Eat Plants For Healthier Lifestyle

Vegetables, Leafy Greens and Lots of Fresh Fruits

The 200 Best Superfoods - A Must Read Book!I had a fine weekend last month, while I was taking my 2 daughters to Borders, I got some books for them and on my way to the cashier, I saw this book. It caught my attention by its title: The 200 Superfoods That Will Save Your Life, by Deborah A. Klein, M.S., RD. Just out of curiosity for wanting to know what are the Superfoods in the book, I bought it and took it home, one of the reasons beiing that I have 2 kids who don't like much to eat fruits and vegetables, desperate to find out more about nutritious food.

I opened the book and went through the list of the 200 superfoods listed in the contents menu. Interesting enough, 95% of the food listed in this book is all plants. Asked yourself, how many percent of plants you consumed in your daily diets? I guess your answer would probably is less than 5%…

Everybody wants to live healthier; but how many of us are doing something about it? One of my very close friends, who is a vegan, he told me that the root of most diseases come from eating meat. Whether you choose to believe it or not, it is already a fact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated in its report, The State of Aging and Health in America 2007, poor nutrition from daily diets is one of the major factors that causes of more than third of all deaths in the US. The CDC also found out that people who were 65 years of age or older were more likely than any other group to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Ask yourself another question, when you go to a restaurant or cook for your family; how often you select the food because of its nutrition, and how often you select because of its taste?

Let me make some bold statements:

  • Food is supposed to give us strength.
  • Food is supposed to give us energy.
  • Food is supposed to give us some healing properties.

Unfortunately, most of the food we have nowadays is all processed food, or industrialized food. They all taste very nice. But, our body doesn't need delicious food, what our body need is the nutrition from the right food!

There are tons of books, articles and researches you can find in the Internet about the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. But yet, not many people sense the danger of their bad habit of daily diets. Just wish that you whom put your effort to finish reading this article would try to eat more plants and less meat from now.

Are You Eating The Right Foods?

We are Eating the wrong Foods!

Cheeseburger Unhealthy Food Kills UsAbout a half million people die from food containing 'toxic' nutrients every year. More than 100 million Americans are still at risk and it cost the nation over $100 billion dollars a year. And yet on a daily basis no one seems to butt an eyelid, despite it still being a serious major problem – an epidemic in fact. Obesity, and of the self inflicted causes of disease it is second only to smoking. Left to current trends it is soon to take the number one slot. And yet, if the same magnitude and loss of life was attributed to Mad Cows Disease in our food chain, there would be a public outcry.

I mean, how can we have more than 100 million web pages of information about superfoods, nutrients, diet plans, pills and potions on the Internet and yet be in the middle of an obesity crisis? The only conclusion I can think of is that diets don't work. And yet people are still paying for it in one of 2 ways; with their money or with their health. Diet companies are quite happy to take a dieter's money but are dependent on a dieter's failure for their very own survival. Some even say diets are designed to fail. And now, there is insurmountable evidence that many appalling diseases are related to inappropriate nutrition and obesity, and yet 60% of Americans take little notice of it.

Why? It is because the act of eating presents no emotion of fear or threat to life and we are in fact genetically programmed to simple eat! We are biological 'eating machines'. So who is responsible? The food manufacturers, the government or us – the individual. In simple terms we all have choices as to what we decide to put inside our own body in the form of food, and therefore the ultimate responsibly lies with the individual in respect to their chosen diet. Obesity is having a massive impact on the western world at large with all the causes well documented but little in terms of real, solid and lasting solutions.

As a research specialists, we have severe concerns regarding the current obesity trends and have developed methodologies the help combat the problem for individuals based on 'our' nutritional inheritance. We have been on this planet for more than two million years and for 99.5% of this time as hunter and gatherer, consuming a diet of predominantly consisting of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and with plenty of water as the main source of liquid refreshment.

Our nutritional inheritance was and is still is well defined, and perhaps has less tolerance to variation than originally thought. You cannot so drastically change the human diet as we have today and not expect a reaction from Mother Nature herself. It is, and it always will be the survival of the healthiest and the fittest. And the fittest are those who can adapt to their environment. We also have to face the facts of the three key revolutions we have encountered during the past century – the Agricultural, the Industrial and Technological revolution, which all have significantly contributed to our demise. We no longer work for our food and we are far from being scared about not having anything to eat. Today we work less and therefore need less, but as a people we are eating more than necessary .

If we want to solve this problem. we must go back to the basics and change our nutrition towards a diet that is aligned to the nutritional needs and expectation of our body derived over millions of years of evolution. We need to take action to be able to change to a nutrition and a lifestyle that our body was originally designed for. This can be the only natural solution for a good diet and healthy foods except you want to wait until we are able to engineer nutritional genes to control appetite, and who knows what else… or we accept a lifetime of consuming superfoods to achieve the same aim.

These natural concepts have been detailed in many publications about Superfoods, allowing everyone to review their attitude and thought process about their own diet and nutrition to that of their inheritance. Everybody is responsible by themselves for what they eat and how healthy they want to live. The Secrets Of Nutrition and Healthy Foods

About Nutrition and why you need to Eat Healthy Foods

Artichokes Pistachios Quinoa Yummie! Superfoods DinnerMore and more people understand that diseases and even depression can be prevented and healed with natural ways rather than chemicals. During the past century we developed a quick fix option for most of our common diseases. We've been spending billions on pharmaceutical medicines, for the purpose of suppressing the symptoms but not healing the root cause of the problems!

Lately many of us are also realizing that we have been fooled all along! And that there are many natural alternatives to prevent illness and disease rather than treat it. And we find that mother nature has given us the most wonderful medicine already; natural foods, packed with antioxidants and all kinds of nutrients, all designed to nourish our bodies, to keep us healthy and to give us strenght to work at an optimum level; and all that is necessary for evolution to work. Natural grown, whole grain and organic foods and their nutritional elements are also used as medicine.

You can discover the healing secrets of food all by yourself, take the responsibility of your own health into your own hands. Doctors give you medicine and cut things out to solve the problem, a naturopathic Nutritionists follow another principle. They treat patients as one whole element of body, mind and soul. If you look at it that way you get a much broader view of deficiencies that may be causing the illness. Treatments are specific to each individual, making sure you take a balanced combination of nutrients and minerals. Such treatments are always tailored specifically to your individual needs, to get your body back to full strength and make or keep you healthy.

Why are Whole Foods so Important.

Some whole foods that contain a high range of important nutrients are often called superfoods e.g wheatgrass, sprouts, spirulina, and more. All whole foods are a mixture of vital nutrients and other minerals, so while a food may be rich in one particular nutrients it may also contain other valuable nutrients and health-giving factors in lesser doses. Finding healthy foods that even taste good and give you the best nutrition are a big part of the fun of eating well, no matter if you live alone, or with your family.

What makes a Healthy Diet?

The answer can be given in one single sentence:

Nutrition determines how we look, how we feel, how we work, if we will be nervous, tired, pessimistic, joyful, comfortable and happily active, whether we will age prematurely or enjoy our lives to the full.

Try these steps to improve the nutritional content of your food:

Eat healthy organic food whenever possible. Try to find superfoods and food supplements in your neighborhood. Inform yourself; read articles about healthy foods. Super Foods may be a bit more expensive, but you can be sure that the food you are eating has not been processed and has been grown without the use of fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and other poisonous chemicals.

Here are some Food Processing Rules to Follow

  • Include as many superfoods in your diet as you can.
  • Eat lots whole grains.
  • Also eat the skin of vegetables and fruits.
  • Don't cut, juice, wash, or soak fruits and vegetables until you are ready to use them.
  • Drink lots of fresh fruit and vegetable juice.
  • Add plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to every meal you eat.
  • Eat raw food whenever possible. If you're cooking your food, use as little water as possible.

Unfortunately, some of the best superfoods might not be available in your neighborhood, but that isn't so bad anymore as it was only a few years ago, If I would have even known about Acai berries for example, ten years ago, I still wouldn't have had the means to go to Brazil to get some. Today it's far easier, you just visit our health shop and you order all the superfoods you ever wanted and they are at your doorstep 2 days later! That's what I call progress.  Or you go to the next online bookstore and order a book full of superfood recipes and you start cooking healthy foods with the everyday superfoods what you can get in your neighborhood.

Blueberries – Super Food For a Reason

What makes blueberries a superfood?

Blueberries don't really look anything special. Yet they are quite delicious and versatile. In fact it is strange to believe that such a small fruit is actually a superfood. In the interests of improving my health and that of my family I've been doing some studying about superfoods, the pros, cons and benefits. I'm also interested in how we can increase our use of these superfoods in our diet without blowing the budget. Consequently, I'm not only learning all about superfoods and their uses but how to grow them myself (wherever practical).

Blueberries are a superfood because they are packed with anti-oxidants and phytonutrients. Why are these important? Antioxidants help reduce free radicals in our bodies and are widely believed to help prevent heart disease and cancer. Phytonutrients are still undergoing research but it is known that? they also help to reduce free radicals. It is also the fact that they are rich in phytonutrients that means although they do not contain significant amounts of Vitamins C or E the body receives as much antioxident protection as if? you had taken vitamin C and E. These little blue berries also contain potassium (an essential mineral for strengthening blood vessels) and vitamin C. It is this richness in vitamins and minerals that makes them a superfood and the top choice for adding to a healthy diet. By adding blueberries to your diet you can help?lower your risk of heart disease and cancer. Another amazing benefit is that? they are also anti-inflammatory. Another amazing benefit is the effect that they have on our brain. Research has shown that blueberries high quantities of phytonutrients help improve the communication between brain cells and can delay the onset of dementia and aging. When choosing your blueberries you need to look for the darker coloured berries as the darker the colour the more anti-oxidents they contain. Growing your own blueberries is relatively simple and will give you a fresh supply but the best part is you can also freeze them. Frozen and dried blueberries are just as beneficial to your health and diet as fresh. Fresh, frozen or dried there really is no reason not to have blueberries in your home ready to add to your diet every day. You do not have to eat blueberries by the handful. Instead you can add them to a range of delicious recipes. In fact adding blueberries to a smoothie has the added advantage of giving you additional fruit portions and calcium. A very simple idea for a smoothie is to add 1 cup of blueberries, to 1 cup of pro-biotic low fat natural yoghurt, half a cup of fruit juice (orange or pineapple are great) and a teaspoon of honey. Mix in a blender or smoothie maker and serve. Another delicious and simple way to add blueberries to your diet is to make blueberry muffins or fruity granola pots. Both of these dishes are great ways to get your children to eat blueberries. Introducing Superfoods to You and Your Family

What are Superfoods?

Raw Food Healthy Food - CarrotsIt is commonly known that our bodies require food for essential nutrients and energy, but some foods are better than others, and some are even better than that. These foods at the top of the list are known as superfoods, which are rich in vitamins and have been proven to improve your health and reduce your risk for many diseases.

What are the benefits of superfoods?

Superfoods are especially good for you because they’re rich in vitamins, minerals, and extra compounds that are good for your health and easy to process. Things such as omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and many things that are hard to pronounce. Superfoods have been involved in scientific studies to back up the health claims made for them.

How do I get these foods into my diet?

To begin using superfoods in your diet, start slowly. Change your snack of potato chips or candy to a cup of low fat flavored yogurt, and trade out lunch for a baked chicken sandwich with light mayo, a side salad, and some string cheese. Once you feel comfortable with this change, you can incorporate more super foods.

Getting your family and friends involved will provide a support system and make things even easier. It is a very simple change to make, and the benefits you’ll reap are priceless, but it does require that you do it and keep up with it. Don’t change your habits just long enough to loose a few pounds. I promise you’ll be much happier if you stick with it.

What about getting my kids to eat healthy?

The easiest way to get a child to eat healthy is to start young. Every parent has to go through the process of finding out what their kids love, what they will tolerate, and what will end up on the wall. This happens whether you choose to feed your child healthy or unhealthy food. The problem arises when you decide to make a change for the better and your child, who is used to (and loves) their current unhealthy eating habits, resists with full force.

But changing the eating habits of your whole family doesn’t have to end in tears with every meal. Just like anyone, kids need to be introduced to healthy eating slowly. This can be a positive change that you go through together, rather than against each other. There are just a few basic rules.

Pick your Battles

If your child loves carrots but feeds broccoli to the dog when you’re not looking, don’t fuss. Don’t cause a fight that will push them further and further into rebellion. Don’t give them broccoli for dinner. Instead mix a small amount in a homemade salad dressing, or a smoothie. Someday, their tastes may change and they decide to they love broccoli. It happens all the time.

Include your child in the preparation.

Many children love to assist in the kitchen. They feel important and it creates a great bonding opportunity. So let them help by washing or tearing vegetables, help them set the table, or even ask them to help you choose the food to make (within boundaries.) If your child is to the point they hate helping, ask them very nicely to do small things for you and give them lots of praise on what a great job they did without patronizing them. It helps build their willingness to do it again.

Make it fun

One way to encourage kids both to help in the kitchen AND to eat the food, is to make the preparation fun. Make the food into fun shapes or play kids music while you prepare. You could make the preparation into a game, make sound effects and be as silly as you want. You’ll be surprised to discover that you want to be in the kitchen more and more, too.

As with all diet changes, getting your child to eat healthy will take a little bit of work, some understanding, a healthy dose of creativity, and a whole lot of patience. It will also take compromises here and there. The end result is well worth the battle, though. So keep it up and one day your child will thank you.

Top Superfoods For Your Health

Learn About The Top Superfoods For Your Health

If you’re interested in increasing the amount of superfoods in your diet, you might want to start by incorporating some of the ones which provide the most health benefits. These top superfoods can do wonders for your body and your health in many ways. Here’s a look at some of the ones you should be eating now.

Fish

While most of the top superfoods come from the produce section, fish is one striking exception. The reason comes down to a powerful nutrient known as Omega-3 fatty acid. This compound can be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, and herring. Thankfully, these same fish are the ones less likely to contain high concentrations of mercury. By eating fish twice per week, you can cut back on your risk of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, strokes, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Soy

Another of the non-produce aisle top superfoods is soy. Soy is rich in protein which makes it the perfect replacement for red meat in your diet. However, some research has also found that soy can reduce the risk of cancer, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Part of the benefit comes from the isoflavones, these powerful antioxidants, can help prevent cancer, aging, and possibly heart disease.

Tomatoes

Lycopene is one of the most well-known antioxidants, and it can be found in large amounts in tomatoes and tomato-products. Thanks to lycopene, you can greatly reduce your risk of cancer, particularly if you make a habit of eating your tomatoes with olive oil.

Pumpkin

Although you might have always thought pumpkin pie was super, pumpkins are among the top superfoods for a couple of reasons. First, they are rich in carotenoids. These are antioxidants proven to reduce the risk of cancer. They also contain large quantities of beta-carotene, as well as alpha-carotene. These antioxidants can help your immune system work better and can actually prevent you from getting cataracts.

Blueberries

In terms of top superfoods, you don’t get much better than blueberries. These delectable fruits contain a wide range of healthful compounds. Their blue color means they are rich in anthocyanidins, these chemicals can help improve brain functioning and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Blueberries are also rich in amhocyanidins which promote heart health and reduce cancer risks.

Other Top Superfoods

In addition to the five listed above, your health will benefit if you add some of the other top superfoods available, including broccoli, walnuts, green tea, spinach, and more. Remember that you’ll always get the most benefits by choosing the freshest foods and combining the most colorful foods on your plate.

Dietotherapy with Superfoods

Superfood is Beneficial for your Health

Blueberries are Superfoods with lots of antioxidantsSo what exactly are superfoods? According to wikipedia, superfood is a term that sometimes is used to describe food with high phytonutrient and antioxidant content that some may believe confers health benefits as a result. For example, blueberries are often considered a superfood (or superfruit) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants, anthocyanins, vitamin C, manganese, and dietary fiber. Phytonutrients or phytochemicals are plant derived chemical compounds that are known for their potential health promoting properties.

Phytochemicals have been used as therapeutic drugs for millennia. A popular example of this is salicin, which has pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties which was originally extracted from the white willow tree and later synthetically produced to create the commonly used over the counter drug aspirin. Superfoods though as a modern term are more specifically found in the form of everyday foods we can eat to enhance our overall health, as opposed to specific herbal applications to help remedy specific body ailments.

An example of a modern superfood which we eat everyday that is also a remedy to a disease are oranges, tangerines and other fruit which are rich in vitamin C, can counteract scurvy which is a disease due to vitamin C deficiency. Garlic also behaves as a food and as a remedy for bacillary dysentery.

That being said, knowing which types of phytochemicals are found in which types of plants is great to know if we are looking to relieve and help heal specific ailments. It is interesting to note that there is no legal definition of the term ‘Superfood’. For example dieticians and nutritional scientists for the most part do not use the term superfoods as a common term among their peers. Also many claim that consuming particular foodstuffs do not actually confer an actual health benefit. To me this is actually quite shocking because it obvious to me that some foods will have a completely different impact on the body than others.

I don’t need a nutritionist to tell me this, I can actually feel the difference bodily. Not only that but taking food as medicine has been practiced by ancient cultures for millennia. The Chinese especially come to mind, they even have a specific term called Dietotherapy – which refers to the treatment of disease by taking common foodstuffs.

These foodstuffs in China are sometimes called by the name of medicinal foods. Modern western medicine though does not recognize everyday ‘food’ as medicine, so knowing this you can understand why western nutritionists and scientists frown on the term superfoods.

Simply put, food contains the various nutrients which provide the energy supply for the body’s growth and activities. Nutrients are essential for people during illness to overcome pathogenic factors and repair tissue damage, and to resist and prevent diseases while in good health. All foods have different chemical composition and nutritional values, so it makes sense that some foods will invigorate and heal more so than others.

Superfoods come in all shapes and sizes and there is no definitive ‘superfood list’. This is simply because it is not an official diet and medical term, as stated above. So why is phytonutrient or phytochemical content important to knowing what food are superfoods?

Quite simply as I stated above, phytonutrients or phytochemicals are plant derived chemical compounds that are known for their potential health promoting properties. Some animal derived foods are also known as superfoods.

Here is a good list I have compiled of some of the top superfoods that you can incorporate into your life:

Acai Berry Pulp – A Powerful Superfoods Drink

Powerful Superfoods Drink – Acai Berry Pulp

Acai Berry Pulp the Powerful Antioxidant DrinkSuperfoods are the latest craze among health food enthusiasts and advocates of healthy living. Superfoods are natural and unprocessed food that has a high concentration of a variety of nutrients that possess health-enhancing qualities. The premise of the superfoods concept is that your diet can have a great affect on how you physically and mentally feel, both now and in the future.

The funny thing is, superfoods aren’t really all that new to the market. In fact, if you open up your kitchen cabinet or refrigerator right at this moment, there’s a high chance that you would find one or more of these so-called superfoods. What’s new about them, however, is what independent studies by health experts have revealed about their potency in improving our health and well-being.

What these independent studies are saying is that many easy-to-find superfoods have the power to bring about a number of beneficial health effects such as lowering cholesterol, preventing heart disease, fighting off cancer, reducing the likelihood of diabetes, slowing down the signs of aging, lowering hypertension, prolonging life, and even putting someone in a better mood. Many of these are health effects that have traditionally been attained primarily through the use of chemical medicines.

Superfoods have become so popular for two main reasons:

  1. They are a good alternative to traditional medicines because their naturalness means they have no negative side effects.
  2. They are relatively easy to find while also being relatively inexpensive.

So what are some examples of superfoods?

Bananas are superfoods because they are jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, and 8 essential amino acids while also being rich in iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. These nutrients are necessary for healthy bone growth and the general well-being of the immune system.

Blueberries are superfoods because they are full of antioxidants and phytoflavinoids. Antioxidants help rid the body of the toxins that cause aging and infections. They also reduce inflammation, which is a symptom in most chronic diseases.

Fish are superfoods because it contains Omega 3 fatty acids that help lower bad cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.

As you can imagine, a complete list of all the superfoods would be too long to reiterate here.

One of the premier superfoods that have recently received an immense amount of attention from health experts and the media is Acai Berry. It is a small, deep purple berry that grows in the Amazon rainforest and possesses the health-enhancing properties of many superfoods all at once. It has the highest antioxidant capacity out of all the fruits and vegetables ever tested, it is rich in fatty acids, and contains an unending number of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. In other words, the Acai Berry is the superfood of superfoods.

The Acai Berry is the latest great product to hit the health food market. Acai Berry has remarkable antioxidant effects, its cholesterol lowering ability, its enhancement of the cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems and its capacity to restore vitality have been documented by a number of prominent health researchers and experts.

Superfood – The Best Food For Your Health

Only Nature’s Finest for your Health

High on Antioxidants - Avocados are SuperfoodSuperfoods are the type of food that is especially good for your body because it contains many different micro and macro-nutrients, vitamins and minerals. They contain everything your body needs to stay healthy and fight off disease and aging. There are many different kinds of superfoods. This article will explain the benefits of consuming superfoods and list some of the most important ones, their benefits and how you can easily add superfood to your diet.

The term superfood has been created by dieticians and nutritionists to describe the foods that have great nutritional value or medicinal qualities. More and more people are realizing that their diseases and illnesses are being caused by the processed foods they are eating which contain too much sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and salt and that food is natures very own medicine. Many superfoods have been shown to help the body fight inflammation diseases like arthritis, heart disease, a build up of bad cholesterol, and premature signs of aging. What follows is a list of some amazing examples of superfood and an explanation of why they are so good.

Avocado: The avocado is a superfood from Central and South America but is now grown in many tropical areas around the world. It is a egg or pear shaped green fruit slightly larger than an apple with a large pit. The skin turns darker the more ripe it is. Some amazing facts about this superfood include that 75% of its calories consist of good monosaturated fat, it contains 60% more potassium than the average banana and also contains a lot of vitamin B, E and K. The avocado also contains a lot of fiber.

Eating a lot of avocado has shown to be beneficial for cholesterol levels in the blood. People eating avocados for just seven days experienced a 22% drop in their harmful cholesterol levels in one scientific study.

Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes are only distantly related to normal potatoes, it is actually a root, and they are much healthier for people than normal potatoes.
