Why are Superfoods so Important for our Health?

George The Owner of Superfoods InofsSuperfoods are known to us for almost a thousand years and if you look at Asia, for more than three thousand years! Although many scientists in the western world are well aware of the existence and the effect that superfoods have on the human body, the interest of the pharmaceutical industry remains very low, for the simple reason, that there is no money to be made with superfoods! Nevertheless, the same pharmaceutical industry is employing most of the scientists and therefor blocking evolution itself.  I strongly believe superfoods to be the most important discovery of mankind, and here is why:

On April 29th 2010 I was diagnosed with skin cancer; Squamous cell carcinoma to be precise. That was devastating news. At first, I went in circles and didn't know what to do; for sure I wasn't going to give up and die just like that! And as so often in the most miserable moments of our lives,  a friend was there to help. She recommended the movie "Food Matters" to me. After watching the movie about five times, a light started to shine on the dark horizon and I started to implement everything I had learned about superfoods in this move  into my own live. But I had licked blood and I was sure that wasn't all I could do. I started to search on Google and I learned everything there was to know about skin cancer and about superfood.

The amount of information I found was just overwhelming and I quickly wished there was a place you could get all this Information about Superfoods on one single place. There are many good websites out there about nutrition and super food and antioxidants and what the do. So I had the idea to create a website with articles from all these valuable websites, with links to the appropriate site, so everybody who would come to my site would find all the infos easily and could start using available superfoods right away.

After my initial diagnose of skin cancer I had started to take food supplements, such as Vitamin C every day, and most of all "Peking Grass" that considerably pushed the immune system, and a multivitamin  pill per day. I eat mostly raw food, salads, vegetables and fruits and I work out 6 days a week for an hour. At the end of May 2010 I had a second surgery on my neck. I don't want to tell you about my feelings at this time, when I had to wait 10 days for the result. On top of it all, this all happened in Bangkok to the time when the city was under lock-down and looked more like Beirut than the the Thai metropolis. In short, a depressive time. And therefore, when the result finally came back negative, the relief was unimaginable!

Since then I keep up with my new lifestyle. I keep my diet, and I started to love it and I really don't miss any other food at all. There are so many healthy foods out there, it simply makes no sense to me to eat anything else. My weight loss in 5 month was 10 kg on fat and I gained about 7 kg on pure muscle! So I actually can only pride myself of  loosing 3 kg weight in total but if I look in the mirror I can see that the masses have moved from down on my belly and my waist, upwards to my chest and my shoulders! That looks much better I can tell you! As of today I'm still cancer free and I intend to keep it that way. The only regret I have is that I didn't know all that what I know today about superfoods, years ago. I would have saved myself a great deal of trouble, not to speak of the money. Cancer is an expensive thing to have if you don't have an insurance. So please do yourself a huge favor and read through as many articles as you can here. Lately, you’ve probably been hearing a lot about “superfoods“. A Google search of the term will lead to a large collection of websites on this topic. You’ll be overwhelmed by advertisements to buy Goji Berries from the Himalaya and Chlorella, a blue-green algae referred to as “Nature’s Perfect Superfood” from the sea. You will read about raw cacao, and how beneficial it is for your health and about many other health products.

Organizations like the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which is very reputable, are tapping into the superfoods craze today. The CSPI offers information about all the superfoods that everyone needs and “10 Superfoods for Better Health!” Some other not-so-reputable sources of information are talking about multiple (and questionable) potions and elixirs making unrealistic promises. Most of these companies offer to deliver the benefits of superfoods quickly and easily, without actually having to eat any of the food. That doesn’t sound right to me.

So, now what is this superfoods hype all about? And what is in it for your health?

From Superfoods to Superdiet

The idea of taking superfoods mostly begins with an interest in certain foods that only are found in a few specific and sometimes remote regions of the world. It’s exotic! Soy foods, for example, areone of the first foods to be called super food. Traditional soy foods, like Tofu, Miso, and Tempeh, are consumed a lot in far east Asian countries, such as Thailand, Japan and Korea. In these areas, soy beans have been consumed for generations.

The above mentioned countries also happen to enjoy some of the worldwide lowest levels of chronic diseases. Rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and strokes represent only a fraction of what they are in Europe and in the United States

Soy Bean Foods are one obvious dietary difference between Asia and many western countries. This led people to suspect that soy foods were special or super in their ability to heal or to at least prevent diseases. This might seem like a logical conclusion to you. Most Asian cultures consume soy foods, so most Asian cultures enjoy very low disease rates and therefore, soy foods must prevent disease.

Although traditional Asian soy foods can be part of a healthy diet an it is true that these foods contain an abundance of phytonutrients (plant nutrients) and medical research does support the disease preventive properties of whole soy bean foods, it is not true that soy and soy alone is responsible for the superior health and longevity found in these Asian countries. There are far more differences in what people eat in Asian and in Western cultures, to simply credit the low disease rates to soy beans alone.

Asian people tend to be leaner. They often get more exercise, more sleep, and less fat in the diet than the rest of the civilized world. Asians may have better social and extended family lives and far less stress in their daily lives. Asians eat less processed foods and a lot more vegetables and rice. They consume plants that are never or rarely eaten in western cultures, such as seaweed. All of these factors are likely to contribute to the low disease rates seen in Asia.

Eat green, yellow, red, purple, blue, and orange foods: Eat kale, chard, and kiwi (green); pineapples, bananas, and corn (yellow); apples, strawberries, raspberries, red beans, beets, and tomatoes (red); plums, blackberries, blueberries, raisins, and eggplant (purple); and carrots, oranges, sweet potatoes, and melon (orange). These are just a few of the dozens of brightly colored foods that you’ll need if you want to eat a super diet.

What exactly are Superfoods?

Suddenly every simple apple seems to have gotten superfood standard. But superfoods have always caught my attention. Mostly though because people like to hear about quick fixes, so a lot of people are writing about it and they get a lot of publicity and attention. Actually I should rephrase that statement. Americans are all about quick fixes. In America the supplement industry has taken off and in the rest of the western world, in particular in Europe it looks not much different. We have supplements for just about everything you can imagine. So it is just natural for people to be promoting superfoods. Superfoods just feed the hunger for a quick fix or a one size fits all cure for everyone. The question then becomes, if superfoods really work, or if they are just another scam like most of the food supplements released. Lets take a look at some facts.

Defining Superfoods

One of the problems when it comes to superfoods is actually defining a superfood. Since the term has come out people always use the term now for any food to just get attention. Type in superfoods in Google and you will come up with sites that have regular everyday fruits and vegetables listed as superfoods. I am talking about foods like apples, oranges, and broccoli. Nothing exotic, but people consider them super. This is not what I think of when it comes to superfoods. I think more along the line of medical mushrooms, certain herbs, goji berries, raw cacao, maca, etc… Foods that are more mysterious to us here in America, but are still possible to get a hold of. I feel that the term superfood is now being used to just get more people to eat fruit and vegetables for they do not freak out when they hear recommendations to be eating goji berries when they do not even eat apples. Whatever the reason just note when I refer to superfoods I am referring to more exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, and even seaweed.

Superfood Nutrition

The biggest question about superfoods is are they really super, and do we need to consume them? I find it funny that some people actually bash superfoods saying their is no difference, or the just eat regular fruit and vegetables defense. It is interesting we rank everything in America, but we do not rank are food in terms of nutrition. The Yankees are a good baseball team because they got a lot of good players(and money), but all fruit is considered equal even if some fruits have more nutrition then others. Superfoods in my opinion is just the ranking of certain foods in terms of vitamins and minerals, and then eating the foods that are the best. You can only eat so many foods in your life so why not eat the top foods? That is what a superfood nutrition motto would be.

Another interesting topic to discuss is are superfoods actually whole foods? We want to get our nutrition from whole foods as much as possible because their are many different chemicals in plants that we have not discovered or researched yet. So many people only pay attention to the big known vitamins and minerals like calcium and vitamin C. Those are important, but they are not the thing to worry about. Eating fruits and vegetables will get you plenty of all the main vitamins and minerals, but I want to try to get a wide variety of the other undiscovered stuff in plants. Most superfoods have been found to have lots and lots of different chemicals in them that are completely unknown.

Are Superfoods Needed For Optimal Health?

No. Just plain and simple. You can get to an amazing level of health and never eat a single cacao bean. Can they help you get to those levels faster? You bet. Are they an easy way to get a lot of nutrients. You bet. Most are minimally processed and contain tons of nutrients. I recommend that you find the superfood that works for you, and you like the taste.
