What’s With Superfoods?

The Best Superfoods for Weight Loss

Barley Field - Superfoods in Nature

There is a lot of buzz about acai, the benefits of the little power packed berry and what it can do. You may have been wondering if this is all true, or if it is a great deal of hype. There is actually some truth to the excitement about acai berry- but maybe not for the reasons that most people think. Also, there are other foods, other "super foods" that you should know about so that you can bring them into your overall weight loss and nutrition plan that can help you succeed. Understanding exactly what the benefits are of these foods and why, as well as what they can actually do for you is important though. To make an informed choice you need to know the facts, and actually, in spite of some of the bad practices, there is some truth to the hype about the acai berry in regards to healthy weight loss.

Acai berry itself is a very healthy food- that much is very true. While no single food can change your physique or enhance your life, a complete and balanced diet rich in antioxidants can really boost any health and fitness program, especially weight loss geared ones. So, given the fact that acai does in fact have ten times more antioxidants than red grapes, it seems reasonable to assert that it is a good food to include in your diet. However, it is not the only such food. There are a number of foods that are classified as "super foods" and the common thread in most of these is that antioxidants, fiber or essential fatty acids. It is always best to discuss major diet changes with your doctor before you try them, however, just including a few of these foods in your daily diet is not something that is going to impact you in a negative way. On the contrary, you may find a new snack food or side dish favorite that really is as good for you as it tastes.

The next superfood we will have a look at is Barley. Rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, barley not only helps by enabling the digestive tract to be more healthy, but can in some cases reduce the risk of certain cancers. Soluble fiber is great for those on active weight loss regimens, because it does help the body to metabolize fats and carbohydrates more efficiently.

Nuts and seeds are also a commonly overlooked food- many people avoid them in weight loss plans due to the fat content, but, the benefits of the nutrients far outweigh that risk. When used in moderation, nuts and seeds are a wonderful addition to almost any dish that can power pack proteins and other heart healthy nutrients- as well as fighting the signs of aging.

On the whole, the "superfoods" are great additions to an existing well balanced diet. Most physicians do not recommend that you go on fasts or anything rash like that, so, the "Peanut diet" or exclusion diets such as that are not likely key. But add some of these superfoods to your diet and you'll see some results in your overall health.

Acai Berry Superfoods – Are Acai Berries Really That Healthy?

The Health Benefits of Acai Berries

Acai Berries on the Palm Tree"Acai Berries are superfoods!" We're hearing it everywhere now. But is it true? Are Acai Berries really that healthy? In time when every food seems to be artificial and medical companies stuff us with the newest cures for everything, some people try to find help using natural products to cure the various health problems.

Over time we forgot how powerful nature can be, after all we only duplicate its achievements in medicine. That is why a category of super foods has been invented, foods so packed with healthy nutrients that they can be called natural medicine or superfoods.

Probably the most wide spread family of superfoods are vegetables from 'Allium' family – vegetables like garlic, onions or leeks. This not very glamorous group of vegetables, contains flavonoids, which stimulate production of antioxidants in the liver, thus detoxifying your body.

Up until today  blueberries where one of the most famous superfoods. They have a high number of antioxidants (ORAC value), anthocyanins and phytochemicals, preventing aging, cancer and numerous brain diseases. Blueberries are the food of choice for many healthy people in Europe and the USA.

Recently, the spotlight has been taken off the Blueberries by a new berry, the Acai Berry.

Is the Acai Berry the #1 Superfood?

When acai berries where first introduced to the public eye, there were numerous talks about how healthy it is. However, publicity seemed to focus all of it's attention on the very high antioxidants level, leaving in the background wealth of other healthy details about this berry.

The first thing I want to mention about the Acai Berry, is the very high level of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are located mainly in peels of vegetables/fruits. They offer a very powerful protection against harmful free radicals, which develop as a result of exposure to radiation, the UV light, smoking, smog and various other metabolic processes.

Not only that, they also preserve delicate antioxidants within the fruit. While, you may have heard that red whine has a large number of anthocyanins, Acai has 10 to 30 times more, depending on the quality and ripeness of the berries. Acai berry is also very high on dietary fiber. 100 grams of Acai berries contain 45 grams of fiber.Acai Berries are rich in healthy unsaturated fats from omega family, which have been proven to help you with anything from your brain to preventing cancer. In Acai you will find mainly the most important omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids.

Additionally, acai berries contain a lot of protein and amino acids. Acai has 19 different amino acids, which are crucial for growth, maintenance and repair of your body tissues. Our bodies can produce only 11 of these amino acids, so you have to supply the rest with your diet.

Acai also offers three different plant sterols: sigmasterol, campesterol and B-sitosterol. These three sterols are invaluable to health of your heart. This concludes the benefits of Acai Berries. Even if you don't believe in the weight loss hype of acai berries (acai berries are beneficial for weight loss due to stopping the carving for food), these berries are still the best choice of superfoods! With more than 100,000  (102,700 μ mol TE/100 gram),it is the world's antioxidant richest fruit known today!

Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits – Why Apple Cider is a Superfood

Apple Cidre – The French Superfood

Apple Cider - Healthy SuperfoodsWhat are some apple cider vinegar benefits? First of all, apple cider vinegar can be seen as a remedy and supplement, not simply a food or something you might use for salad dressing (though that's a perfectly good and healthy use for it!).

This is a natural food that comes from the fermentation of apple juice. It's actually the result of fermentation beyond what you'd do to create hard apple cider. So, the benefits of apple cider vinegar can be partly attributed to apples, and partly to the unique product created be the fermentation process.

In modern times, the medicinal uses for apple cider vinegar were probably best publicized by D.C. Jarvis a Vermont doctor who became familiar with the use of this product as a folk remedy. Used on animals as well as humans, Jarvis found that it could cure or prevent many common ailments, from colds and viruses to arthritis and digestive problems. More recently it has become a component of some natural diets, aiding in the weight loss process.

Apple cider vinegar can be seen as a "superfood," something that is good for the body as a whole. Skeptic will sometimes see this as reason for suspicion -how can one food or medicine be good for everything? But if we look at the body holistically, this is not so mysterious. If something has a beneficial effect on the immune system, for example, this will make it an excellent preventative for any number of ailments.

Some of the more common claims made for this superfood include:

  • Cider is Beneficial for digestion
  • Cider is good for increasing metabolism and weight loss
  • Cider prevents or reduces severity of allergies
  • Cider prevents or reduces frequency or severity of colds and other respiratory ailments
  • Cider is beneficial for kidney stones and bladder problems
  • Cider is helps reduce symptoms of arthritis and other muscle and joint ailments.
  • Cider is helps alkalize the body (even though vinegar tastes acidic, it has an alkalizing effect after digestion)

At the same time, we should not think of apple cider vinegar -or anything else- as a cure-all. No food or supplement can make up for eating a poor diet or lack of exercise over a long period of time. However, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, this product can help you feel better, lose weight, and possibly be less susceptible to many common health problems.

How should you take apple cider vinegar? There are several options. You can use it as a food, making salad dressings for example. You can take it straight out of the bottle, several tablespoons per day for example. If you find it too hard to take straight, it can be diluted with water. Some people simply dislike the taste of vinegar and would prefer not to taste it at all. If you fall into this category but would still like to enjoy its benefits, you can find supplements in capsule form that you can swallow.

Fortunately, this is not a terribly rare or expensive item, so you can try it and start to experience apple cider vinegar benefits for yourself.

Loose Weight with a Low Glycemic Diet

Weight Loss Strategies

It’s logic that no one in their right mind would make a conscious decision for being extra heavy, would you?. There are no real benefits for being fat. Being heavy carries so many impractical implications with it that it just can’t be all that much fun.

Chubbiness also restricts general movement of the body. Being flabby makes you feel lethargic, even lazy, but it can certainly encourage you to eat even more of the wrong foods that have got you there in the first place. Comparatively, many obese people do not believe they look as good as they could do and some even develop a dislike or maybe a hate for their own body. Tubbiness certainly doesn’t make you feel as good as you could feel, and some say it even dampens your sex life. But more importantly it increases your risk of ill health – and of that there’s no doubt. It is even believed to reduce your life span. There is an abundance of medical evidence to prove this is so, and the effects of obesity will now be so bad that some believe that a great many of our children of today can be the first generation never to outlive their parents. The truth is hard but simple – being flabby and obese encumbers our lives in so many ways…So why can we allow this to happen, why can we do that to ourselves?

So we now sit in the course of an corpulence epidemic and in reality, no one really wants to be or has chosen to get heavy or obese. And that is despite over 200 million websites of eating habits plans, diet regime pills and diet regime potions. And then there’s the authority suggestion, the medical advice, the recommendation of nutritionists and untold food intake companies – all unusually wanting to take your custom. So what isn’t working? We only have to take in the moment and pause…look around us to see that something is obviously very very wrong. And do the government want it for being so? I don’t believe so, as heaviness costs our nation billions of dollars a year. It is perhaps more the case that they are not really sure of how to tackle this self inflicted epidemic, which is second only to smoking in the stakes of measurable loss of life.

So why? Why do we intentionally inflict this self induced ‘illness’ upon ourselves? Incredibly, despite the fact we know which foods we must always eat, we know which foods are good for us and we know which are the ‘badies’. But despite all this, we still eat too much and too much of the wrong stuff. We still self inflict the misery of obesity upon ourselves.

If a close friend appeared for being alarmed and severe in telling you that the food you were almost to eat, contained the deadly poison arsenic in it, your natural reaction that i see to stop ‘dead in your tracks’ or at the least hesitate to confirm. Are they kidding? Do they mean it? And that could be our dilemma in a nut shell. We don’t experience an immediate or real threat to our lives when we are eating what is deemed to get food that is certainly ‘bad’ for us. Some processed foods, most fast foods and all junk foods. we are accustomed to eating it and our ‘egos’ accepts it and therefore there is no threat to our instinctive survival mechanisms. Our primeval instinct to survive does not ‘see’ eating as a threat to life itself. we are natural eating ‘machines’. And so if our ‘egos’ accepts it – we do.

Is there an option to do nothing as an individual? Can we allow to wait for the miracle ‘diet regime drug’ to stem our appetite? Only you can decide. But would you want to be on ‘diet drugs’ for the rest of your life – day in day out drug dependent just for the sake of…eating? Experts say most would not and it almost sounds ludicrous to even consider the option. There is another method…and that could be to go back to basics.

We have existed on this planet for well over 2,000,000 years and for 99.5 percent of the time we survived well as the hunter and gatherer, and proudly became head of the food chain. No, I’m not suggesting in any shape or form that we must go back to living a ‘cave man’ life style, (even though it would probably be healthier!), but I am suggesting we must learn from our genetic inheritance. It is suggested that 99% of our nutritional genes have remained unchanged over that humongous period of time, and yet our diet in the last 50 years has changed beyond all recognition. Totally.

Who are we, apart from just mere mortals to ever think we are able to dictate to ‘Mother Nature’ in providing today’s diet regime, when man’s body has changed and mutated over million years of evolution to accept what is now thought being a much narrower range of ‘acceptable foods’. Our body is doing and saying what it has always done over hundreds and thousands of generations before us, and yet we elect not to listen. We choose to ignore the signs and believe “I’ll be alright”. Our ancestors left us a heritage of which we must be proud – but sadly we are failing to leave anything like as comparable.

For now, obesity still remains a matter of choice…but choice means a decision.

Substituting Food Cravings for Weight Loss

Why we need to eat more Healthy Foods

Weight-Loss with SuperfoodsLoosing weight is often talked about these days. Weight loss has become one of the biggest topics in the internet. No wonder, since all the information about superfoods is so easily obtainable today. If it’s not someone asking how to successfully lose weight it’s some health company capitalizing on those who are overweight. Most people who are busy with weight loss since many years are desperately looking for the next diet that promises to shed those extra kilo’s.

I do not recommend any commercial weight loss program except it is based on natural healthy foods! I believe they are mostly “commercial” in nature and not really suited for weight loss. True weight loss programs should be initiated in conjunction with your Doctor. I do however, believe the regularly eaten food today is lacking many important nutrients and essential Antioxidants that are needed to have a healthy body. Often food supplements are required to replace these deficiencies.

Unwanted weight gain can often be attributed to over indulgence of a particular food in an attempt to replace an essential Vitamin the body is missing. When our body receives sufficient supply of nutrients, cravings will be reduced and we feel fuller and stisfied with lesser food.

Our daily food is lacking in many nutrients and of those nutrients that are still present, many are obtained through application of synthetic fertilizers and are being subject to pesticides and selective herbicides. The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” should now be going: “Two apples a day keeps the doctor away.” because we would have to eat twice as much to get the same level of nutrients.

The growing demand on food has lead to crops produced on a large scale these days, and are produced with more synthetic stimulants and pharmaceutics than it is good for us.

I you’re busy with weight control, your diets should be organic and nutrient rich with a range of all essential vitamins and minerals and antioxidants to assist suppressing cravings in between meals.

Organically grown fresh fruit and vegetables are the perfect option for a synthetic supply of vitamins and minerals in our diets. And only if a sufficient supply of these foods is not available, organic foods supplements are an option.

The goal for successive weight loss must be to maintain a sufficient supply of vitamins and minerals to prevent cravings that force and over consumption of food leading to more unwanted kilos.

Many processed foods contain large amounts of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives, which may block the supply, or uptake of vitamins and minerals into the body. Junk foods are designed with 3 things in mind. To get your money, to fill a taste craving, or to fill a hunger craving. They are not designed to provide necessary nutrients to your body.

The more real food we eat the more likely we will attain food satisfaction through sufficient nutrient consumption.

Adding a Vitamin or Superfood such as Acai berries into the daily diet will also assist with weight loss because you may need to consume less to receive your bodies necessary nutrient requirements. Acai is highly nutritious, extremely high on antioxidants, is very filing and suppresses food cravings for a long time making it an ideal superfood for weight loss

Nevertheless, you should always consult with your Doctor before you make any sudden changes in your diet or start taking food supplements over a longer period of time.

What is Wheatgrass good for?

The many benefits of Wheatgrass

Growing Wheatgrass at HomeWheatgrass juice. Every juice shop and many health food stores sell little cups of the dark green liquid that smells, and tastes, like freshly cut Summer grass clippings. Wheatgrass juice has become popular with the “soy and yogurt” set, but most people will turn their noses at the pungent smell of this concoction and stick to their coffees and sweetened teas.

They don’t know what they’re missing, because once you get past the taste, wheatgrass juice packs quite a concentrated nutritional and medicinal punch.

Wheatgrass is one of the many green plants that are grown through the process of sprouting. Sprouts are “total foods” because they contain a full range of essential dietary nutrients in combination with the enzymes that are necessary to ingest and absorb them. Humans are unable to snack on wheatgrass in it’s plant form, as the cellulose makeup makes it too fibrous for our digestive system.

In juice or powder form, however, wheatgrass breaks down through digestion very rapidly and almost immediately hit the bloodstream. The full menu of nutrients provided by wheatgrass juice is assimilated by the human body in twenty minutes or less, making it also an extremely effective source of quick energy.

Wheatgrass is nothing you have to go and buy in a store for a high price like other health food supplements, you can smply grow it at home in your own kitchen, and here is how:

Wheatgrass provides a great variety of benefits such as:

Energy Provider

Two ounces of fresh wheatgrass juice supplies the vitamin and mineral content of three pounds of organic vegetables. The same two ounces also provides a healthy energy boost equal to two cups of coffee, without the caffeine.

As a Complete Food Source

Wheatgrass is a nutritious source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, sodium, cobalt, and zinc. It is a complete meal with high levels of protein made up of thirty enzymes and is approximately 70% raw chlorophyll, an important component in muscle growth and the development of new blood cells.

For Body Cleansing and Detoxification

Wheatgrass contains many detergent capabilities and will work to drain the lymph system, carrying away many of the toxins found in cells and tissue. Muscles, tendons, and joints, sore from exertion or degenerative issues, will develop a buildup of mucous in the lymph area of the pain or injury. Wheatgrass will breakdown the mucous and allow it to drain. Wheatgrass is a powerful detoxification agent and will immediately react with toxins and mucous in the stomach before being absorbed into the blood, where it will wash away toxins stored throughout cells and fatty tissues.

Weight Loss

Wheatgrass has only approximately 10-15 calories per teaspoon and contains no fat, cholesterol, or refined sugars. It supplies close to a gram of protein per teaspoon and includes all eight of the essential amino acids, as well as thirteen of the remaining sixteen types. Due to it’s dense nutritional makeup and inherent quick energy producing capabilities, wheatgrass acts both as an appetite suppressant and a boost to the body’s systems. It is especially popular with athletes as the juice is absorbed into the bloodstream within twenty minutes of ingestion.

Preventing and Fighting Cancer

Wheatgrass contains high levels of beta-carotene which can contribute to lowering risks of certain types of cancer. For example, experiments have shown that high levels of beta-carotene can negate the accumulated effects of smoking, leading to a 40% reduction in the chances of developing lung cancer.

Okay, so wheatgrass juice isn’t the tastiest beverage around. It more than makes up for this by providing a two ounce shot of super charged nutritional and medicinal benefits. If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, then look into supplementing your diet with the superfood wheat-grass.

Diet vs Cleanse – Healthy Weight Loss

Detoxing the Body helps to Loose Weight

Henry Gray Anatomy of the Human Body

Cleansing has always had a place among humans, throughout all ages and cultures. For thousands of years, body purification has been a part of our rituals for health and well-being. It was also used in ancient times as a way to reconnect with the divine. Diets have just been in vogue during the last 150 years or so. You can look at the word diet in different ways. It has that painful reference to cutting way back on all the foods you love. It also can refer to a set of foods you allow yourself to consume without limit.

Recently diet products and supplements have turned into diet "systems". Diet products used to just burn fat or boost your metabolism so you burned more calories. They were fat burners. Now diet systems involve a cleanse portion as well, a metabolism booster and sometimes a natural appetite suppressant like Hoodia. So, what is the best way to healthy weight loss?

Let's talk about what a colon cleanse can do for healthy weight loss. Detox or cleansing is a way to clean out all the toxins, environmental pollutants, and wastes from all the drugs, toxins and chemicals ingested into our bodies. Think about all environmental poisoning from just the pesticides, insecticides and other contaminants that are on most of our foods. Think about all the chemicals in our air and water, food additives in processed food, antibiotics and more that we absorb into our cells. These environmental toxins and stresses assault our liver, blood and colon on a daily basis.

Our liver removes many of these toxins, but in today's world our liver is overloaded it just keeps dumping toxins into our colon and blood systems because it can't take the toxic load we are giving it. Repeated exposure to these toxins, pesticides, and antibiotics can take its toll on the body resulting in suppressed immune systems, unexplained aches, depression, weight gain, loss of memory, and low levels of energy.

"The colon is a sewage system, but by neglect and abuse it becomes a cesspool. When it is clean and normal, we are well and happy; let it stagnate, and it will distill the poisons of decay, fermentation and putrefaction into the blood, poisoning the brain and nervous system so that we become mentally depressed and irritable; it will poison the heart so that we are weak and listless; poisons the lungs so that the breath is foul; poisons the digestive organs so that we are distressed and bloated; and poisons the blood so that the skin is sallow and unhealthy. In short, every organ of the body is poisoned, and we age prematurely, look and feel old, the joints are stiff and painful, neuritis, dull eyes and a sluggish brain overtake us; the pleasure of living is gone."

Dr. Bernard Jensen Healthy weight loss starts with a colon cleanse. If the colon is cleansed on a regular basis it is better able to absorb nutrients into our cells. If our colon is full of compacted old waste it absorbs very little of the actual nutrients we eat. That is why the body keeps telling you that you are hungry and calls for more food. It is a vicious cycle. Healthy weight loss that lasts, comes from fine tuning your system, starting with a colon cleanse. A good colon cleanse will eliminate most sugar and salt cravings making that healthy weight loss even easier!

To keep your body running in top shape with high energy levels you should consider a colon, liver, blood and kidney cleanse once every three months or once every season. You can also buy some "health assurance" by adding a green superfood to your diet daily. That is what I call a diet! By: Marty Meshek Marty Meshek is a natural cleansing and energy specialist. Weight Loss Using Super Foods

Loosing Weight with Superfoods

Acai Pulp from Brazil - the best superfood for weight loss

According to nutrition experts there is two primary categories of foods that can be called Superfoods. These superfoods satisfy your stomach without stacking on the calories: fruits and vegetables. The nutrients that give fruits and vegetables that have stamina is fiber. Therefore, if fruits and vegetables are in the keeping it off superfood groups, dietary fibers could easily constitute the keeping it off super nutrient. Protein can be considered as another super nutrient. Lately it's getting more scientifically acknowledged that protein could assist to curbing the appetite. Protein can also supercharge your metabolism and offer the needed staying power. But it is pretty important that you select the right proteins for your diet wisely. Similar to other foods, if you are consuming more than your body requires, it will appear on the scales as weight gain, instead of weight loss.

The superfoods detailed below are smart, low-calorie options that will help towards your weight loss efforts:

Green Tea – Researchers suspect that the catechins (assistive phytochemicals) in green tea could activate weight loss through stimulating the body to burning calories and gently reducing body fat. Therefore indulging in either a hot cup or an iced glass of green tea, is something to consider.

Acai Berries – Acai berries come from south America and have become one of the superfoods known to help with weight loss. Acai is very high in the right omega fats, high in protein and fiber. Acai berries are also full of vitamins. The taste of Acai Berries is a bit chocolaty. Since the Acai berry is a completely natural product, it does not pose the same risks to health and wellbeing that synthetic weight loss treatments often do.

Broth – or tomato-based soup – Soups can assist to reducing hunger prior to meals times and increase your feeling of being full.

Green Salads – Consuming a low-calorie salad, which is defined without having the following, lot's of croutons, high fat dressings, and cheese. By opting to have this as a first course can make you feel full, thereby reducing the amount of food you eat for your main course. Wisely selecting the ingredients with high fiber content will aid in fighting those cravings later on in the day.

Yogurt – Try to get organic and probiotic Yogurt if you can. Adding yogurt to your healthy diet can encourage your weight loss efforts. Opting for a low fat yogurt will be more beneficial in fighting off those hunger pangs due to the combining of protein and carbohydrate. Probiotic yogurts are essentially yogurts containing live active cultures. Most natural or regular yogurt is a probiotic food. It contains bacteria of various sorts that are thought to be beneficial to the human body.

Beans – Beans contain a great combination of fiber and protein, beans aid in you feeling fuller for longer, which implies they will work to help curbing your appetite in between your regular meals.

Water – Water is probably the most important, it is your body's life elixir, and you need to be drinking a lot of water throughout the whole day. You should start your day by drinking 1 – 1.5 liters in the morning BEFORE you drink or consume anything else. Not even Green tee.
