Superfoods are a class of foods that are considered to be better than other foods because they contain more nutritional elements and antioxidants. It is common sense that some foods are better than others, for example, an apple is more nutritious than a bag of potato chips, and broccoli is healthier than eating gummy bears. Fact is that there are highly loaded superfoods that can help us to live healthier and have a more vibrant live and they can even prolong or lifespan.

All Superfoods have a high concentration of important nutrients and they are typically low in calories and fat. Many of these nutrients have been proven to be helpful in the prevention of various diseases, and some are even able to reverse the effects of aging! Going on a diet that is rich in all the vital nutrients that is found in these superfoods can help prevent cardiovascular disease, certain Cancers, Type II Diabetes, Hypertension, Parkinson and Alzheimer's .

Most of these extremely nutritious superfoods also contain a great variety of antioxidants, phytonutrients, polyphenols, omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, and trace minerals. Superfoods are best eaten wholevas they come in nature with as little processing as possible. Superfoods are very complex and we don't know all of their benefits yet. Many superfoods contain hundreds of compounds and nutrients that have yet to be discovered.

Superfood researchers suggests that the nutrients from individual superfoods work best in combination with each other. This is the reason why it is best to be informed about as many healthy foods as possible rather than focus on just a few that you know already. Nutrients from a wide range of foods work together to promote good health and to prevent the problems like cancer and prematurely aging.

How are Superfoods measured?

Since a few year only we can measure antioxidants in different foods and the surprises don't stop coming. The ORAC scale, or the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, measures the antioxidant levels of a superfoods. ORAC is a measurement of how much antioxidants contained in the particular food were able to destroy oxygen free radicals in a test tube. The higher the ORAC number the higher the antioxidant capacity of the food. All antioxidant capacity measures are estimated by Ferric Reducing Power and are expressed as Micromole Trolox Equivalent µ(TE) per 100 grams or 3.53 ounces. The ORAC measurement is accurate up to ±5%.

There is a whole list of superfoods that score high on the ORAC scale but the fruit that scores by far the highest is the Acai berry, coming from the rain forests of Brazil. The purple little berries grow on palm trees and are loaded with antioxidants, polyphenols, essential fatty omega acids and the full range of amino acids essential to our health. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are needed for muscle building.

Other foods that are considered to be superfoods, include all of the berries, including raw cocoa, blueberries and cranberries, spinach and many other leafy greens, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, wild salmon, walnuts and other nuts green tea and dark chocolate.

Eating a healthy and balanced diet that includes the superior nutrition of the healthiest foods on earth is probably the very best way in the world to remain healthy and strong. Blueberries – Super Food For a Reason

What makes blueberries a superfood?

Blueberries don't really look anything special. Yet they are quite delicious and versatile. In fact it is strange to believe that such a small fruit is actually a superfood. In the interests of improving my health and that of my family I've been doing some studying about superfoods, the pros, cons and benefits. I'm also interested in how we can increase our use of these superfoods in our diet without blowing the budget. Consequently, I'm not only learning all about superfoods and their uses but how to grow them myself (wherever practical).

Blueberries are a superfood because they are packed with anti-oxidants and phytonutrients. Why are these important? Antioxidants help reduce free radicals in our bodies and are widely believed to help prevent heart disease and cancer. Phytonutrients are still undergoing research but it is known that? they also help to reduce free radicals. It is also the fact that they are rich in phytonutrients that means although they do not contain significant amounts of Vitamins C or E the body receives as much antioxident protection as if? you had taken vitamin C and E. These little blue berries also contain potassium (an essential mineral for strengthening blood vessels) and vitamin C. It is this richness in vitamins and minerals that makes them a superfood and the top choice for adding to a healthy diet. By adding blueberries to your diet you can help?lower your risk of heart disease and cancer. Another amazing benefit is that? they are also anti-inflammatory. Another amazing benefit is the effect that they have on our brain. Research has shown that blueberries high quantities of phytonutrients help improve the communication between brain cells and can delay the onset of dementia and aging. When choosing your blueberries you need to look for the darker coloured berries as the darker the colour the more anti-oxidents they contain. Growing your own blueberries is relatively simple and will give you a fresh supply but the best part is you can also freeze them. Frozen and dried blueberries are just as beneficial to your health and diet as fresh. Fresh, frozen or dried there really is no reason not to have blueberries in your home ready to add to your diet every day. You do not have to eat blueberries by the handful. Instead you can add them to a range of delicious recipes. In fact adding blueberries to a smoothie has the added advantage of giving you additional fruit portions and calcium. A very simple idea for a smoothie is to add 1 cup of blueberries, to 1 cup of pro-biotic low fat natural yoghurt, half a cup of fruit juice (orange or pineapple are great) and a teaspoon of honey. Mix in a blender or smoothie maker and serve. Another delicious and simple way to add blueberries to your diet is to make blueberry muffins or fruity granola pots. Both of these dishes are great ways to get your children to eat blueberries. Wheatgrass Barley Grass and Green Superfoods

It's all about going Green

Wheatgrass and Barley Grass are SuperfoodsWheatgrass, Barley Grass and other "cereal grasses" are nutrient powerhouses. The young tender leaves of the wheatgrass, barley grass, oat and rye plants have a nutrient density like no other plants.. During their early stages of growth, these grasses are actually considered to be vegetables, not grains. Once they reach their nutritional peak, usually after seven days, just before developing into a firm stalk, the grasses are harvested and grinded into juice, or low-temperature dehydrated into a whole food powder, which preserves all the natural nutrients and enzymes in the grasses.

Green Superfoods like Cereal grasses are richer than ordinary vegetables in many nutrients, including antioxidants like beta-carotene. They're also very rich in phytonutrients, and have what early researchers called 'The Grass Juice Factor'. This unidentifiable 'factor' was consistent evidence that livestock and other animals raised with these 'cereal grasses' as part of their diets showed superior health and vitality when compared to animals raised on more conventional feeds. Prominent food scientists Charles Schnabel and Dr. George Kohler began researching the effects of these powerful foods in the 1920's and 30's. They discovered uniquely high amounts of diverse nutrients and food factors in the grasses, when compared to other vegetables. "15 lbs of wheat grass is equal in overall nutritional value to over 350 lbs of ordinary vegetables,' said Schnabel.

After Schnabel and Kohler's findings were recognized and endorsed by government agencies, dehydrated wheat grass tablets were the first 'multivitamins' sold nationwide, and were even prescribed by doctors for various ailments. It wasn't until the chemical revolution in the 1950's that consumers began forsaking nature's nutrients in favor of manmade vitamins. But…results don't lie, and over the last few decades there has fortunately been a renewed interest and appreciation for whole food nutrition, and green superfoods like cereal grasses.

Green Superfoods such as wheatgrass are an awesome addition to anyone's daily diet. They are:

  • Super-rich in Antioxidant beta carotene
  • Source of Alkalizing trace minerals and Phytonutrients
  • Big nutritional punch per gram vs. many common vegetables

Superfoods are in general ultra-concentrated sources of broad spectrum nutrients
When shopping for a wheatgrass / barley grass product / green foods product, there's a few requirements you should have. A good green superfood product should:

  • Use organically grown grasses
  • Be concentrated and in a form easy to drink and digest
  • Have a dark green look, a smooth rich texture, and a rich, 'greens' scent
  • Be wild-crafted and all-natural, with no added synthetic ingredients
  • Use no low cost fillers such as soy lecithin or apple pectin fiber
  • Have additional support super-ingredients like spirulina and chlorella

In my opinion, green superfoods are the absolute best whole food supplement to your daily diet.

Remember, invest into your health, and your life will thank you!
