Hemp Milk – Healthy Alternative to Soy Milk or Dairy

A Healthy Alternative to Dairy Or Soy Milk

Shelled hemp seeds ready to make Hemp milkMany people have tried soy milk or almond milk in their exploration to find alternatives to cow milk. and lately we hear of the amazing power of hemp foods, and the power of hemp nutrition to meet an incredibly wide variety of human health needs.

The seed of the hemp plant is currently illegal to grow in most countries in the world, even though there is no THC in the seeds of the plant. THC is the active compound in marijuana that makes people “stoned”. It is legal, however, to import the seed from Canada and other countries where it legal to grow hemp plants for agriculture, so that we can use this amazing food in our everyday diets.

I’m a big fan of hemp seeds myself, since they are very high on protein, and they have an almost ideal ratio of essential fatty acids for humans, including the elusive “omega 3s” that most people in the western cultures are sorely lacking.

Common Hemp seeds contain more than 23 minerals and trace elements, including powerful blood sugar stabilizing minerals such as chromium.

In his book Fats that Heal, Fats the Kill, Udo Erasmus claims:

Hemp seed is the Number 1 food meant for human consumption. It’s THAT nutritious, and that complete!

You can blend hemp seeds with water, a little Himalaya salt, and/or some sweetener like stevia or honey, and you will have a most fantastic tasting hemp milk. Alternatively, Hemp Seeds can be eaten raw with a spoon, or mixed into a highly-nutritious oak meals and Muesli.

The hulled seed is also very soft, so there is no need for any special processing prior to eating. You can sprinkle hemp seeds on your green salad, or onto your fruit salad (they easily go both ways).

It is well known amongst Raw Foodists that eating too many nuts or seeds can be rather unbalancing, and they often therefore “soak” them for 4-12 hours prior to eating, to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors. Nevertheless, Hemp seeds do not need to be soaked in any way to be completely edible and digestible.

You can find Hemp seeds in many health food stores. I mostly blend the seeds into hemp seed milk smoothies, mixed with raw cacao powder, and some of the various green superfood powders on the market today.

To be more economical, search for the 5 pound bags available from many places online. Store the seeds in the freezer, and they will last for many months.

Some additional blending addition suggestions for making delicious hemp shakes:

  • Add a fresh coconut including the juice and the white coconut meat
  • Add fresh or frozen fruit, such as peaches, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, etc.
  • Add 5-20 raw organic cacao beans or “cacao nibs” for a chocolaty nutritious treat
  • Add 1-3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder to make a non-dairy chocolate milk. This increases the protein content of the already-high hemp milk, since for every 2 tablespoons of raw cacao powder you use, you get 6 additional grams of raw protein.

Rejuvenation with Amalaki

What Doesn’t the Amalaki Fruit Do?

Amalaki Fruit of IndiaThe fruit we want to talk about today is only the size of a golf ball but it is said to have healing powers. I am talking about the incredible fruit from the bottom of the famous Himalayan Mountains known as Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis). The Amalaki fruit has been used for it’s rejuvenating affects on the body and, its augmented immune functions as well as its capacity to revitalize the human body as such for many centuries. Although, in the history books of scientific studies, exists no other fruit which possesses such incredible features as the Amalaki fruit of India. So wonderful is this fruit it is recurrently mentioned within the pages of Ayurveda. The Amalaki fruit has always been part of the Ayurvedic medicine since the times of ancient India. The alternative medicine of Ayurveda focuses on three main healing areas of the body to achieve total health:

  1. The prevention of disease.
  2. The healing of existing illness.
  3. and the promotion of body longevity and rejuvenation through eating habits!

To demonstrate just how essential this fruit is considered just take a look at some of its pseudonyms found around the world. Amalaki has been described as the great re-juvenator, as the nurse, and as the fruit of immortality. As if the names alone are not enough to consign this fruit on the list of most important healthy superfoods, the original Amalaki or Indian gooseberry has been endowed with its own special holiday. Up until today, many families in India gather under the Amalaki tree and consume their meals while expressing their gratefulness towards this healing fruit.

The fruit’s anti-aging ability and it’s ability to enhance health and restore radiance and vitality has progressively brought it to become one of the most rejuvenating superfoods today. Amalaki is not only merely renowned for its youthful rejuvenating effects but also its anti inflammatory benefits. It readily promotes healthier hair and skin. Its authenticity as a health benefactor has been commended by modern science. Amalaki occupies a central position within the scientific community with their attempts to investigate its amazing talent in combating cancer, its unique knack of improving eyesight as well as reducing wrinkles.

After reviewing all the special traits associated with the Amalaki fruit, you have to wonder if it is truly possible that a single fruit can possess such unique abilities towards promoting a healthier body and mind. Scientists are rapidly discovering more and more facts pertaining to this amazing fruit. They know today that the chemical synopsis of the fruit readily exhibits antioxidants faculties as well as bioflavonoid and polyphenols availability. Most important of its many contents is the trace minerals, the amino acids and its phenolic combination involving gallic acid and ellagic acid. It fully reduces oxidative stress as well as the immune damaging components and free radicals.

Beside all these important aspects of the Amalaki fruit it is perhaps the richest source of Vitamin C found in nature. Amalaki is possibly the best natural way to a new youthful life. That said, don’t forget that eating fresh fruits in general improves your health and if you cannot get Amalaki fruits today, eat something else but look out for them on your next tour through the fruit market.

A Word About Evolution

What is Evolution and where does it get us?

Charles Darwin - 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882According to Charles Darwin, evolution is what supposedly brought us down from the trees and from the cave man to the computer geek. That's a long way, although only during the past 100 years we really made progress, with one extraordinary exception that is, and that was Greece. Right, the Greeks had warm and cold water in their private bathrooms 3000 years ago, while the rest of the world still peed on trees and bathed in the river. Anyway, that's another story. Evolution hasn't stopped in the last 11 million years and we can therefore relay on the fact that it won't stop tomorrow or the day after. The reason for that is that we are not done yet! A 100 000 years ago, the cave man thought that evolution probably had finished here, if he ever knew what evolution is, and he would have torn he's wife on her hair into the cave, thought her what he likes and what not, and that was evolution for him. But he actually had a good point of view, because he was looking at the monkeys in the trees. He was looking at how they behaved and he was laughing and thinking to himself how evolved he was, compared to those monkeys. Today we're looking at the same monkeys and we're thinking the same things, how is that for evolution?

The point is that during the past we evolved towards an unknown destination. Nobody can say or know what "the big plan" behind all that is, but we can relay on the fact that it isn't over yet. Even though many seem to believe that in December 2012 the end of the world will come, I'm already writing "Happy 2013" cards for my friends. We are not finished human beings and we have to evolve further, there is no way around that. I hear many voices talking about how old people will get who are today 20 years old. Most people I know estimate that today's young people will become about a 100 – 120 years old in average. I would top it with 150+ if the food they eat gets healthy and they take food supplements on daily bases.

If you think this is impossible, think back a bit, 300 years ago the average age of a human being was around 40 years, the people living then would never have believed that humans can get older than 100 years and yet; look at us today!

Master Hsu Yun died 120 years old in 1959In many remote regions of the world people become 100 years old and are still active members of the community. I know of a doctor who makes house visits in the countryside in China, the man is 103 years old! The regions where people get so old are interesting for scientists who study the anti aging process in these people. And that is more or less the way that superfoods got discovered. In some higher regions of China and in the Himalaya are many such villages where people get very old more or less without or with very little help of western medicine and pharmaceutics. In these region we find Goji Berries. You must have heard about those anti aging berries. Goji Berries are loaded with antioxidants, they contain 25 300 ORAC per 100 gram. (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) That's a lot. Antioxidants are fighting the free radicals in our bodies. The free radicals are what makes us age and makes us wrinkle. So the best known anti aging drugs today are antioxidants.

But with Goji Berries, better known to the western world as "Wolfberries"* having around 25 000 ORAC, there are even better foods out there carrying even more of those anti aging angels. look at the Acai berry for example. Acai contains 4 times more antioxidants than Goji, 102 700 ORAC (determined from both hydrophilic and lipophilic sources, was 102,700 units per 100 g)! Raw Cacao is also amongst the top runners with a stunning 81 000 ORAC.

Goji Berries Wolfberries Dutch processed cacao powder is not bad either and much tastier to consume; it still contains more than 40 000 units per 100g chocolate. During the past few years only, have all these superfoods been discovered. It took thousands of years and we had to invent and develop all kinds of technology and techniques including the internet for communication and a new measuring scale called ORAC, to be able to just begin to understand what superfoods are and what they are capable of doing to our body AND our minds. We just begin to understand what we are supposed to eat to become 100 years old and even older. But we slowly do understand and this is where evolution leads us! This is what it is all about; at least for now, for our generation. Keep on reading here and elsewhere about superfoods. Gather all the information you can get about these miracle fruits and berries and spices. Learn, Stay Healthy and Evolve!

* The name Wolfberry doesn't have anything to do with the nutritionist David Wolfe, the nutritionist; it's more like a funny coincidence.
