Superfoods That Gets Rid of Wrinkles

We all know that the foods we eat directly influence our overall health, but did you know that some foods can help you get rid of your wrinkles? These superfoods contain powerful antioxidants that will not only make you feel better and have more energy, but they can help you look better too!

Antioxidants are nutrients commonly found in plant-based foods that prevent or inhibit the oxidation of other nutrients and toxins absorbed your body. These aid your immune system and protect the cells in your body from damage. Recent studies also indicate that antioxidants can prevent damage to your chromosomes and DNA strands.

When it comes to your skin, antioxidants can make a significant difference in its appearance and quality. One of the biggest ways antioxidants protect your skin is by fighting free radicals. These molecules attack and kill healthy cells. It is estimated that your skin faces trillions of these molecules each day. Some come from the outside world through things such as the sun, pollution, and x-rays. Free radicals also originate inside your body through things such as stress, smoking, and the absorption of processed foods and sugars.

If you read the nutritional information for your favorite fruits and vegetable, chances are the word ‘antioxidants’ won’t appear anywhere on the list. So how can you identify antioxidants? Some of the most common antioxidants today are vitamin A, C, and selenium.

Vitamin E is a powerful anti aging antioxidant that also helps to repair your DNA strands and improve your immune system. Other groups include carotenoids like beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, flavonoids such as flavanols and anthocyanidins, and Isothiocyanates like sulforaphane. Others include bilberry, coenzyme-Q10, ginkgo biloba, glutathione, lipoic acid, melatonin, and superoxide dismutase.

Now that you know what they are, how can you increase the amount of these antioxidants in your diet? Minerals like selenium come from foods like Brazil nuts and tuna. For vitamins A, C and E, consume more peppers, sunflower seeds, and dairy products. Other important superfoods include garlic, horseradish, and berries. Meat and meat products such as liver and fish also supply your body with necessary antioxidants.

For those looking to give their skin an added boost of antioxidants, consider replacing coffee and soda pop with items like green tea or a glass of wine. Snacking on dark chocolate and nuts is also a good idea. These results are magnified if you add anti-aging treatments such as an antioxidant fortified wrinkle cream. Homemade anti-aging products made from items like green tea and cucumbers also helps.

So there you go.

Increasing the number of antioxidant superfoods in your diet is a great way to repair aging skin and prevent it from suffering further damage. These foods are certainly not a cure, but they most certainly help especially when combined with other anti-aging treatments. Go ahead and try it. The worst thing that can happen is that you will look and feel years younger!

Acai and Goji Berries – Superfoods Or Just Exotic Berries?

Acai Berry Palm Trees in BrazilIn recent years, Acai and Goji berry fruits have become extremely popular across the world, particularly in North America. The Acai and Goji health food extracts are sold separately, and in combined extract form as Acai Goji juices and health food supplements. Many claims have been made about the marvelous health benefits of Acai and Goji berries; some based on fact, others quite exaggerated. So let's just forget the hype and examine the facts.

The Acai berry is the fruit of the Acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea), which grows wild in Central and South America, particularly in the rain forests of Brazil. Each tree produces two crops of Acai berries annually, with between 700 and 900 berries per crop. Acai berries are purple-black in color, similar in appearance to, but smaller than, a grape. The Acai berry is known also as the Amazon berry, Brazilian berry and Brazilian palm berry.

The Goji berry is the fruit of the Lycium barbarum plant, now grown in many parts of the world, but mostly in China, Mongolia and the Tibetan Himalayas. Goji is believed to have originated in Asia and Southeast Europe many thousands of years ago. The Goji is a small red berry, similar in shape to a currant and known by several other names including Wolf berry, Chinese wolfberry, Mede berry, Lycium, Tibetan Goji, Himalayan Goji and Matrimony berry.

Native populations have used Acai and Goji berries for centuries for their nutritional and medicinal benefits. Contemporary scientific research has confirmed what the native populations have always known: Acai and Goji have real and substantial health benefits.

Scientists have confirmed that the superior antioxidant properties of these highly nutritious fruits can significantly decrease the destructive nature of free radicals – the byproducts produced by the body that can harm your immune system. Research has even found that the Acai berry has a far greater antioxidant density than red wine and green tea!

According to recent studies, Acai berries have a higher calorie (and hence energy) content than Goji berries and greater densities of fiber and "good" fats (oleic acid). Goji berries however have higher concentrations of rich minerals, vitamins, amino acids and carbohydrates.

Compared with many other fruits and foods, both Acai and Goji are high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, dietary fibers and healthy fats. Together these provide significant benefits for the cardiovascular system, brain, skin, joints, and immune system; and also assist with disease prevention, digestion, appetite suppression and healthy aging.

Little wonder there has been a massive increase in sales of Acai and Goji products in recent years confirming the rating of these berries as nature's Superfoods.

Acai Berries – Superfood or Part of the Health and Wellness Craze

The acai berry (pronounced ah-SAH-ee) snd its many benefits has spread throughout the country like wild fire. There's not a magazine, Internet site or even your own email that doesn't espouse the wonders of acai. Most people have heard about it through word of mouth because of their friends' and family members touting their positive experiences with these berries and their amazing abilities. However, instead of fading out like the latest fad, it has become even more popular. So what is the acai berry and what are the benefits that have claimed to change so many lives?

Acai berries are grown in the Amazon on palm trees. The berries are removed from the trees, loaded onto ships and sent to processing centers. They are made part of many types of foods, including shakes, juice and certain candy to name a few. More recently, acai is being used as powders and capsules for losing weight. But, the more popular use has been in functional health beverages or juice which is sold in local retail outlets or through product distributors.

The little purple berry has been named one of the best superfoods which means it is very healthy to consume. However, many people are not aware of the many benefits of the berry. The first and most notable is the simple fact that the acai berry in any form, provides stamina and energy. The antioxidants contained in the berries improves mental alertness, body detoxification, sexual function, and maintenance of several major body systems such as the cardiovascular and digestive systems.

Additionally, the acai berry contains anthocyanins and falvonoids which are powerful antioxidants in their own right. They play a role in cell protection in the body, protect against free radicals which are defined as harmful byproducts produced in the body and it is also believed that it helps with aging and may reduce the risk of cancer.

The most prominent is the fact that the acai berry contains 33 times the anthocyanins of red wine grapes. Anthocyanins have been found to demonstrate many potential medical effects as the treatment of fibrocystic breast disease and diabetic retinopathy. It also contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, C and E, which are vital in every diet. A complex of essential amino acids matched with valuable minerals is very important for proper muscle contraction and regeneration.

There are some people that eat acai berries to address various health conditions. But depending on which study you read or website, there are naysayers that claim the acai berries have no known health benefit. However, other studies show that the properties contained in the little berry has produced evidence that shows the nutritional and health benefits are really genuine. Of course, it remains up to the person consuming the product to know for sure.

Acai Berry Superfoods – Are Acai Berries Really That Healthy?

The Health Benefits of Acai Berries

Acai Berries on the Palm Tree"Acai Berries are superfoods!" We're hearing it everywhere now. But is it true? Are Acai Berries really that healthy? In time when every food seems to be artificial and medical companies stuff us with the newest cures for everything, some people try to find help using natural products to cure the various health problems.

Over time we forgot how powerful nature can be, after all we only duplicate its achievements in medicine. That is why a category of super foods has been invented, foods so packed with healthy nutrients that they can be called natural medicine or superfoods.

Probably the most wide spread family of superfoods are vegetables from 'Allium' family – vegetables like garlic, onions or leeks. This not very glamorous group of vegetables, contains flavonoids, which stimulate production of antioxidants in the liver, thus detoxifying your body.

Up until today  blueberries where one of the most famous superfoods. They have a high number of antioxidants (ORAC value), anthocyanins and phytochemicals, preventing aging, cancer and numerous brain diseases. Blueberries are the food of choice for many healthy people in Europe and the USA.

Recently, the spotlight has been taken off the Blueberries by a new berry, the Acai Berry.

Is the Acai Berry the #1 Superfood?

When acai berries where first introduced to the public eye, there were numerous talks about how healthy it is. However, publicity seemed to focus all of it's attention on the very high antioxidants level, leaving in the background wealth of other healthy details about this berry.

The first thing I want to mention about the Acai Berry, is the very high level of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are located mainly in peels of vegetables/fruits. They offer a very powerful protection against harmful free radicals, which develop as a result of exposure to radiation, the UV light, smoking, smog and various other metabolic processes.

Not only that, they also preserve delicate antioxidants within the fruit. While, you may have heard that red whine has a large number of anthocyanins, Acai has 10 to 30 times more, depending on the quality and ripeness of the berries. Acai berry is also very high on dietary fiber. 100 grams of Acai berries contain 45 grams of fiber.Acai Berries are rich in healthy unsaturated fats from omega family, which have been proven to help you with anything from your brain to preventing cancer. In Acai you will find mainly the most important omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids.

Additionally, acai berries contain a lot of protein and amino acids. Acai has 19 different amino acids, which are crucial for growth, maintenance and repair of your body tissues. Our bodies can produce only 11 of these amino acids, so you have to supply the rest with your diet.

Acai also offers three different plant sterols: sigmasterol, campesterol and B-sitosterol. These three sterols are invaluable to health of your heart. This concludes the benefits of Acai Berries. Even if you don't believe in the weight loss hype of acai berries (acai berries are beneficial for weight loss due to stopping the carving for food), these berries are still the best choice of superfoods! With more than 100,000  (102,700 μ mol TE/100 gram),it is the world's antioxidant richest fruit known today!

Health Benefits of Oranges – A Natural Superfood

Oranges Superfoods IllustrationOften, we take the simple fruit many of us see daily, for granted. Oranges are available in grocery stores and markets, in almost every country in the world. They grow on the trees in the yards of many of my family and friends throughout the USA. Oranges also grow in Europe and in some Asian countries like China. Often ignored in favor of processed foods from our local grocery stores, oranges are a 100% natural superfood with many health and healing benefits.

What is so Super on Oranges?

First of all the Vitamin C,as weall know: Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid, the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C is 200-1000 mg. An orange contains almost 100 mg of this nutrient. Vitamin C is used in the treatment and prevention of most cancers because of its protection from free radicals. It also helps prevent and treat atherosclerosis, heart disease, infections, colds and flu, asthma attacks, lung inflammation, cataracts and glaucoma. How many of us reach for the Vitamin C when we are experiencing a cold?

Cancer fighter: Vitamin C is also a very powerful antioxidant and an important cancer fighter. When my dad was diagnosed with Stage IV liver and prostate cancer, we took matters out of the hands of traditional medicine. After testing for Vitamin deficiencies we started Vitamin C IV's for 2 weeks. The results in health were amazing. Besides the benefits of Vitamin C in oranges, the peel contains a flavonoid called hesperidin, which is a natural cancer fighter, with added benefits of lowering bad cholesterol and normalizing blood pressure.

Then there is Fiber: The recommended intake of fiber is 25 to 35 grams daily. The fleshy portion of an orange contains about 3.1 grams of fiber, making it a great source for your dietary requirements. Include the orange zest in your diet and the fiber increases to 6 grams per fruit. Combine this with other fruits and vegetables and you can easily provide the fiber you need daily. 2 medium oranges without utilizing the peel, 2 medium bananas and 2 medium apples daily will more than meet your fiber needs.

Oranges contain Natural Oils: The natural oil is in the skin of the oranges. This oil acts as a natural exfoliator and moisturizer for your skin. Combined with the Vitamin C benefits, oranges will keep your skin looking young and smooth.

It's Sweet,, Affordable and Nutrient Packed: The average unpeeled orange provides 3.1 grams of fiber, 1 gram of protein and approximately 69 calories of energy, 48 of which is from natural sugars. An orange contains about 60 mg of calcium, 15 mg of magnesium, and 232 mg of potassium. It is a great source of Vitamin C, folate, choline, Vitamin A and beta carotene. The orange is therefor definitely to be placed amongst the superfoods.

What to do with Orange Peel: Orange peels are useful for exfoliating scrubs, orange peel oil baths are beneficial to the skin, orange zest has cancer fighting properties and enhances many cooking and baking recipes, dried orange peel contains oil and works great as high octane kindling fuel to start any fire, fresh orange peel acts as a natural cat, slug and ant repellent when sprinkled around your garden, orange peel is a deodorizer, orange peel can help revitalize and soften hard brown sugar, fresh orange peel rubbed on your skin will repel mosquitoes, the oil from the peels works as a degreaser, orange peel is a natural aroma therapy for depression, and orange peel has been used by the Chinese for centuries to help lower high blood pressure. Beyond the benefits of the fleshy portion of the orange, you can see that the entire orange has many uses.

As you can see, oranges are a powerhouse all-natural superfood to be included in your diet. The orange is definitely an amazing food. If you are one of the fortunate to have your own trees producing oranges, don't let this valuable fruit go to waste. If you have somewhere too many oranges, provide the excess to the homeless and to food banks.

Eat Plants For Healthier Lifestyle

Vegetables, Leafy Greens and Lots of Fresh Fruits

The 200 Best Superfoods - A Must Read Book!I had a fine weekend last month, while I was taking my 2 daughters to Borders, I got some books for them and on my way to the cashier, I saw this book. It caught my attention by its title: The 200 Superfoods That Will Save Your Life, by Deborah A. Klein, M.S., RD. Just out of curiosity for wanting to know what are the Superfoods in the book, I bought it and took it home, one of the reasons beiing that I have 2 kids who don't like much to eat fruits and vegetables, desperate to find out more about nutritious food.

I opened the book and went through the list of the 200 superfoods listed in the contents menu. Interesting enough, 95% of the food listed in this book is all plants. Asked yourself, how many percent of plants you consumed in your daily diets? I guess your answer would probably is less than 5%…

Everybody wants to live healthier; but how many of us are doing something about it? One of my very close friends, who is a vegan, he told me that the root of most diseases come from eating meat. Whether you choose to believe it or not, it is already a fact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated in its report, The State of Aging and Health in America 2007, poor nutrition from daily diets is one of the major factors that causes of more than third of all deaths in the US. The CDC also found out that people who were 65 years of age or older were more likely than any other group to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Ask yourself another question, when you go to a restaurant or cook for your family; how often you select the food because of its nutrition, and how often you select because of its taste?

Let me make some bold statements:

  • Food is supposed to give us strength.
  • Food is supposed to give us energy.
  • Food is supposed to give us some healing properties.

Unfortunately, most of the food we have nowadays is all processed food, or industrialized food. They all taste very nice. But, our body doesn't need delicious food, what our body need is the nutrition from the right food!

There are tons of books, articles and researches you can find in the Internet about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. But yet, not many people sense the danger of their bad habit of daily diets. Just wish that you whom put your effort to finish reading this article would try to eat more plants and less meat from now.

The 3 Best Raw Superfoods

A Short Superfoods List of the Three Most Important Superfoods

Raw Food Diet with Healthy GreensIf you could choose only three food types to ensure you lived healthily, what would they be? Surely if you could live on just three types of food, these would have to be the best raw superfoods that contain more nutrients than any other and ensure a long term balanced diet.

Raw Foods are the simplest, healthiest, tastiest food available to us. Simplest in that the nutrients are retained and not lost through cooking. Healthiest in that they give your skin a radiant glow and your hair shines; you shed pounds naturally and lose most of your bad cholesterol. Tastiest in that the combinations of food makes some fantastic recipes you will never have considered.

But which 3 foods should be chosen above all others?

Before any food is chosen, you need to be sure you drink plenty of water. Water combines with the food to help the body and digestive system function properly. Generally the rule of thumb is to drink 2 litres of water per day, but this will be higher if you are in a hot or dry place or have been exercising.

1. Smoothies

A smoothie is an amazing way to consume a wide variety of raw fruit and vegetables in an easy tasty way. Smoothies can be made very easily with a food processor or blender. They can be made with or without yogurt and you can mix in whole fruit which provide a fantastic source of protein, vitamins and minerals, whilst retaining the fruits' fibre which is important for stimulating digestion and combating water retention and bloating.

The beauty of smoothies is that you can combine whichever fruit or vegetables you have to hand so each smoothie is a different mix. A key element of a balanced diet is to consume a wide variety of different food.

2 Green Vegetables

The greener a vegetable, the healthier it is. Not a bad way to determine what to eat. Pretty much all green vegetables are bursting with nutrients and vitamins which boost your health and bodily functions.

The pick of the greens must be the following 5 vegetables:

  • Celery
  • Watercress
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Kale

These 5 have such a large range of nutrients and vitamins between them that just eating them raw would give your health a huge boost, providing a body detox and dramatically lowering cholesterol.

3. Seeds

Three seeds in particular possess wonderful qualities

  • Sunflower seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds

A combination of these 3 types of seeds makes a surprisingly filling snack and takes the edge off hunger pangs.

They are helpful to intestinal health, cleansing the digestive system and preventing constipation, while pectin, the soluble fibre in sunflower seeds, is especially powerful as a detoxifier. Sunflower seeds strengthen the eyesight, sesame seeds strengthen the heart whilst pumpkin seeds help in wound healing.

Where Do I Get My Protein on a Raw Food Diet?

Raw Food Protein Sources

Amino Acid Illustration - Protein and SuperfoodsSince I started my raw foods diet in June 2010, one of the most frequently asked questions from my friends was where I would get my protein from? Recently even my brother expressed his concern about my protein needs. It was then I realized how important this question really is, I feel that it is my responsibility to fully explain the protein sources to those who are interested in raw food diet or maybe are concerned for themselves or their friends or family members.

Let's first look into what protein actually is…

We have all learned in school that our body consists to more than 65% of water, making up for our primary building block. The second most abundant building block of our body is protein. Our hair, skin, nails, organs, muscles, bones, and every single cell is made up of protein molecules. All protein molecules consist of a chain of amino acids. You may have heard the term "essential amino acids" – these are amino acids that cannot be used by a human body. Up to today we know about20 essential amino acids that we must include in our diet to receive the full protein requirement. (apples contain 18 of these amino acids) All plants have at least some protein because all of them contain at least one or more amino acids; the building blocks of protein.

The difference between complex proteins found in meat, dairy, and fish and the individual amino acids found in plant food is explained very well by Victoria Boutenko in her book "Green for Life:"

"It is clear that the body has to work a lot less when creating protein from the assortment of individual amino acids from greens, rather than the already combined, long molecules from protein, assembled according to the foreign patterns of a totally different creature such as a cow or a chicken"

When you eat leafy greens and other vegetables that contain lots of protein, you get  custom made amino acids for your body, freshly made with sunshine and chlorophyll, which the body will use to repair and to rebuild its parts according to your needs. Your body is a perfect working machine in need of the right fuel; you wouldn't put diesel into a Ferrari tank would you?

Myoglobin - Animal ProteinBut this is exactly what happens when you feed your body with complex animal proteins. Your body has a hard time trying to make a perfect molecule of protein out of someone else's molecules, which consist of totally different combinations of amino acids.  In addition to this already bad result, your body will most likely also receive a lot of unnecessary parts that are hard to digest and do more harm than they would do good. These parts would be floating around in your blood similar to waste for a long time, causing allergies and many other health problems. Just look at the picture; honestly, who would want to eat something that looks like that?

Soy proteins are meanwhile also known to do more harm than good and you should not consume soy products more than twice a week, The best plant based proteins are found in Spirulina, in Chlorella and in Seaweed. Spinach and other Leafy Greens from the superfoods section are also very good protein sources. And we should not forget Raw Cacao and Fresh Coconuts. If you don't mind eating an egg every then and when; organic eggs are near to 100% protein and totally healthy, especially for people who are exercising a lot and try to build some muscles!

Stay Healthy and Merry X-mas to you all!
