Organic Superfood

“Superfood” is a term coined to define foods rich in phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are certain organic constituents of plants. Nutritionists agree that these phytonutrients have health-promoting benefits. Fruits and vegetables, along with nuts, certain teas like green tea, grains, and legumes are rich sources of phytonutrients. Phytonutrients consist of carotenoids, phytosterols, isoflavones (including genistein and daidzen), coumarins, indoles, lignans, flavonoids and organosulfurs. Phytonutrients are commonly associated with the color of foods. There is a variety of colors in every day foods that we eat. Such colors like vibrant green, bright juicy red, white, tempting yellow-orange and blue-purple not only add color to our plate, but add a variety of nutrients as well. Because of this dieticians recommend the rainbow diet-a variety of colored foods every day.Evidence that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables protects human health is accumulating from large population studies, human feeding studies, and cell culture studies. As research expands, more conclusive results are awaited. “For now”, the USDA Agriculture Research Center states, “it appears that an effective strategy for reducing risk of cancer and heart disease is to increase consumption of phytonutrient-rich foods including fruits, vegetables, grains and teas.”Foods rich in phytonutrients are:

  • All the brightly colored foods such as tomatoes, squashes, carrots-any food which is yellow and orange, green or red.
  • Fruits which include citrus fruits and berries
  • Flaxseeds
  • Whole grains and legumes
  • Garlic and leeks
  • Green teas
  • Members of the cabbage family known as cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli or romaine lettuce
  • Dark leafy greens such as spinach
  • Soybeans

The National Cancer Institute recommends eating at least 5 – 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. On average, Americans consume 3.3 servings of vegetables a day. Dark green vegetables and deep yellow vegetables each represent only 0.2 daily servings. About 48% of Americans consume less than one serving of fruit a day. Fruits and vegetables retain more nutrients when they are organic. The word “organic” signifies that these foods are totally naturally. No pesticides, or artificial fertilizers are used to grow organic foods. There is no genetic modification. Foods claiming to be organic must be free of artificial food additives, and are often processed with fewer artificial methods, materials and conditions. Organic food production is legally regulated.

Organic Superfoods
Organic Superfoods contain a combination of superfoods as natural, organic ingredients in a synergistic ratio. You get a good dose of phytonutrients in one single serving! It is important to read the label carefully to make sure you are buying a product made with organic ingredients as these have the highest nutritive value and are more easily digested by the body. Organic superfoods are not meant to be a replacement for food. But not all of us can consistently eat the required fruit and vegetables we need each day. Superfoods can augment your daily diet to make sure you are getting phytonutrient power for optimum health protection.

The Health Benefits of Choosing Organic Superfoods

Choosing Organic Superfoods for your Health

Apple - Superfood with 18 amino acidsAs you may already be aware, superfoods offer you a wide range of nutrients that can make you feel and look better by helping reduce your risk of disease and by fighting the signs of aging (thanks to all of those antioxidants). What you may not know is that to get the best return on your investment, you really need to purchase organic superfoods.

If a food has been certified organic by the United States Department of Agriculture, the distinction means the food was grown without fake pesticides and fertilizers. These fake or synthetic chemicals can be extremely dangerous to our health, so combining them with superfoods to make us healthier just doesn’t make sense.

A study on peaches, for example, found that 98% contained high levels of pesticides even after they were washed and cleaned. These are, of course, not organically grown peaches. While the study doesn’t address the quantities of those pesticides left behind, other research suggests these dangerous compounds can build up in your system so it doesn’t take much on each peach to cause major health problems down the road.

Synthetic chemicals like these often contain carcinogens, better known as cancer causing agents. That means eating them can increase your risk of developing a wide range of cancers. Again, this is where eating organic superfoods makes sense. If you want to consume antioxidants in those foods to reduce your cancer risk, then it doesn’t make sense to be increasing your risk at the same time. You won’t be doing yourself any favors.

If you’re expecting a child or hoping to start a family, organic superfoods make sense for you, too. All of the good nutrients in superfoods can do wonderful things for an unborn baby who is relying on you to fulfill his or her nutritional needs. Without a healthy diet, your child could experience health problems that could last a lifetime. Additionally, the use of pesticides, such as those used on non-organic produce, has been linked to fetal growth problems in studies in New York City.

Furthermore, if you are a parent trying to feed your child healthy foods, you don’t want to offer them a plate of blueberries, pumpkin, spinach or other foods that have been covered in dangerous chemicals. By choosing organic superfoods, you can be confident that you are giving your kids a healthy diet that isn’t tainted by carcinogens or other dangerous chemicals.

The bottom line is that organic superfoods just make more sense. They may cost a little more. You may need to drive to a different store. But, overall, you are going to benefit from delicious, healthy foods that are safe to eat.

Superfood Nutrition 101!

What is a superfood? I often get this question whenever I mention that my diet consists primarily of organic foods and in particular organic superfoods. Superfoods are foods which are extremely nutrient dense and give you the biggest bang for your buck compared to other foods. They contain amazing medicinal like properties in that they have been used in different cultures for thousands of years for healing, for endurance, for vibrant health, and for their so called anti-aging characteristics.

They usually are high in antioxidants and minerals as well as enzyme rich. There are different levels of superfoods. In fact some superfoods are very well known and most people do not realize they are eating what has been “labeled” as a superfood. By labeled, I mean they are sometimes marketed as superfoods because there tends to be some evidence the foods are a healthier alternative and perhaps this is true, but in fact a true superfood will be at its healthiest state when it is in raw, uncooked form. Foods often marketed as superfoods include foods such as Garlic, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, papaya, Spinach, Parsley, Oats, Turkey, Eggs, Walnuts, Pumpkin, Almonds, Figs, Chili Peppers, Cayenne pepper, Pomegranate, Blueberries, raspberries, and Wild salmon. Some of these are in fact extremely healthy foods. Many of us have heard of these foods and have eaten them time and time again. It is certainly better to get the organic or wild variety of these foods in that they are even more “super” without the added chemicals and preservatives.

Some other superfoods are not as well known. These are the foods which can get you to the next level of Xtreme Health(TM). I have spent the last year researching some of these superfoods which I consider to be some of the best foods in the world and have used them in my daily diet with tremendous success. These superfoods which I am about to talk about are absolutely amazing and have helped cultures for thousands of years avoid famine and disease. Kings and queens would go to war to get more of these superfoods. For instance, it has been said that Alexander the great was persuaded by Aristotle to invade Egypt for the Aloe Vera plant so he could use it on his injured soldiers. Back then we didn’t have clinical studies to tell us what was good and bad for us. They used foods to treat people and they either worked or didn’t work. This process over 1000’s of years brought the greatest of superfoods and herbs to the forefront of visibility by the leaders of great countries.

The following are some of the greatest superfoods I have learned about over the last year and for which are available on the internet as well as local health food stores. Hemp Seeds and Hemp Protein, Bee Pollen, Wild Honey, Maca powder, Spirulina, Blue Green Algae, Chlorella, Sprouts, Wheat grass, Barley Grass, Dulse, Kelp, Goji Berries, Cacao beans, Organic MSM, Avocado’s, Coconut and coconut oil, Acai berries, Mangosteen, Agave Nectar, Royal Jelly, Flax seeds, and Green Tea.

Spirulina in particular is a food which fed mexico city for thousands of years. It is the highest source of protein on the planet (62% protein). It is great mixed with just plain spring water. Goji berries are another complete protein source. They are high in antioxidants, iron and vitamin C and contain 21 trace minerals and many other nutrients. They are small light and portable. I usually eat just one handful of goji berries before a cross country flight and do not have to eat anything the entire flight. Cacao beans are the actual raw chocolate bean which most people have never eaten. Most are familiar with the processed version of cacao called cocoa or chocolate which is mostly sugar and dairy mixed together with the cacao bean.

Most of these superfoods can be obtained in powdered form and added to your favorite super smoothie in the morning. You will get just about every vitamin, mineral, amino acid, good fat (Omega 3, 6 and 9) and hundreds of other phytonutrients by eating these foods. Every longevity and anti-aging diet should not be without these superfoods. Athletes in particular whose bodies are hungry for antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and minerals should incorporate these foods into their diet.

Cheers to living to 125 years old and beyond. You can take this to any level you want.

Level A – Xtreme Health(TM)

Follow all the suggestions in this article over the course of the next several months

Level B – Much better than most people

Drink a smoothie every morning containing at least one of the superfoods in this article
