You need a Microscope to see MicronutrientsMicronutrients are nutrients required by humans throughout life in small quantities to orchestrate a whole range of physiological functions, but which the human body itself cannot produce and this is where superfoods come in. There is a great variety of different "superfoods" which provide essential vitamins, antioxidants, energy enhancers, macro minerals, lipotropic factors, and other key nutrients which have been known to help minimize free radical formation that speeds up the aging process and supports optimal heart, brain and immune functioning.

Blueberries, for instance, are rated as a superfood because they are very dense in the antioxidants called anthocyannins, which are also present in blackberries.

Berries in general are among the foods which are the most antioxidant-dense. Cranberries, Strawberries, Bilberries, Cherries and Raspberries have a particularly high ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) Value.

Spirulina is a considered a superfood because it is a"live" food which is extremely protein dense. Many of the nutrients in superfoods simply are not found in everyday foods. Lutein, for example is found in leafy green vegetables such as Popeye's favorite superfood, Spinach. Among other benefits, Lutein acts as an antioxidant in the eye protecting cells from harmful free radicals. Our bodies do not produce lutein, it must be consumed in our food.
Grapes are another major superfood. Grape Seed Extract in particular is well known for its proanthocyanadins and actually contains more antioxidant power than vitamins E, C or Beta Carotene.

It is a tremendous free radical fighter which is noted for cardiovascular health, brain health and even mental alertness. That is why it is found in many of the better supplements out there. Oh yeah, grapes and grape juice by themselves are pretty good for you as well.

Green Tea and Green Tea extract qualifies as a bona fide superfood.

There are 4 principle polyphenols in green tea which are sometimes referred to as catechins. These super-antioxidants have been shown in various research studies to support the immune system, support healthy aging as well as to have a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular health. It is considered by some researchers to aid in fat usage rather than deposition. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is another key antioxidant found in green tea. It is at least one hundred more times more effective than vitamin C and some twenty-five times more effective than vitamin E at protecting cells and DNA!

Pineapple and Papaya qualify because they feature proteolytic enzymes that are needed for the restoration of old cells and the building of new ones.
They also have a systemic cellular anti-inflammatory action and they are noted for their helpful effects on joints, blood clotting as well as on the respiratory system. They offer superb support for the immune system.
Other foods which could be called superfoods or at least close to it are Wild Salmon (fish oil is extremely rich in the crucial omega-3 fatty acids epa and dha), Black beans (high in protein and antioxidants) and Watermelon (this fruit has the most antioxidants of any)

However, though once a fundamental component in everyone’s diet they lost their popularity after the birth of the Industrial Age which introduced processed food. Today, live superfoods are making a comeback. We are once again understanding their importance in everyday eating. Moreover, the health benefits of superfoods are second to none. Not even conventional medicine can match superfoods in effectiveness.

What are live superfoods? Live superfoods are those unprocessed foods high in phytonutrient content. These foods are antidioxidant rich, provide the human body with longevity, high energy, and low risk of illness and disease. You can consume live superfoods in a variety of ways. Nature provided us with everything we need in order for our bodies to remain healthy. Superfoods are very rich in nutrients and here are ten reasons to include them in your diet:

  1. With the modern day food industry refining natural foods to such an extent that they have the nutrients refined out them, very many people have diets far removed from what nature intended and are therefore deplete in essential nutrients.
  2. Superfoods can be less expensive than refined ready made and packaged foods to be found in the supermarkets. So called superfoods do not have to be the exotic and/or more expensive fruit and vegetables, which may have been imported from afar, that appear on many lists. They may be foods found closer to home such as peppers of all colors, sprouts, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli.
  3. Superfoods are colorful, tasty and full of texture and are therefore more satisfying. Part of the feeling of ‘having had enough’ or satiated is due to the experience of the actual eating itself and of the different textures and colors of the food. People are likely to eat less of the highly calorific and refined foods and therefore less likely to put on weight.
  4. Many superfoods produce an alkaline ash in the body which is much healthier for the individual. The body needs to maintain a slightly alkaline pH in order to stay healthy. A more acidic body is prone to inflammation, degenerative diseases, loss of skeletal calcium and gaining weight.
  5. Including superfoods in a balanced and varied diet may enable you to actually lose weight. Superfoods are ‘nutrient dense’ and it has been shown that people who consume the most nutrient dense diets may lose weight the easiest. This is likely to be because in this case, people are not eating so many highly calorific foods which are also relatively empty in nutrients.
  6. Eating superfoods is likely to bring back a balanced way of eating, reducing cravings and bingeing on refined, sugary foods. This will stabilize the blood glucose levels and reduce the possibility of adult onset diabetes.
  7. The majority of superfoods are low in fat and therefore calories, and so help with calorie controlled eating and weight loss.
  8. Also they generally have quite a high fiber content and as well has helping with weight loss they help the digestive system to function well and speed up transit time of the alimentary canal contents
  9. Superfoods combine phytonutrients – vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and adaptogens vital for health. Eg. they may reduce the risk of cancer, lower blood pressure and even improve eyesight.
  10. Superfoods boost your immune system and help you to fight off infections and diseases.

Superfoods have been around for decades. Only in the last few years have they gone really main stream. Products have been based around them and many diet authorities have been singing praises of Superfoods. They can make you healthier, give you more energy, and help you resist disease and more.

Most people eat food because they want to enjoy the taste and not because they want to get the right nutrition. The unfortunate truth is that most foods that taste good and that we like to eat, do not have many healthy benefits to them. If cheese burgers helped you lose weight and boost your immune system, our country would be among the healthiest in the world. Unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way.

There are a few reasons people do not eat the healthiest foods. One reason is that it usually doesn’t taste as good as unhealthy foods but mostly it’s because they just haven’t had the proper education about the health benefits that come with eating nutritional foods such as Superfoods.
