Eat Plants For Healthier Lifestyle

Vegetables, Leafy Greens and Lots of Fresh Fruits

The 200 Best Superfoods - A Must Read Book!I had a fine weekend last month, while I was taking my 2 daughters to Borders, I got some books for them and on my way to the cashier, I saw this book. It caught my attention by its title: The 200 Superfoods That Will Save Your Life, by Deborah A. Klein, M.S., RD. Just out of curiosity for wanting to know what are the Superfoods in the book, I bought it and took it home, one of the reasons beiing that I have 2 kids who don't like much to eat fruits and vegetables, desperate to find out more about nutritious food.

I opened the book and went through the list of the 200 superfoods listed in the contents menu. Interesting enough, 95% of the food listed in this book is all plants. Asked yourself, how many percent of plants you consumed in your daily diets? I guess your answer would probably is less than 5%…

Everybody wants to live healthier; but how many of us are doing something about it? One of my very close friends, who is a vegan, he told me that the root of most diseases come from eating meat. Whether you choose to believe it or not, it is already a fact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated in its report, The State of Aging and Health in America 2007, poor nutrition from daily diets is one of the major factors that causes of more than third of all deaths in the US. The CDC also found out that people who were 65 years of age or older were more likely than any other group to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Ask yourself another question, when you go to a restaurant or cook for your family; how often you select the food because of its nutrition, and how often you select because of its taste?

Let me make some bold statements:

  • Food is supposed to give us strength.
  • Food is supposed to give us energy.
  • Food is supposed to give us some healing properties.

Unfortunately, most of the food we have nowadays is all processed food, or industrialized food. They all taste very nice. But, our body doesn't need delicious food, what our body need is the nutrition from the right food!

There are tons of books, articles and researches you can find in the Internet about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. But yet, not many people sense the danger of their bad habit of daily diets. Just wish that you whom put your effort to finish reading this article would try to eat more plants and less meat from now.

The 3 Best Raw Superfoods

A Short Superfoods List of the Three Most Important Superfoods

Raw Food Diet with Healthy GreensIf you could choose only three food types to ensure you lived healthily, what would they be? Surely if you could live on just three types of food, these would have to be the best raw superfoods that contain more nutrients than any other and ensure a long term balanced diet.

Raw Foods are the simplest, healthiest, tastiest food available to us. Simplest in that the nutrients are retained and not lost through cooking. Healthiest in that they give your skin a radiant glow and your hair shines; you shed pounds naturally and lose most of your bad cholesterol. Tastiest in that the combinations of food makes some fantastic recipes you will never have considered.

But which 3 foods should be chosen above all others?

Before any food is chosen, you need to be sure you drink plenty of water. Water combines with the food to help the body and digestive system function properly. Generally the rule of thumb is to drink 2 litres of water per day, but this will be higher if you are in a hot or dry place or have been exercising.

1. Smoothies

A smoothie is an amazing way to consume a wide variety of raw fruit and vegetables in an easy tasty way. Smoothies can be made very easily with a food processor or blender. They can be made with or without yogurt and you can mix in whole fruit which provide a fantastic source of protein, vitamins and minerals, whilst retaining the fruits' fibre which is important for stimulating digestion and combating water retention and bloating.

The beauty of smoothies is that you can combine whichever fruit or vegetables you have to hand so each smoothie is a different mix. A key element of a balanced diet is to consume a wide variety of different food.

2 Green Vegetables

The greener a vegetable, the healthier it is. Not a bad way to determine what to eat. Pretty much all green vegetables are bursting with nutrients and vitamins which boost your health and bodily functions.

The pick of the greens must be the following 5 vegetables:

  • Celery
  • Watercress
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Kale

These 5 have such a large range of nutrients and vitamins between them that just eating them raw would give your health a huge boost, providing a body detox and dramatically lowering cholesterol.

3. Seeds

Three seeds in particular possess wonderful qualities

  • Sunflower seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds

A combination of these 3 types of seeds makes a surprisingly filling snack and takes the edge off hunger pangs.

They are helpful to intestinal health, cleansing the digestive system and preventing constipation, while pectin, the soluble fibre in sunflower seeds, is especially powerful as a detoxifier. Sunflower seeds strengthen the eyesight, sesame seeds strengthen the heart whilst pumpkin seeds help in wound healing.

Using Superfoods For Healthy And Natural Conception

How Much Superfoods Should We Eat

Using Superfoods For Healthy And Natural ConceptionDespite the fact that in most cases children come the natural way, there are a lot of couples who are looking for medical intervention to conceive a child. One of the most important factors to conceive children is that the hormones are well balanced in both, the male and female partner. In order to conceive and get pregnant your bodies have to be in good shape and all the necessary ingredients must be present. This doesn't mean that you should only eat superfoods from now on, quite the opposite; too much nutrients can also mess with the hormonal balance and influence the pregnancy process negatively.

To keep your hormones in balance and proportion it is important to practice a healthy and well balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, some exercise will do just fine. These two factors have a big influence in your hormone household as well as on the rest of your body Eating more whole foods in your meals betters your chances of acquiring the right nutrients for your body. Whole foods include fresh and best all organic vegetables and fruits, beans, seeds, nuts, eggs, fresh fish like blue fin tuna and wild caught salmon and many unrefined grains. It is important that you to eat whole superfoods with plenty of vitamins and minerals.

You need to constantly refill your vitamin B complex because these vitamins are swept out from your body with every time you go to the bathroom. The vitamins B6 and B12 are vital for hormonal functions and fertility, thus influence your chances of conceiving. Great sources of vitamin B6 are skinned baked potatoes, fortified cereals, fortified soy-based substitutes for meat. Very good sources of vitamin B's are bananas, spinach, turkey, white chicken meat and organic eggs. mussels, poultry, crabs, clams, wild salmon, and soybeans.

Folic acid or otherwise known as folate in association with vitamin B12, plays an important role in the production of genetic materials. Bear in mind that your body cannot naturally produce its own folic acids, so like the B complex vitamins, you need to refill this too. Folate-rich foods are those green and leafy vegetables, carrots, apricots, avocados, melons, egg yolks, yeasts, liver and whole grains. Folates are important in the baby's brain development as well.

Zinc is also an essential component of genetic materials. It likewise portrays an important role in men and women's fertility. Zinc is substantial for a healthy and normal cell division, making it crucial for conception. Foods like oats, pumpkin seeds, rye, peas and almonds are reliable sources of zinc.

Fish oils are famous sources of these Essential Fatty Acids. Essential Fatty Acids are needed for hormone production. Essential Fatty Acids can minimize and prevent blood clots and work well for women who had a miscarriage and blood clots before.

Vitamin A is a favorable antioxidant for the development of the embryo. Increase your level of this nutrient by adding more tomatoes, spinach, carrots and cabbages to your diet.

Vitamin C, is another antioxidant needed for sperm production and it plays a role in healthy ovulation. Vitamin C may be thought of as the universal vitamins for it is accountable for almost all healthy functions of the body. Excellent supply of vitamin C may be taken from amalaki fruits, raw red peppers, black currants, guavas, strawberries, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, kiwi fruits, and all citrus fruits such as lime, grapefruits, oranges and so on.

Another important nutrient is the vitamin E, which also is an antioxidant. Low levels of vitamin E cause sub-fertility in both men and women. Therefore you should start incorporating some superfoods into your meals, such as leafy green vegetables, wheat germ cereal, sunflower seeds, brown rice, organ meats, nuts, milk, organic eggs, sweet potatoes and soy beans.

Enough iron supply in the body is just as essential. Iron helps in red blood cells production and it also circulates oxygen through the body. Iron deficiency happens through menstrual periods, blood loss or childbirth. Once more, leafy greens are certified sources of iron along with red meat, shellfish, beans, soy products and poultry. The best source for iron is still spinach as we all know.

For all of you who are planning to get pregnant or are awaiting a child already, it is essential to ready your body with a variety of nutrients and minerals to provide you and your baby superior health throughout the whole process. I have to say it again; superfoods are not much more expensive than junk food, your health and your baby's health must be worth the slight difference.

Goji Berries – High Antioxidant Superfood

About Goji Berries

Goji Berries SuperfoodsGoji berries are in the western world better known as Wolf berries. Goji berries are considered to be one of the most nutrient rich berries on the planet. The Goji berry is a tiny red fruit about the same size as a blueberry. It tastes sour and sweet, with a slight tartness, and is like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. The fruit is nicknamed the "happy berry" because of the sense of well being it is said to induce.

Goji berries are grown predominantly in the Himalayan hills of northwest China and Tibet. They grow on vines and are dried and preserved in the sun. They have been eaten by Tibetan monks and used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

Nutrition of Goji Berries

Goji berries are nutritionally rich. They are packed full of: Antioxidants: they are the richest known source of beta-carotene of all foods (weight for weight they contain 500 times more beta-carotene than oranges!), vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamins B1, B2 and B6, 21 trace minerals, including zinc, calcium and selenium, 18 amino acids, omegas (essential fatty acids) and polysaccharides which fortify and support a healthy immune system.

Anti-oxidants work by "mopping up" unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are caused by pollutants such as cigarette smoke and chemicals in our food. They are highly active, unstable molecules and can damage the body's proteins, fats and DNA. There are many negative effects of free radicals including contributing towards heart disease and cancer as well as speeding up the aging process. Eating a healthy balanced diet and including nutrient rich superfoods like goji berries, reduces the damage done by free radicals.

Health Benefits of Goji Berries

Goji Berries have many health benefits. They are thought to: enhance libido / sex drive and boost energy and general well being, improve cellulite – , assist in weight loss and burn fat, slow ageing, fight cancer, fight heart disease, boost the immune system, improve hearing and eyesight, maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, enhance fertility and reduce morning sickness, build muscle, strengthen bones and tendons, strengthen and support healthy liver and kidney function and maintain a healthy nervous system.

Getting Additional Nutrition from Superfoods

What means nutrition from Superfoods?

Leafy Greens - Collards are Superfood

Superfoods are a class of foods that are considered to be better than other foods because they contain more nutritional elements and antioxidants. It is common sense that some foods are better than others, for example, an apple is more nutritious than a bag of potato chips, and broccoli is healthier than eating gummy bears. Fact is that there are highly loaded superfoods that can help us to live healthier and have a more vibrant live and they can even prolong or lifespan.

All Superfoods have a high concentration of important nutrients and they are typically low in calories and fat. Many of these nutrients have been proven to be helpful in the prevention of various diseases, and some are even able to reverse the effects of aging! Going on a diet that is rich in all the vital nutrients that is found in these superfoods can help prevent cardiovascular disease, certain Cancers, Type II Diabetes, Hypertension, Parkinson and Alzheimer's .

Most of these extremely nutritious superfoods also contain a great variety of antioxidants, phytonutrients, polyphenols, omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, and trace minerals. Superfoods are best eaten wholevas they come in nature with as little processing as possible. Superfoods are very complex and we don't know all of their benefits yet. Many superfoods contain hundreds of compounds and nutrients that have yet to be discovered.

Superfood researchers suggests that the nutrients from individual superfoods work best in combination with each other. This is the reason why it is best to be informed about as many healthy foods as possible rather than focus on just a few that you know already. Nutrients from a wide range of foods work together to promote good health and to prevent the problems like cancer and prematurely aging.

How are Superfoods measured?

Since a few year only we can measure antioxidants in different foods and the surprises don't stop coming. The ORAC scale, or the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, measures the antioxidant levels of a superfoods. ORAC is a measurement of how much antioxidants contained in the particular food were able to destroy oxygen free radicals in a test tube. The higher the ORAC number the higher the antioxidant capacity of the food. All antioxidant capacity measures are estimated by Ferric Reducing Power and are expressed as Micromole Trolox Equivalent µ(TE) per 100 grams or 3.53 ounces. The ORAC measurement is accurate up to ±5%.

There is a whole list of superfoods that score high on the ORAC scale but the fruit that scores by far the highest is the Acai berry, coming from the rain forests of Brazil. The purple little berries grow on palm trees and are loaded with antioxidants, polyphenols, essential fatty omega acids and the full range of amino acids essential to our health. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are needed for muscle building.

Other foods that are considered to be superfoods, include all of the berries, including raw cocoa, blueberries and cranberries, spinach and many other leafy greens, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, wild salmon, walnuts and other nuts green tea and dark chocolate.

Eating a healthy and balanced diet that includes the superior nutrition of the healthiest foods on earth is probably the very best way in the world to remain healthy and strong. If you're interested in Acai products have a look in our health store where you can find many superfood products and also many books about superfoods, written by people who have studied superfoods for many years already.

The New Top 10 Superfoods List

The New Top 10 Everyday Superfoods List

Purslane is rich on Omega 3 Fatty AcidsOften patients ask me what they should eat and what the best food for their nutrition is, I have to remind them of the fact that there is no one single superfood or even a healthy food group that works like a magic bullet for your health. Rather, eating a wide variety of foods, consisting mainly of organic fresh fruits and vegetables, is the most savvy way to practice a smart nutrition of the body. Lately new research in the field of nutrition shows that certain foods stand above the rest as sources of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. These are the foods we now like to call "Superfoods".

Not many people are aware of what really matters, when it comes to making healthy food choices. Common knowledge is that you can't go wrong with broccoli, spinach and oranges. And then? Many, for not to say most of the healthiest foods in the world are constantly overlooked. I have evaluated the latest research on nutrients to create an updated list of everyday superfoods that should be, in one way or the other, on your nutritional diet for most days of the week.

  1. Cinnamon – This absolutely must be the hottest stuff in town! With more than a quarter of a million ORAC antioxidant units per 100 gram it is very rich in antioxidants! Cinnamon has long been used for  cooking in Middle Eastern cuisines,. Cinnamon has proven to lower blood sugar levels, triglycerides and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels. Just a quarter teaspoon every second day sprinkled over coffee or cereal is beneficial. I am using it in tea as well.
  2. Goji Berries – These berries have been used as medicinal food for centuries in Tibet and in China. The sweet tasting Goji berries have more antioxidant power than most foods on the planet. Studies have shown that they also lowers insulin resistance, and therefore lowers the risk of diabetes. Eat these red and tasty berries as is or add them to cereal or yogurt or put a handful into the salad every day.
  3. Pomegranate Juice -A sticky red juice, loaded with Vitamin C. Only a small glass of this sweet-tart juice each day may decrease your systolic blood pressure by 21 percent over the course of a year!
  4. Cabbage – A Stanford University study showes that Cabbage helps to increase the production of cancer-fighting enzymes in our body. This happens thanks to a chemical called sulforaphane. Eat cabbage on sandwiches in place of lettuce for a satisfying crunch or make a tangy coleslaw using cider vinegar and yogurt instead of mayo. Fine cut cabbage and add it to any salad. Not only does it look good, it is also very beneficial for your digestion.
  5. Guava– Is a tropical fruit containing more lycopene, the very antioxidant that fights prostate cancer, than either tomatoes or watermelon. It is furthermore loaded with organic fiber and potassium. The best way to eat guava is fresh. The seeds and rind of the fruit are also edible.
  6. Beets – Naturally sweet, this often-overlooked vegetable is high in folate and betaine, which reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering homocysteine levels in the blood. You'll gain the greatest benefit by eating this colorful veggie raw. Just peel the skin and grate into salads, pasta and grain dishes. The leaves are edible too-saute them like spinach.
  7. Purslane – Is a very common green in the Chinese, the Mexican, Thai and the Greek kitchen, this little green leafs contain more heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids than any other plant know today. It also contains high levels of the cancer-fighting antioxidant melatonin. Find the crisp, lemony leaves at farmers' and ethnic markets and add them to your salads.
  8. Pumpkin Seeds – Just one ounce of roasted Pumkin seeds provide you 150 mg magnesium. Reaching the daily requirement of 420 mg of this vital nutrient has been shown to reduce the risk of death by 40 percent. Eating the whole seeds also provides a healthy dose of fiber.
  9. Swiss Chard – Lately a Harvard study has shown this leafy green protects the health of our eyes with abundant levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. These chemicals absorb shortwave light that would otherwise damage the retina. Saute a bunch of the mild leaves with garlic in extra virgin olive oil and serve alongside chicken or fish or fine cut them into your salads.
  10. Dried Prunes – This healthy super food fights cancer causing cell damage with an abundance of the antioxidants, neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid. Grab a few of these sweet dried fruits as a snack or gussy them up by stuffing them with goat cheese and serving as an appetizer but take care not to eat too many at once as this might have an unwanted cleansing effect of your digesting system….

I hope this list of everyday superfoods has reminded you of a few things you haven't eaten in a while and revealed new nutrition information and superfood stars for you to try. Remember, no one food can provide all the nutrition you need for your optimal health, only variety is the key to a successful disease-fighting diet. Add these new superfoods to your shopping list tomorrow, and your body and mind will both enjoy the benefits for many years to come!

Loose Weight with a Low Glycemic Diet

Weight Loss with Low Glycemic Diet

Weight Loss Strategies

It’s logic that no one in their right mind would make a conscious decision for being extra heavy, would you?. There are no real benefits for being fat. Being heavy carries so many impractical implications with it that it just can’t be all that much fun.

Chubbiness also restricts general movement of the body. Being flabby makes you feel lethargic, even lazy, but it can certainly encourage you to eat even more of the wrong foods that have got you there in the first place. Comparatively, many obese people do not believe they look as good as they could do and some even develop a dislike or maybe a hate for their own body. Tubbiness certainly doesn’t make you feel as good as you could feel, and some say it even dampens your sex life. But more importantly it increases your risk of ill health – and of that there’s no doubt. It is even believed to reduce your life span. There is an abundance of medical evidence to prove this is so, and the effects of obesity will now be so bad that some believe that a great many of our children of today can be the first generation never to outlive their parents. The truth is hard but simple – being flabby and obese encumbers our lives in so many ways…So why can we allow this to happen, why can we do that to ourselves?

So we now sit in the course of an corpulence epidemic and in reality, no one really wants to be or has chosen to get heavy or obese. And that is despite over 200 million websites of eating habits plans, diet regime pills and diet regime potions. And then there’s the authority suggestion, the medical advice, the recommendation of nutritionists and untold food intake companies – all unusually wanting to take your custom. So what isn’t working? We only have to take in the moment and pause…look around us to see that something is obviously very very wrong. And do the government want it for being so? I don’t believe so, as heaviness costs our nation billions of dollars a year. It is perhaps more the case that they are not really sure of how to tackle this self inflicted epidemic, which is second only to smoking in the stakes of measurable loss of life.

So why? Why do we intentionally inflict this self induced ‘illness’ upon ourselves? Incredibly, despite the fact we know which foods we must always eat, we know which foods are good for us and we know which are the ‘badies’. But despite all this, we still eat too much and too much of the wrong stuff. We still self inflict the misery of obesity upon ourselves.

If a close friend appeared for being alarmed and severe in telling you that the food you were almost to eat, contained the deadly poison arsenic in it, your natural reaction that i see to stop ‘dead in your tracks’ or at the least hesitate to confirm. Are they kidding? Do they mean it? And that could be our dilemma in a nut shell. We don’t experience an immediate or real threat to our lives when we are eating what is deemed to get food that is certainly ‘bad’ for us. Some processed foods, most fast foods and all junk foods. we are accustomed to eating it and our ‘egos’ accepts it and therefore there is no threat to our instinctive survival mechanisms. Our primeval instinct to survive does not ‘see’ eating as a threat to life itself. we are natural eating ‘machines’. And so if our ‘egos’ accepts it – we do.

Is there an option to do nothing as an individual? Can we allow to wait for the miracle ‘diet regime drug’ to stem our appetite? Only you can decide. But would you want to be on ‘diet drugs’ for the rest of your life – day in day out drug dependent just for the sake of…eating? Experts say most would not and it almost sounds ludicrous to even consider the option. There is another method…and that could be to go back to basics.

We have existed on this planet for well over 2,000,000 years and for 99.5 percent of the time we survived well as the hunter and gatherer, and proudly became head of the food chain. No, I’m not suggesting in any shape or form that we must go back to living a ‘cave man’ life style, (even though it would probably be healthier!), but I am suggesting we must learn from our genetic inheritance. It is suggested that 99% of our nutritional genes have remained unchanged over that humongous period of time, and yet our diet in the last 50 years has changed beyond all recognition. Totally.

Who are we, apart from just mere mortals to ever think we are able to dictate to ‘Mother Nature’ in providing today’s diet regime, when man’s body has changed and mutated over million years of evolution to accept what is now thought being a much narrower range of ‘acceptable foods’. Our body is doing and saying what it has always done over hundreds and thousands of generations before us, and yet we elect not to listen. We choose to ignore the signs and believe “I’ll be alright”. Our ancestors left us a heritage of which we must be proud – but sadly we are failing to leave anything like as comparable.

For now, obesity still remains a matter of choice…but choice means a decision.

Every Day Superfoods

10 Every Day Superfoods that you can get everywhere!

Cinnamon Canelle - Antioxidant rich superfood

Picture: Luc-Viatour

When we’re talking about Superfoods, we’re not talking about some wonder drugs in a golden pill box, no, we’re talking about organic every day foods that are pure and unprocessed, containing a broad variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Superfoods are nutritional power houses with a high phytochemical and phytonutrient content. Phytonutrient are known to have disease fighting properties. Phytochemicals and Phytonutrients strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol level, diabetes and even cancer.

But first of all; What are Phytonutrients & Phytochemicals?
Phytochemicals are chemicals in vegetables and fruits, other than vitamins and minerals and macronutrients, which are incredibly important for our health. The term “phyto” comes from the Greek word meaning plant. There are literally thousands of them and they have many different functions in our body. They can be antioxidants and fight free radicals or they boost the immune system, they can be anti-viral or anti-bacterial, many of them are anti-inflammatory and help repairing damaged cells. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables tend to have high concentrations of Phytochemicals and the highest concentrations are usually found in the skin of the plant. Examples of phytonutrients you may have heard about are anthocyanins in berries, lycopene in tomatoes and carotenoids in carrots.

What we eat has an incredible impact on our body and our mind and even our lives as such! What we eat affects how we feel, if we are moody or feel great, if we have energy to waste or if we need a nap in the afternoon already. If we follow a healthy diet, it can help guard against all so many diseases. Eating a wide variety of fresh and organic vegetables and include as many superfoods as possible in our daily meals helps to ensure that we give our bodies the best possible treatment

Here is my every day superfoods list

Find below a list of common, easily obtained superfoods that we can find in our stores for most of the year.

  1. Cinnamon: This superfood is just the top of the pop. It contains an unbelievable high antioxidant level of 267,000 ORAC units which brings it on the third place of the antioxidants list. Cinnamon is great at stabilizing blood sugar levels. Cinnamon has been reported to have a pharmacological effects in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance, the latest research also documents anti-melanoma activity of cinnamic aldehyde observed in cell culture and a mouse model of human melanoma. Cinnamon can be used for backing, cooking and for tea.
  2. Almonds: Our next every day superfood is a great source of calcium. Almonds contain four times more calcium than diary milk, They contain magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and vitamin E and are high in protein and fiber. Almonds also contain omega 3s and monounsaturated fatty acids which again help to prevent heart disease. Almonds taste good in almost everything. You can use them in your breakfast cereal, use them in cookies, use almond butter instead of diary butter or simply eat them raw to get the most out of this superfood.
  3. Sumac The next on our list of superfoods is Sumec; honestly, it has been a few days only, since I first heard of Sumac but I’m already a fan. Sumac grows as shrubs or small trees with loads of red berries, they can reach a height of 1 to 10 meters! Sumac was primarily used in Islamic countries as a treatment for many different ailments in medieval medicine and the native Americans used Sumac leaves and drupes of the combined with tobacco, in traditional smoking mixtures. The sumac fruits or drupes, are ground into a deep red or purple powder used to add a lemony taste to the Middle Eastern cuisine’s meat or salads. Sumac is the second richest food on antioxidants, known today. Sumac bran contains 312,400! ORAC units per 100 gram bran. Compare that to our oh so healthy Oranges that contain 700 ORAC units per 100gram. That’s an enormously high amount of antioxidants and can only be beaten by our next superfood!
  4. ClovesWell, nobody in his right mind would want to eat 100gram cloves in a day, but if you would, you would have ingested 314,446 antioxidant units. Cloves are great in many cooked dishes and also in meat, for oven baked foods and for toothache. Cloves are used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine and in the Chinese medicine where it is used for severe burns, skin irritations and to reduce the sensitiveness of skin and it has antiseptic properties.
  5. Apples: Apples are an amazing superfood that everybody loves. Apples contain 18 of the 20 amino acids our body needs. Unpealed apples contain quecitin which is a phytonutrient that helps prevent damage to LDL cholesterol (that’s the good cholesterol), keeping the arteries clean and healthy and therefore lowering the risk of a heart disease. Apples also contain pectin which is a soluble fiber which helps so lower the bad HDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Pectin also binds with heavy metals such as lead in the body and removes them from the gut.
  6. Avocados: Avocados are an extremely nutritious superfood. Avocados are high in healthy mono-unsaturated fat, fiber, Vitamin E, potassium and folic acid (folate). They are the best fruit source of beta-sitosterol which is a substance that can reduce total cholesterol as well as being high in lutein which is known to protect against cataracts, keeping the cardiovascular system healthy and preventing prostrate cancer.
  7. Beans: Any kind of beans are incredible superfoods, high in antioxidants and a great source of soluble fiber which traps bile that contains cholesterol in the digestive tract and removes it from the body before it is absorbed. Beans are high in protein and very low in fat and can help lower cholesterol. Beans help to keep blood sugar levels stable which is beneficial to those with diabetes. Beans also reduce the risk of cancer – especially breast cancer. According to a study in the International Journal of Cancer (2005;114:628–33), Women who eat frequently beans and lentils have a significantly lower risk to get breast cancer than women who seldom eat them. Beans contain calcium, potassium, vitamin B6, magnesium and folic acid (folate).
  8. Blueberries: They’re jus great fruits! Blueberries contain incredibly high amounts of antioxidants (6550 ORAC/100g) including the flavonoid anthocyanins which combats the effects of toxins and pollution and are thought to have anti-aging properties. Blueberries also contain ellegic acid which is a phytonutrient thought to prevent abnormal cellular changes. They are also anti-inflammatory, reduce allergic reactions and keep capillaries healthy which is great if you bruise easily or have varicose veins. Blueberries further help strengthen your immune system and they are a great source of vitamin C and extra fiber.
  9. Broccoli: A great vegetable! And at least something Clinton was right in! Broccoli contains more vitamin C than oranges and is high in potassium and beta-carotene which again helps to reduce the risk of heart disease. What is Wheatgrass good for?

The many benefits of Wheatgrass

Growing Wheatgrass at HomeWheatgrass juice. Every juice shop and many health food stores sell little cups of the dark green liquid that smells, and tastes, like freshly cut Summer grass clippings. Wheatgrass juice has become popular with the “soy and yogurt” set, but most people will turn their noses at the pungent smell of this concoction and stick to their coffees and sweetened teas.

They don’t know what they’re missing, because once you get past the taste, wheatgrass juice packs quite a concentrated nutritional and medicinal punch.

Wheatgrass is one of the many green plants that are grown through the process of sprouting. Sprouts are “total foods” because they contain a full range of essential dietary nutrients in combination with the enzymes that are necessary to ingest and absorb them. Humans are unable to snack on wheatgrass in it’s plant form, as the cellulose makeup makes it too fibrous for our digestive system.

In juice or powder form, however, wheatgrass breaks down through digestion very rapidly and almost immediately hit the bloodstream. The full menu of nutrients provided by wheatgrass juice is assimilated by the human body in twenty minutes or less, making it also an extremely effective source of quick energy.

Wheatgrass is nothing you have to go and buy in a store for a high price like other health food supplements, you can smply grow it at home in your own kitchen, and here is how:

Wheatgrass provides a great variety of benefits such as:

Energy Provider

Two ounces of fresh wheatgrass juice supplies the vitamin and mineral content of three pounds of organic vegetables. The same two ounces also provides a healthy energy boost equal to two cups of coffee, without the caffeine.

As a Complete Food Source

Wheatgrass is a nutritious source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, sodium, cobalt, and zinc. It is a complete meal with high levels of protein made up of thirty enzymes and is approximately 70% raw chlorophyll, an important component in muscle growth and the development of new blood cells.

For Body Cleansing and Detoxification

Wheatgrass contains many detergent capabilities and will work to drain the lymph system, carrying away many of the toxins found in cells and tissue. Muscles, tendons, and joints, sore from exertion or degenerative issues, will develop a buildup of mucous in the lymph area of the pain or injury. Wheatgrass will breakdown the mucous and allow it to drain. Wheatgrass is a powerful detoxification agent and will immediately react with toxins and mucous in the stomach before being absorbed into the blood, where it will wash away toxins stored throughout cells and fatty tissues.

Weight Loss

Wheatgrass has only approximately 10-15 calories per teaspoon and contains no fat, cholesterol, or refined sugars. It supplies close to a gram of protein per teaspoon and includes all eight of the essential amino acids, as well as thirteen of the remaining sixteen types. Due to it’s dense nutritional makeup and inherent quick energy producing capabilities, wheatgrass acts both as an appetite suppressant and a boost to the body’s systems. It is especially popular with athletes as the juice is absorbed into the bloodstream within twenty minutes of ingestion.

Preventing and Fighting Cancer

Wheatgrass contains high levels of beta-carotene which can contribute to lowering risks of certain types of cancer. For example, experiments have shown that high levels of beta-carotene can negate the accumulated effects of smoking, leading to a 40% reduction in the chances of developing lung cancer.

Okay, so wheatgrass juice isn’t the tastiest beverage around. It more than makes up for this by providing a two ounce shot of super charged nutritional and medicinal benefits. If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, then look into supplementing your diet with the superfood wheat-grass.

Spirulina – The Blue Green Wonder

What is Spirulina

Spirulina is the most powerful known blue-green algae. Spirulina is a simple, one celled form of an algae thriving in warm, alkaline freshwater bodies. The name "Spirulina" itself comes from the Latin word for "helix" that stands for spiral; describing the physical configuration of the organism when it forms swirling, microscopic strands. Spirulina powder is about to become the number one superfood across the globe. Spirulina has been developed as the "Food of the Future" because of its amazing ability to synthesize high quality concentrated food more efficiently than other blue green algae. Most notably, Spirulina consists of about 70% complete protein and it also contains all essential amino acids in an almost perfect balance. Beef for example only contains about 22% of protein. So Spirulina is a natural health supplement containing far more protein than any other food known today. Spirulina is higher by volume than any other natural food and almost all nutritional supplements on the market.

This blue green algae is probably also the most exhaustively researched food micro algae ever. Spirulina has many uses and is oftentimes used by people in their own self care program for weight loss and cancer prevention as it offers more nutritional improvement for weight control and purifying blood. Spirulina is dried and pulverized to powder. For centuries it has been used as an abundant source of nutrients and has been proven to possess a vast array of medical uses, including its use as an antiviral, weight loss aid, antioxidants provider, and lipid reduction agent. Spirulina is meanwhile available everywhere around the globe. It is mostly used as an additional dietary supplement but also as whole food. It is usually obtainable in different forms which consist of powder, tablets, or flakes. I personally use a spoonful of Spirulina inmy morning shake after my workout session. That's when the body needs the energy of Spirulina most.

Spirulina also contains a high volume of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Other beneficial nutrients are GLA fatty acid, essential fatty acids, lipids, nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), vitamin C, Vitamin E and B complex. It contains phytochemicals like phycocyanin, chlorophyll and carotenoids. But we're not done yet; Spirulina is also a quality source of potassium and it contains large measures of iron, phosphorus, calcium, chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, selenium, sodium and zinc! The protein in Spirulina is unlike other forms of protein as the protein contained is a gigantic 85-95% viable parts, which means its one of the two largest obtainable forms of protein for the body, in existence and only dried egg supplements contain more usable protein than spirulina powder.

Spirulina powder uses Sun energy and converts it into a massive supply of vitamins, minerals and proteins. Spirulina should be used by your whole family. It is perfectly safe for children and it has shown to supercharge vitality levels and increase stamina while strengthening the immune system. This greatly improves skin tone and nail and hair growth whilst providing a large quantity of nutrition with nearly no calories at all. Long before it became a supplement industry favorite, Spirulina was already used regularly by indigenous peoples all over the planet. For more than 40 years now, Spirulina has been researched for its amazing nutritional properties. Research has long proven thje effectiveness of Spirulina and people are starting to realize the power of Spirulina and recognize it as the remarkably superior food with monumental potential as a medicinal drug, that it is. Spirulina powder is often combined with fruit and vegetable juices or shakes and can also be added to food dishes to spike the nutritional content.
