can start substituting food that we love but that isn’t so good for our health and body weight, with far healthier alternatives. This is a great way to start this process.

Here are five examples of changes you can make in your diet that can improve both, your health and your waistline:

Yogurt: A great superfood is plain yogurt because it has a balanced amounts of carbs, fat, and protein. Yogurt can satiate you while keeping your blood sugar levels stable for many hours.

In a study from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, subjects on a low-calorie diet that included yogurt lost 61 percent more fat overall and 81 percent more belly fat than people on a similar plan but without yogurt.

Nevertheless, it is important to stick with plain, organic yogurt because sweetened yogurt can have more sugar than ice cream.

  • Yogurt makes a great substitute for sour cream and mayonnaise in dips and as a topping for potatoes, soups, and mexican food.
  • I like to eat plain yogurt, add some berries, an apple and a spoon of honey and mix it all up. That’s a great substitute for ice cream.

Almond Butter: If you’re in love with peanut butter, try Almond butter. Almond butter tastes as rich but it is much better for you. Studies have shown that eating bread with almond butter lowers the glycemic index of the bread, even white bread, so that it keeps blood sugar levels low. Almonds are also a great source of protein, amino acids, and vitamins. They are great for digestion and help keep the body from becoming too acidic.

  • Put it on bread and crackers instead of peanut butter.
  • Add some almond butter to your oatmeal for protein.
  • Make a sauce or dipp for stir fried veggies and serve with brown rice.

Quinoa: This superfood comes from Peru and is high in fiber and protein as well as an almost complete source of amino acids. It keeps you full longer than pasta or rice, is versatile, and it’s greatto keep a pot will stay fresh all week.

  • Use Quinoa as substitute for rice with stir fried, fish, or meat.
  • Quinoa can be added to many salads.
  • In Peru it’s often eaten as a morning cereal with a bit of milk and honey or chopped fruit and nuts.

Sardines: With levels of mercury rocketing sky high in tuna and many wild fish and pollution concerns with farmed fish, sardines are a natural and super healthy answer. Packed full of omega 3 fatty acids and extremely high in calcium, sardines are also low on the food and mercury chain. Many people shy away from sardines because they taste ‘fishy’ but this can be solved by soaking them in milk for an hour or so. Substitutions:

  • Use sardines instead of anchovies in dressings, in ceasar salads, and on pizza.
  • Use chopped sardines in place of tuna in cold and hot sandwiches.

Berries: Most especially, acai berries blueberries and goji berries are the best fruits to be eating right now. Blueberries are high in antioxidants and fiber, while goji berries contain 18 of the 20 amino acids needed by the human body, making them a great source of protein and more beta carotene than carrots.

  • Instead of bananas in your cereal or oatmeal, try blueberries. Unlike bananas which can spike blood sugar, blueberries help keep insulin levels stable while providing a wide range of nutrients.
  • You can add dried acai or goji berries to a mixture of nuts to boost your stamina trail mix or add them to green tea for tartness, they are nice to eat after you have finished the tea.

The Story Of Li Ching Yuen

Li Ching Yuen - Anti Aging with Goji BerriesHere’s a little story about Goji Berries. Li, Ching-Yuen or Li,Ching-Yun was a Chinese herbalist, martial artist and tactical advisor. It is claimed that he was born in 1734 while disputed records say he was born on 1677. His lifespan of 199 or 256 years, in any case, far exceed the longest confirmed lifespan of 122 years and 164 days.

The story goes that Li Ching-Yuen was supposedly born in 1677 in Qi Jiang Xian, Szechun province. He spent most of his life in the mountain ranges gathering herbs and knowledge of longevity methods. In 1749 when he was already 71 years old, he moved to Kai Xian to join the Chinese Army to be a teacher of the martial arts and a tactical advisor.

Professor Wu Chung Chieh, from the Chengdu University, found records from the Chinese Imperial Government congratulating Li Ching Yuen on his 150th birthday in 1827.

In 1927, 100 years later, he was invited by General Yang Sen in Wang Xien, Szechuan. There the general was fascinated at his youthfulness, strength and prowess despite his advancing age. His famous portrait was taken there.

In May 1933, he died of natural causes. General Yang Sen after Li’s death investigated the truth about his age. and later wrote the report and got published. Witnesses interviewed from his home province remembered already seeing Li when they were children and others reported that Li had already been friends with their grandfathers.

Sad to say this story will continue to be a longevity myth and not treated as a fact. His actual lifespan will never be firmly established due to the fact that the census documentation of rural 17th century China is so sparse with comparisons to modern records. Though his story has well been documented in a featured documentary by National Geographic magazine in 1930. Oh well, but at least one secret to Li’s longevity is already produced right now. Yes, the raw organic superfood Tibetan Goji Berries.

It is believed that Li consumed Goji Berries everyday. Some even say that this was his main source of food. Tibetan Goji Berries as a raw organic superfood is being honored to these day because of its longevity properties in a two week festival.

Wolfberries Goji Berries in ChinaDespite its longevity benefits, Tibetan Goji Berries also strengthens the immune system, increase energy and reduce fatigue, reduce the effect of free radical in the body, engender a sense of well-being and optimism and help curb appetite and over-eating.

As a raw organic superfood its nutritional profile is packed. Its loaded with nutrients and powerful antioxidants. 18 amino acids, more beta carotene than carrots, more iron than spinach, 21 trace minerals, 500 times more Vitamin C than oranges, 13% protein more than whole wheat, and loaded more with other vitamins such as Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and Vitamin E.

The secret is out. Tibetan Goji Berries for longevity. Eat it daily and live longer, but don’t forget that there are far more superfoods out there and that Goji Berries, as we know today are only the second best berries for anti aging, Acai berries contain even 4 times more antioxidants then Goji. If Li would haveknown what we know today about nutrition and superfoods, he could probably still be around to tell the story himself…

Introducing Superfoods to You and Your Family

What are Superfoods?

Raw Food Healthy Food - CarrotsIt is commonly known that our bodies require food for essential nutrients and energy, but some foods are better than others, and some are even better than that. These foods at the top of the list are known as superfoods, which are rich in vitamins and have been proven to improve your health and reduce your risk for many diseases.

What are the benefits of superfoods?

Superfoods are especially good for you because they’re rich in vitamins, minerals, and extra compounds that are good for your health and easy to process. Things such as omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and many things that are hard to pronounce. Superfoods have been involved in scientific studies to back up the health claims made for them.

How do I get these foods into my diet?

To begin using superfoods in your diet, start slowly. Change your snack of potato chips or candy to a cup of low fat flavored yogurt, and trade out lunch for a baked chicken sandwich with light mayo, a side salad, and some string cheese. Once you feel comfortable with this change, you can incorporate more super foods.

Getting your family and friends involved will provide a support system and make things even easier. It is a very simple change to make, and the benefits you’ll reap are priceless, but it does require that you do it and keep up with it. Don’t change your habits just long enough to loose a few pounds. I promise you’ll be much happier if you stick with it.

What about getting my kids to eat healthy?

The easiest way to get a child to eat healthy is to start young. Every parent has to go through the process of finding out what their kids love, what they will tolerate, and what will end up on the wall. This happens whether you choose to feed your child healthy or unhealthy food. The problem arises when you decide to make a change for the better and your child, who is used to (and loves) their current unhealthy eating habits, resists with full force.

But changing the eating habits of your whole family doesn’t have to end in tears with every meal. Just like anyone, kids need to be introduced to healthy eating slowly. This can be a positive change that you go through together, rather than against each other. There are just a few basic rules.

Pick your Battles

If your child loves carrots but feeds broccoli to the dog when you’re not looking, don’t fuss. Don’t cause a fight that will push them further and further into rebellion. Don’t give them broccoli for dinner. Instead mix a small amount in a homemade salad dressing, or a smoothie. Someday, their tastes may change and they decide to they love broccoli. It happens all the time.

Include your child in the preparation.

Many children love to assist in the kitchen. They feel important and it creates a great bonding opportunity. So let them help by washing or tearing vegetables, help them set the table, or even ask them to help you choose the food to make (within boundaries.) If your child is to the point they hate helping, ask them very nicely to do small things for you and give them lots of praise on what a great job they did without patronizing them. It helps build their willingness to do it again.

Make it fun

One way to encourage kids both to help in the kitchen AND to eat the food, is to make the preparation fun. Make the food into fun shapes or play kids music while you prepare. You could make the preparation into a game, make sound effects and be as silly as you want. You’ll be surprised to discover that you want to be in the kitchen more and more, too.

As with all diet changes, getting your child to eat healthy will take a little bit of work, some understanding, a healthy dose of creativity, and a whole lot of patience. It will also take compromises here and there. The end result is well worth the battle, though. So keep it up and one day your child will thank you.

Try adding oats to your fruit at breakfast because it slows down the blood sugar level spike. Dietary fibre has shown to lower the incidence of cancer, possibly because it contains lignan. The insoluble fibre is crucial for promoting bowel action and thereby relieving constipation problems. These positive effects may be due to its high anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin content. Add them to your oats for breakfast or put them in a smoothie.

  • Cruciferous Vegetables

These include broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and cauliflower. If you can eat three or more servings of these vegetables per week studies indicate that you could reduce prostate cancer risk almost by half, and in women the risk of breast cancer is significantly reduced. Other cancers may be prevented too. Cruciferous vegetables also contain compounds that help the liver to detox.

There are other superfoods such as cold-water fish with its high omega-3 fatty acid content; most healthy seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds; flax seeds with their particular combination of fatty acids. Plainly put, superfoods are by far the best health foods to eat.

Ten Great Superfoods

Seaweed Harvest Indonesia

Picture: Jean-Marie Hullot

Welcome to my second article on the top 20 superfoods. Last week, in my first article, I outlined my personal world top ten superfoods. This week I’m going to finish this superfoods list by looking at numbers 11 to 20. Once again I should mention that these are 10 great foods for all round diet and health. Eat all twenty consistently and you could add several more years in perfect health to your lifespan. And these superfoods are not even expensive!

To begin with; most fruits are healthy and good for you but one of the best weighs in at number 11.

11. The Blueberry: with 6552 ORAC per 100g, this little fruit is packed full of antioxidants which protect the eyes and cardio-vascular system. They also have anti cancer properties. The antioxidants are also found in abundance in blackberries and bilberries. Eat them or drink them all in smoothies, put them into your fruit salad or just eat them on their own. Lots of it!

12. Goji Berries: at number 12 in my list is the Goji berry. There isn’t anything that this great berry doesn’t do! Goji berries are a fantastic superfood. Wait for it- it contains anti-aging and anti-tumor properties, its packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, selenium, zinc and calcium. Goji berries are also high in omegas which are needed for the efficient working of the nervous systems and the brain. Not only are Gojis very healthy, they also taste great! Use them with your cereal, yogurt, in a smoothie, in muesli or dry frozen, just on their own.

13. Sauerkraut: At number 13 its raw sauerkraut. This superfood even increases your libido. Sauerkraut is rich in vitamin C and has been used in the past to treat constipation.

14. Oregano:Belongs in almost any food! Oregano is extremely rich in antioxidants, with more than 200’000 ORAC, so rich that it at the very top of the list of almost any food. This herb is great for improving digestion and the immune function. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Add it to stews and soups but make sure its after cooking or you’ll lose all its goodness.

15. Raspberries: On the 15th place is one of the world’s most eaten superfoods, the humble Raspberry. These are high in fiber and folic acid as well as containing ellagic acid which has been proven to have anti-cancer properties.

16. Carrots: At 16 it’s the humble carrot, loved by humans and by rabbits! These contain antioxidants such as zeaxanthin and lutein which protect against cancer but are also great for protecting the lungs, the eyes and skin.

17. Turmeric: weighs in at number 17. Stacked full of Curcumin which contains also extremely high amounts of antioxidants, 159’000 ORAC units/100g, has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, is incredibly good for the skin and for the sexual stamina.

18. Sea Weed: Seaweed is alkalizing and detoxifying and so powerful that you only need to eat small quantities. You can get it dried and mix it in salads. Seaweed contains lots of protein, calcium, iron, iodine and magnesium. In fact in much higher quantities than any land plants.

19. Slippery Elm Tree Tea: can help assist recovery from stress related disorders, from surgery, inflammation and gastro-intestinal disorders. The Native Americans and the pioneers of the wild west used the inner bark of the Slippery Elm Tree for food to survive and for a medicine to heal. To gain real benefits you need to drink 2-3 cups a day. DO NOT use Slippery Elm Tree products until talking to your doctor.

20. Water: Water has it’s place in this superfoods list because we need water for an efficient brain function! It is most essential for more than that; we need water for our circulation, digestion, stamina, a healthy skin and in fact every bodily function that you can think of. So drink plenty of it!!

Those are my personal top twenty superfoods. Most of these healthy foods are cheap and most of them are also easily available anywhere near to where you live, so be sensible and grab a superfood instead of a burger!

The Truth About Superfoods!

What exactly are Superfoods?

Goji Berry Lycium barbarum IllustrationSuperfoods, the foods that are considered to be …well… super! I can picture it now. A man wearing a shirt with a big G on the front standing for Goji Berry! Suddenly every simple apple seems to have gotten superfood standard. But superfoods have always caught my attention. Mostly though because people like to hear about quick fixes, so a lot of people are writing about it and they get a lot of publicity and attention. Actually I should rephrase that statement. Americans are all about quick fixes. In America the supplement industry has taken off and in the rest of the western world, in particular in Europe it looks not much different. We have supplements for just about everything you can imagine. So it is just natural for people to be promoting superfoods. Superfoods just feed the hunger for a quick fix or a one size fits all cure for everyone. The question then becomes, if superfoods really work, or if they are just another scam like most of the food supplements released. Lets take a look at some facts.

Defining Superfoods

One of the problems when it comes to superfoods is actually defining a superfood. Since the term has come out people always use the term now for any food to just get attention. Type in superfoods in Google and you will come up with sites that have regular everyday fruits and vegetables listed as superfoods. I am talking about foods like apples, oranges, and broccoli. Nothing exotic, but people consider them super. This is not what I think of when it comes to superfoods. I think more along the line of medical mushrooms, certain herbs, goji berries, raw cacao, maca, etc… Foods that are more mysterious to us here in America, but are still possible to get a hold of. I feel that the term superfood is now being used to just get more people to eat fruit and vegetables for they do not freak out when they hear recommendations to be eating goji berries when they do not even eat apples. Whatever the reason just note when I refer to superfoods I am referring to more exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, and even seaweed.

Superfood Nutrition

The biggest question about superfoods is are they really super, and do we need to consume them? I find it funny that some people actually bash superfoods saying their is no difference, or the just eat regular fruit and vegetables defense. It is interesting we rank everything in America, but we do not rank are food in terms of nutrition. The Yankees are a good baseball team because they got a lot of good players(and money), but all fruit is considered equal even if some fruits have more nutrition then others. Superfoods in my opinion is just the ranking of certain foods in terms of vitamins and minerals, and then eating the foods that are the best. You can only eat so many foods in your life so why not eat the top foods? That is what a superfood nutrition motto would be.

Another interesting topic to discuss is are superfoods actually whole foods? We want to get our nutrition from whole foods as much as possible because their are many different chemicals in plants that we have not discovered or researched yet. So many people only pay attention to the big known vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin C. Those are important, but they are not the thing to worry about. Eating fruits and vegetables will get you plenty of all the main vitamins and minerals, but I want to try to get a wide variety of the other undiscovered stuff in plants. Most superfoods have been found to have lots and lots of different chemicals in them that are completely unknown.

Are Superfoods Needed For Optimal Health?

No. Just plain and simple. You can get to an amazing level of health and never eat a single cacao bean. Can they help you get to those levels faster? You bet. Are they an easy way to get a lot of nutrients. You bet. Most are minimally processed and contain tons of nutrients. I recommend that you find the superfood that works for you, and you like the taste. Keep reading on this website and you’ll find lots and lots of good information about superfoods and what they are good for and how to use them.
