Acai and Goji Berries – Superfoods Or Just Exotic Berries?

Acai Berry Palm Trees in BrazilIn recent years, Acai and Goji berry fruits have become extremely popular across the world, particularly in North America. The Acai and Goji health food extracts are sold separately, and in combined extract form as Acai Goji juices and health food supplements. Many claims have been made about the marvelous health benefits of Acai and Goji berries; some based on fact, others quite exaggerated. So let's just forget the hype and examine the facts.

The Acai berry is the fruit of the Acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea), which grows wild in Central and South America, particularly in the rain forests of Brazil. Each tree produces two crops of Acai berries annually, with between 700 and 900 berries per crop. Acai berries are purple-black in color, similar in appearance to, but smaller than, a grape. The Acai berry is known also as the Amazon berry, Brazilian berry and Brazilian palm berry.

The Goji berry is the fruit of the Lycium barbarum plant, now grown in many parts of the world, but mostly in China, Mongolia and the Tibetan Himalayas. Goji is believed to have originated in Asia and Southeast Europe many thousands of years ago. The Goji is a small red berry, similar in shape to a currant and known by several other names including Wolf berry, Chinese wolfberry, Mede berry, Lycium, Tibetan Goji, Himalayan Goji and Matrimony berry.

Native populations have used Acai and Goji berries for centuries for their nutritional and medicinal benefits. Contemporary scientific research has confirmed what the native populations have always known: Acai and Goji have real and substantial health benefits.

Scientists have confirmed that the superior antioxidant properties of these highly nutritious fruits can significantly decrease the destructive nature of free radicals – the byproducts produced by the body that can harm your immune system. Research has even found that the Acai berry has a far greater antioxidant density than red wine and green tea!

According to recent studies, Acai berries have a higher calorie (and hence energy) content than Goji berries and greater densities of fiber and "good" fats (oleic acid). Goji berries however have higher concentrations of rich minerals, vitamins, amino acids and carbohydrates.

Compared with many other fruits and foods, both Acai and Goji are high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, dietary fibers and healthy fats. Together these provide significant benefits for the cardiovascular system, brain, skin, joints, and immune system; and also assist with disease prevention, digestion, appetite suppression and healthy aging.

Little wonder there has been a massive increase in sales of Acai and Goji products in recent years confirming the rating of these berries as nature's Superfoods.

Goji Berries – High Antioxidant Superfood

About Goji Berries

Goji Berries SuperfoodsGoji berries are in the western world better known as Wolf berries. Goji berries are considered to be one of the most nutrient rich berries on the planet. The Goji berry is a tiny red fruit about the same size as a blueberry. It tastes sour and sweet, with a slight tartness, and is like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. The fruit is nicknamed the "happy berry" because of the sense of well being it is said to induce.

Goji berries are grown predominantly in the Himalayan hills of northwest China and Tibet. They grow on vines and are dried and preserved in the sun. They have been eaten by Tibetan monks and used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

Nutrition of Goji Berries

Goji berries are nutritionally rich. They are packed full of: Antioxidants: they are the richest known source of beta-carotene of all foods (weight for weight they contain 500 times more beta-carotene than oranges!), vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamins B1, B2 and B6, 21 trace minerals, including zinc, calcium and selenium, 18 amino acids, omegas (essential fatty acids) and polysaccharides which fortify and support a healthy immune system.

Anti-oxidants work by "mopping up" unstable molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are caused by pollutants such as cigarette smoke and chemicals in our food. They are highly active, unstable molecules and can damage the body's proteins, fats and DNA. There are many negative effects of free radicals including contributing towards heart disease and cancer as well as speeding up the aging process. Eating a healthy balanced diet and including nutrient rich superfoods like goji berries, reduces the damage done by free radicals.

Health Benefits of Goji Berries

Goji Berries have many health benefits. They are thought to: enhance libido / sex drive and boost energy and general well being, improve cellulite – , assist in weight loss and burn fat, slow ageing, fight cancer, fight heart disease, boost the immune system, improve hearing and eyesight, maintain healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, enhance fertility and reduce morning sickness, build muscle, strengthen bones and tendons, strengthen and support healthy liver and kidney function and maintain a healthy nervous system.

The recommended daily serving of goji berries is between 10-30g. Dried Goji berries are very versatile and can be added to salads, smoothies, muesli, breakfast cereals, yogurt, cakes, or enjoyed as they are as a nutritious and healthy snack.

Superfoods – Improve Brain Functioning and Mood

David Wolfe on How to Get Started on Superfoods Part 2

Lenette Nakauchi’s – Interview with David Wolfe.

Lenette: I have a question about coffee. Coffee is so popular and so important for so many people to keep them on and alert. What superfoods, and I know cacao is always an option, but what other superfoods can give people the same effect or same reward as coffee?

David Wolfe World Famous NutritionistDavid: Marine phytoplankton is very interesting in that regard because it provides energy without stimulation. It’s not a stimulant. The actual methodology or mechanism of how that works I learned from a very interesting scientist by the name of Dr. George Merkle who I had the pleasure of meeting about eight or nine years ago. He actually invited me over to his house and I sat with him for a number of hours one day and described to me what his scientific discoveries were. His scientific discoveries were so massive that he was basically targeted by the ‘World Medical Mafia’ or whatever you want to call it. They had to get rid of him because what he was bringing to the table was so powerful that it kind of deletes the whole idea of pharmaceuticals. In fact, in a lot of ways, it deletes the whole idea of food. Here’s what he discovered: he discovered that the ancient organisms of the planet, plankton, those organisms produce ATP, or nucleotides. ATP, ADP, all these different types of nucleotides. Now this is actually the energy currency of our cell. Our cell doesn’t run on protein, carbohydrates and fat or burn forms of those things. It actually runs on ATP. So all the food we eat is in the wrong currency. It has to be converted over to ATP, ADP, GTP, GDP, all the nucleotides. Then the nucleotides are packets of energy that our body can use. If we had a food that we could go to that would just be a concentrate of nucleotides, then it would actually completely nourish us, totally energize us, make us alert with a high level of concentration with no stimulation. And that’s exactly what marine phytoplankton is and that’s exactly where Dr. Merkle found that all of those nucleotides could more naturally be concentrated in the environment and could be concentrated even more. You get that, because if you do a dropperful or two droppers full of marine phytoplankton, there’s a tremendous stimulation that’s there, but there’s no crash afterwards because it’s not a stimulant. It’s actually just pure nucleotides.

Lenette: What superfoods can enhance our brain functioning in this book?

David: Goji berries enhance our brain functioning. Cacao, in the right people. Maca. Maca is a very powerful brain food also. It’s actually quite oily. It’s an oily vegetable, a very interesting vegetable in its ability to interface with our neurological functioning. It just goes right into the brain and right into our nervous system. Another one that is right in there is blue-green algae because of the Omega-3, and it has long-chain Omega-3. One of the things about blue-green algae and marine phytoplankton is that they actually contain the same oil, namely DHA, that’s in fish oil. That’s an Omega-3 fatty acid that’s different from what’s in hemp seed or flax seed or chia seed. That’s more of what we need actually. We kind of call them ‘hyperoils’. They’re Omega-3 fatty acids, but they’re longer chain than what’s found in hemp seed, flax seed and chia seed. And that’s appropriate for our brain and eyes.

Lenette: I just feel like, me personally, I’m always looking for more memory, quicker brain functioning, clearer focus and I would assume that a lot of people are looking for that too, if they’re already pretty healthy and energetic.

David: I think you’re right. The number one complaint out there, like in America, is low energy. The number two complaint is actually foggy thinking. Foggy brain, lack of memory. We know that all that is related to the holistic picture of what we’re about. For example there’s a diet and nutrition and detoxification relationship that the more toxic we are, the more cloudy our thinking, the more that we have Candida and critters growing inside of us, foggier thinking. As we clean that stuff out and as we step out of that, then we can kind of dial it in a little bit tighter with superfoods, things like Camu Camu berry, Reishi mushroom, blue-green algae, marine phytoplankton, Maca, Goji berry. If we just are on that high-end fuel and have gotten all the excess out of our body, we’ve detoxified, we’ve gotten the critters out of our body, etc. then we can start to tweak and perturb our brain and memory capacity in a way that…I think we haven’t been there yet. As a population we don’t understand how incredible our brains really are when they’re functioning properly and they’re cleaned out.

Lenette: I have a question about gold to ask you. Gold has been widely used and has been highly valued by civilizations for thousands of years. Even today as the economy struggles, the value of gold steadily rises. What makes gold so unique and special and what do you see in the future for gold?

David: I approach gold from a more alchemical perspective. I grew up mostly with a scientific background with the periodic table of elements and learning that gold is one of many metals on the Earth, I think a little bit devaluing what gold really is. The reason that gold is so interesting, and has been since the beginning of time is because it doesn’t oxidize. When you have gold in a river or sitting on the side of a creek or in your house, it doesn’t oxidize. It never changes color. It’s always pure. It has been understood by the alchemists as being the most pure download of sun or solar energy of any substance that exists in our biosphere. The sun and gold are related to each other. For example, let’s say you’re trying to melt gold and then form it into a tooth, but on that day there’s a solar eclipse. If there’s anything weird going on with the sun, then gold is affected by it. This understanding, more the alchemical understanding of what gold is, is what I got into later, because I realized that the conventional understanding of what gold is doesn’t really add up. It doesn’t explain why there is a problem with crystallizing gold when there is a solar event going on. How could they be related? But they are. And here’s where we’ve come to our understanding of what gold is. Gold is on the same octave, it’s like middle ‘C’ on a keyboard of a piano, and if you go to the next ‘C’ on the right, there you have the sun. If you go to the next ‘C’ on the right, you have the heart. If you go to the next ‘C’ on the right, then you have serotonin. You go to the next ‘C’ on the right and there you have the king on the chessboard. These are all octaves of each other. They’re like metaphors of each other, but they are all related. For example, if there are sunspots going on on the sun, the amount of heart attacks that occur can double on that given day or week. Sunspots on the sun affect deeply what’s going on inside our hearts. So our heart and the sun are connected. Serotonin and the sun and gold are all connected to each other. They’re all in that same octave. Does that make sense?

Lenette: Yes. It’s fascinating.

David: When you take gold, like colloidal gold, you are allowing your body to have access to a frequency that helps you replicate serotonin and what that actually does…like colloidal silver, for example, kills all “parasites”; fungus, yeast, mold, viruses, Candida. Colloidal silver kills all of that. But colloidal gold kind of kills all metaphysical parasites. Another way of saying that is, it increases your stress defense shield.

Lenette: Yeah, I’ve really found that. I’ve been taking that for the past 6 months or so. I feel much happier.

David: Do you find that you’re happier really? Has that been an effect that you’ve noticed? Because that should be an effect.

Lenette: I definitely do. I love my life. I try to do other things, too, to improve my mood; the way I talk or doing a little 10-minute visualization or meditation. There are a lot of other things that I also incorporate. I’m never really sure if it’s the colloidal gold or the combination of everything together. It’s probably that.

David: I’m sure it is. When you get to the point of being into superfoods at the level you’re in, raw foods, and just kind of on the high end, if you take it realistically, you’re in a completely different reality from where everybody else is at. Realistically.

Lenette: It’s just nice to know that I’m doing everything possible. I’m treating myself like a queen drinking gold in the morning.

David Isn’t that great? Ultimately I believe that people who are attracted to these things, to superfoods, to raw foods, to colloidal gold and things of that nature are people who have a high self-esteem about themselves, because they come to a place where they realize, “I’m worth it and I’m now going to give my body the best. I’ve done the other thing and it doesn’t work. Now I’m gonna do it this way.” People are motivated; they’re psyched about it. It’s amazing.

Lenette: I love the affirmation, “I eat the best foods on the planet.” I think I heard that from you. “I eat the best food ever. I drink the best drinks ever,” and I think that’s kind of the culture of the Elements for Life crowd, at least, and a lot of people out there that eat raw foods and superfoods, it’s a great attitude they have.

David: Totally. Thomas Jefferson said this: “One who has a bad attitude cannot be helped no matter what and the brakes will always go against them. And one who has a positive attitude will be carried by the wind.” And it’s like “Whoa, okay.” Just attitude. It all really comes down to attitude, because attitude is the eternal spring from which all abundance arises. So if somebody has a poor attitude, there is no way they can create abundance [robed elements] into their life, because it’s like they’re constantly pouring sewage water into their reality. If somebody has a positive mental attitude and is actually in a state of abundance and is taking on their life’s challenges with a positive attitude, then they are constantly pouring spring water onto their life’s reality. It is really a radical difference. It eventually is what I believe the future of humanity is going to come down to. What is our attitude about this, that and the other thing? It’s really all about that.

Ten Great Superfoods

Seaweed Harvest Indonesia

Picture: Jean-Marie Hullot

Welcome to my second article on the top 20 superfoods. Last week, in my first article, I outlined my personal world top ten superfoods. This week I’m going to finish this superfoods list by looking at numbers 11 to 20. Once again I should mention that these are 10 great foods for all round diet and health. Eat all twenty consistently and you could add several more years in perfect health to your lifespan. And these superfoods are not even expensive!

To begin with; most fruits are healthy and good for you but one of the best weighs in at number 11.

11. The Blueberry: with 6552 ORAC per 100g, this little fruit is packed full of antioxidants which protect the eyes and cardio-vascular system. They also have anti cancer properties. The antioxidants are also found in abundance in blackberries and bilberries. Eat them or drink them all in smoothies, put them into your fruit salad or just eat them on their own. Lots of it!

12. Goji Berries: at number 12 in my list is the Goji berry. There isn’t anything that this great berry doesn’t do! Goji berries are a fantastic superfood. Wait for it- it contains anti-aging and anti-tumor properties, its packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, selenium, zinc and calcium. Goji berries are also high in omegas which are needed for the efficient working of the nervous systems and the brain. Not only are Gojis very healthy, they also taste great! Use them with your cereal, yogurt, in a smoothie, in muesli or dry frozen, just on their own.

13. Sauerkraut: At number 13 its raw sauerkraut. This superfood even increases your libido. Sauerkraut is rich in vitamin C and has been used in the past to treat constipation.

14. Oregano:Belongs in almost any food! Oregano is extremely rich in antioxidants, with more than 200’000 ORAC, so rich that it at the very top of the list of almost any food. This herb is great for improving digestion and the immune function. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Add it to stews and soups but make sure its after cooking or you’ll lose all its goodness.

15. Raspberries: On the 15th place is one of the world’s most eaten superfoods, the humble Raspberry. These are high in fiber and folic acid as well as containing ellagic acid which has been proven to have anti-cancer properties.

16. Carrots: At 16 it’s the humble carrot, loved by humans and by rabbits! These contain antioxidants such as zeaxanthin and lutein which protect against cancer but are also great for protecting the lungs, the eyes and skin.

17. Turmeric: weighs in at number 17. Stacked full of Curcumin which contains also extremely high amounts of antioxidants, 159’000 ORAC units/100g, has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, is incredibly good for the skin and for the sexual stamina.

18. Sea Weed: Seaweed is alkalizing and detoxifying and so powerful that you only need to eat small quantities. You can get it dried and mix it in salads. Seaweed contains lots of protein, calcium, iron, iodine and magnesium. In fact in much higher quantities than any land plants.

19. Slippery Elm Tree Tea: can help assist recovery from stress related disorders, from surgery, inflammation and gastro-intestinal disorders. The Native Americans and the pioneers of the wild west used the inner bark of the Slippery Elm Tree for food to survive and for a medicine to heal. To gain real benefits you need to drink 2-3 cups a day. DO NOT use Slippery Elm Tree products until talking to your doctor.

20. Water: Water has it’s place in this superfoods list because we need water for an efficient brain function! It is most essential for more than that; we need water for our circulation, digestion, stamina, a healthy skin and in fact every bodily function that you can think of. So drink plenty of it!!

Those are my personal top twenty superfoods. Most of these healthy foods are cheap and most of them are also easily available anywhere near to where you live, so be sensible and grab a superfood instead of a burger!

Superfood Called Blue Green Algae

“Superfood” is a term used to describe any of nature’s foods that nutritionists and health professionals widely consider as being a nearly “perfect food.” While there is no uniformly-accepted definition for the term, in general it refers to any food that contains proportionately large amounts of high-nutrition elements like vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals.

Phytochemicals, incidentally, are chemicals that have disease-fighting properties. (A commonly-known phytochemical is beta-carotene, for example). Fresh fruits and vegetables containing phytochemicals have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and inflammation, while strengthening the immune system.

Examples of Superfoods:

Some foods that are widely considered to be superfoods are relatively common foods that are well-known to most people. Meanwhile, others are relatively rare and a bit harder to find.

Some superfoods that can commonly be found at a supermarket are beans, blueberries, red grapes, papaya, pink grapefruit, broccoli, oats, oranges, pumpkin, salmon, soy, spinach, tea, tomatoes, and walnuts.

Meanwhile, there are other superfoods that are a bit more rare, such as spirulina, flax seed, guinoa, chlorella, maca, noni, mangosteen, goji berry, acai, camu camu, wheat grass, barley grass, acerola cherry, and blue-green algae – just to name a few. Most or all of these can be easily found at local health food stores and websites.

Spotlight on Blue-Green Algae:

One of the most interesting is the superfood called blue-green algae. The scientific name for it is aphanizomenon flos-aquae. In its natural state, it is a simple aquatic plant that can be found naturally in rivers, lakes and ponds. Despite being called algae, it is actually a type of bacteria called cyanobacteria.

Blue-green algae is one of the few superfoods listed above that is generally not consumed “as is”, but rather is taken in pill form or as a powder, blended with other nutrient-rich foods.

This superfood is nutrient-rich and very digestible. It contains high-quality protein, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and enzymes. It is also a great source of beta-carotene, vitamins, minerals and chlorophyll.

Like its distant cousin spirulina, the superfood is thought to boost the immune system, helping the body to fight infection. Some studies show that it can increase the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestines. The chlorophyll in blue-green algae may aid in the healing of wounds and burns.

It is easy to see why blue-green algae is referred to as a superfood: it contains so many nutrients.

Ways to Consume Blue-Green Algae

Incorporate the superfood into your diet by using the powder form in:

* shakes: try blending with natural ingredients such as fresh fruits, hemp seeds, flax seed oil, and honey.

* smoothies: mix blue-green algae with coconut meat and water for a real treat.

* tonics: blend into water and add a touch of lemon, sea salt, and cayenne pepper.

* with oatmeal: mix the blue-green algae with oatmeal, raw almond butter, maple syrup or agave nectar for a delicious treat.

This superfood contains a host of dynamic proteins, phytochemicals, nucleic acids, enzymes and carbohydrates that boost the immune system. When the powder is mixed into shakes, smoothies and other natural foods, it can be not only an extremely nutritious treat, but also a very delicious one, as well.

What is a Superfood?

Another Opinion on what is Superfood

Green Spirulina Tablets - Spirulina is also available in powder formA superfood is a whole food that is very rich in nutrients and health promoting properties. In order to be considered a superfood, it should have a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, co factors and so on… There are a lot of so called superfoods out there, but which ones are truly super? Let’s take a look.

Here are some of todays most popular superfoods:

  • Spirulina
  • Chlorella
  • Maca
  • Noni
  • Mangosteen
  • Goji berry
  • Acai
  • Camu Camu
  • Wheatgrass
  • Barley grass
  • Acerola Cherry

All of these superfoods are very rich in nutrients and do have wonderful health promoting properties. But, which ones truly are the best?

From a purely nutritional stand, Spirulina and Chlorella are the best over all superfoods. Spirulina has more concentrated vegetable nutrition than any other whole food known. Chlorella is second in nutrients only to spirulina. Both have the widest and most complete assortment of nutrients and health promoting properties of any food known to man. The others superfoods are also healthy, but in more specific areas.

Goji Berry, Acai and Mangosteen are excellent for antioxidant boosting. Antioxidants are excellent for anti-aging, because they neutralize free radicals which are partly responsible for speeding up the aging process by disrupting DNA. So, pick one of these superfoods to boost your antioxidant levels. You can also boost your antioxidants levels by eating more fruit, particularly berries.

Acerola cherry, noni and camu camu are very rich in Vitamin C and bioflavonoids which are known to boost the immune system. By boosting the immune system, your body produces white blood cells to help fight off infections, viruses and disease. These fruits contain some of the richest whole food sources of vitamin c on earth. It is much better to get vitamin c from these fruits than ascorbic acid which is not a complete food and can be toxic in large amounts.

By far the weakest superfoods that are touted by companies are wheat grass and barley grass. They do not have anywhere near the nutritional makeup of Spirulina or Chlorella, nor do they have any of the specific properties of the other superfoods mentioned above. The grasses certainly are healthy, but I don’t consider them particularly super. Despite the many claims that are made for these grasses, the nutritional profile for them is not very impressive. You would be far better off eating a dark leafy green like kale which is incredibly high in many more nutrients. In that light, I do recommend eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables instead of relying solely on supplements and superfoods for your health.
