What Are Superfoods and Why Are They So Important?

The Health Benefits of Superfoods

Nutrient Rich Raw Food is Healthy FoodIt has become hard these days to get all the necessary  nutrients our body needs in the normal food we eat every day. With the steadily increasing selection of fast food burger and fish shops, and restaurants serving huge portions of not very healthy food, it's hard to get your head on straight and eat the right things. Even though it is very important for your health to get the right nutrition in your daily diet, it's hard to know what exactly those right foods are. Let me tell you something about Superfoods and explain the difference between 'normal food' and Superfoods.

Your body and your mind need a certain amount and combination of nutrients to function at the highest possible level. You usally get these nutrients by eating food, but here is the catch; not all food provides the same nutrition. Some foods are better than others. Some foods are even bad for your health, and eating them can increase your risks for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetis and more. Some foods will give you good energy and the nutrients you need. And then there are the best foods which are extraordinary rich in nutrients; these foods are called superfoods. These superfoods contain various substances such as minerals, antioxidants and enzymes. We need to have theses substances because they have shown to improve our overall health and reduce the risk of getting sick. We don't need to get all of the diseases that plague people all over the civilized world today, we just need to eat the right foods.

We define disease as an impairment of health by a condition of the body or mind that causes dysfunction. We can define health as a condition of the body that is free from disease. If you eat food that is unhealthy for you and doesn't contain the nutrients you need, it can lead to malnutrition. If you have malnutrition, you may not even notice it but it could lead to disease or great risk for disease.

Superfoods are especially good for you because they are so rich in the minerals and nutrients that your body needs. Since they also contain substances that have been proven to improve your health, they have a huge impact to your general health. There are so many benefits to eating Superfoods that there really is no excuse not to work them into your daily diet. Superfoods contain compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, phytochemicals (natural chemicals found in plants) and dietary fiber. All Superfoods have been clinically tested and the health claims have been proven.

If you add just a few Superfoods to your diet you can improve your health by a lot. You will keep your heart healthy, boost your immune system to stay free of illness, find that you can lose weight easier, keep from getting diabetes, and prevent certain types of cancer and so much more. Keeping Superfoods in your diet will allow you to age much easier without all of the little health bumps in the road.

If your diet consists of eating too many calories and unhealthy foods, you run the risk of becoming obese. When you eat bad foods, they may also provide you with the nutrients you need, but will also do damage to your body at the same time. Eating bad foods once in awhile will not do any damage, but if you make a routine out of it, eventually the ill effects will begin to surface. If you stick to Superfoods then your body will get all of the nutrients it needs without the extra calories and unhealthy ingredients.

Superfoods are Extremly Beneficial for our Immune System

Paul Ehrlich - Nobel Prize in 1908

Paul Ehrlich

Superfoods have been around for decades. Only in the last few years have they gone really main stream. Products have been based around them and many diet authorities have been singing praises of Superfoods. They can make you healthier, give you more energy, and help you resist disease and more.

Most people eat food because they want to enjoy the taste and not because they want to get the right nutrition. The unfortunate truth is that most foods that taste good and that we like to eat, do not have many healthy benefits to them. If cheese burgers helped you lose weight and boost your immune system, our country would be among the healthiest in the world. Unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way.

There are a few reasons people do not eat the healthiest foods. One reason is that it usually doesn’t taste as good as unhealthy foods but mostly it’s because they just haven’t had the proper education about the health benefits that come with eating nutritional foods such as Superfoods.

I’m going to give you a bit of education right now. Here is a list of the many benefits you can achieve by eating Superfoods and a little bit of information about each one.

Boost Your Immune System: Superfoods are great at helping to boost your immune system. Research has shown that many Superfoods contain the ability to help you prevent diseases such as heart disease, cancer and even common ailments like colds and infections. Superfoods that specialize in this area are Resveratrol and Garlic.

Keeping Your Heart Healthy: Your heart works incredibly hard to keep your body functioning and most people do not even know it. Since you are not thinking consciously about the work it’s doing, it’s easy to take it for granted. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women. Luckily, Superfoods work to keep your heart healthy and working smoothly without any prescriptions. Superfoods like colorful fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids, which can reduce inflammation in your arteries, work to reduce your cholesterol and blood pressure. Fish, nuts and seeds contain polyunsaturated fatty acids that work to lower your cholesterol. Fruits vegetables and oatmeal also contain a lot of fiber, which helps to lower your cholesterol as well.

Losing Weight Easier: An unfortunate statistic is that more than 70% of all US adults are overweight. About a third of the population is obese. This has to change or many people are going to live shorter, unhealthy lives. Poor diet and inactivity are the major reasons for the high amount of obesity. The main way to solve this issue is to exercise and eat better, but you can also eat Superfoods which will help you lose weight easier. The best Superfoods for losing weight faster are items with omega-3 fatty acids, green tea and dark chocolate.

You can eat all of the Superfoods possible and it still won’t help you if you do not have a good diet and exercise plan. Think of the future and your children. Shouldn’t you do anything and everything in your power to ensure that you are healthy and live a long life, for your children, if not for yourself?

Top Superfoods For Your Health

Learn About The Top Superfoods For Your Health

If you’re interested in increasing the amount of superfoods in your diet, you might want to start by incorporating some of the ones which provide the most health benefits. These top superfoods can do wonders for your body and your health in many ways. Here’s a look at some of the ones you should be eating now.

Fish

While most of the top superfoods come from the produce section, fish is one striking exception. The reason comes down to a powerful nutrient known as Omega-3 fatty acid. This compound can be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, and herring. Thankfully, these same fish are the ones less likely to contain high concentrations of mercury. By eating fish twice per week, you can cut back on your risk of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, strokes, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Soy

Another of the non-produce aisle top superfoods is soy. Soy is rich in protein which makes it the perfect replacement for red meat in your diet. However, some research has also found that soy can reduce the risk of cancer, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Part of the benefit comes from the isoflavones, these powerful antioxidants, can help prevent cancer, aging, and possibly heart disease.

Tomatoes

Lycopene is one of the most well-known antioxidants, and it can be found in large amounts in tomatoes and tomato-products. Thanks to lycopene, you can greatly reduce your risk of cancer, particularly if you make a habit of eating your tomatoes with olive oil.

Pumpkin

Although you might have always thought pumpkin pie was super, pumpkins are among the top superfoods for a couple of reasons. First, they are rich in carotenoids. These are antioxidants proven to reduce the risk of cancer. They also contain large quantities of beta-carotene, as well as alpha-carotene. These antioxidants can help your immune system work better and can actually prevent you from getting cataracts.

Blueberries

In terms of top superfoods, you don’t get much better than blueberries. These delectable fruits contain a wide range of healthful compounds. Their blue color means they are rich in anthocyanidins, these chemicals can help improve brain functioning and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Blueberries are also rich in amhocyanidins which promote heart health and reduce cancer risks.

Other Top Superfoods

In addition to the five listed above, your health will benefit if you add some of the other top superfoods available, including broccoli, walnuts, green tea, spinach, and more. Remember that you’ll always get the most benefits by choosing the freshest foods and combining the most colorful foods on your plate.

What’s So Super About SuperFoods?

The Role of Antioxidants in Superfoods

There is so much talk around superfoods lately and the health benefits of including them in your diet. As a doctor who specializes in anti-aging strategies, I can truly say that the addition of superfoods to your daily food intake optimizes health and lowers the risk of disease. When I recommend to my patients that they should add more greens and whole foods to their diet they inevitably want to know more about what, why, and how.

Superfoods – What are they?

Superfoods are whole foods that have been identified by leading nutritionists, and dieticians as being high in a variety of essential vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals – the substances in all plants that give them color, flavor and disease resistance. Superfoods contain more disease fighting compounds than other foods with similar amounts of protein or fat.

Although all fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and nutrients, some contain far higher amounts of these nutritional properties. These foods have become known as superfoods and the description is obvious when you learn more about their healthy powers. It’s as though nature loaded all the nutritional necessities into a wonderful array of foods for all to enjoy.

However, even though green foods are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, most people don’t eat enough servings to reap their benefits. Greens infuse your body with easily absorbed vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fiber, chlorophyll, enzymes, and alkaline minerals that help to neutralize acids in the blood and tissues.

Superfoods – Why are they important?

Without getting too technical let’s take a look at the three major benefits jammed packed in all superfoods and why they are so important: antioxidants, nutrients, and fiber.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants strengthen the immune system, muscles, bones and skin by protecting the body from wear and tear. As we age, cell-damaging “free radicals” begin to form due to stress, excessive exercise, extended sun exposure, and unhealthy processed and sugary foods. Antioxidants stabilize cell-damage and minimize the damage caused by free radicals.

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity of the measured fruit, spice or vegetable. This acronym is one of the critical anti- aging functions of superfoods. Experts recommend 3000-5000 points daily intake to slow down the aging process.

To give you a better idea of ORAC values see the table of Superfoods listed from USDA Agricultural Research Service, February 1999.

SAMPLE SUPERFOODS ORAC VALUES (PER 31/2-OZ SERVING)

  1. Blueberries – 2400
  2. Broccoli- 890
  3. Blackberries- 2036
  4. Kale- 1770
  5. Spinach- 1260

Nutrients

Most of these foods contain important vitamins and minerals needed in your diets but are usually lacking. They include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and B vitamin folate, magnesium and potassium. Certain pnes also contain good carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats.

Fiber

The recommended amount of fiber needed in a healthy diet is 25-30g/daily. The typical American usually takes in half that amount which is why I encourage eating more whole foods. They aid in digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Fiber increases insulin effectiveness and gives you a feeling of fullness while lowering your risk of disease.

Superfoods – How can I get enough?

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is at least two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables every day (America Journal of Preventive Medicine, April 2007). Unfortunately, only 11% of adults in the United States meet that guideline.

If you are a veggie lover but don’t know which foods are best for you, try adding a few of these Superfoods to your diet:

  • Apples
  • Beans and legumes
  • Blueberries and Bilberries
  • Broccoli
  • Flaxseed
  • Garlic
  • Sweet Potato (orange)
  • Salmon
  • Spinach
  • Green Tea / Olong Tea
  • Tomatoes

On the other hand if you don’t like the taste of vegetables but still want the superfood health advantages here is good news! There are powders and supplement formulas with high concentrations of superfoods that will help provide you with the anti aging benefits.

There’s no excuse for not getting all the healthy nutrient-rich greens and whole foods one way or another. The most important thing is to find a way to consume the recommended daily amount of superfoods in a way that works best for you.
