Top Superfoods For Your Health

Learn About The Top Superfoods For Your Health

If you’re interested in increasing the amount of superfoods in your diet, you might want to start by incorporating some of the ones which provide the most health benefits. These top superfoods can do wonders for your body and your health in many ways. Here’s a look at some of the ones you should be eating now.

Fish

While most of the top superfoods come from the produce section, fish is one striking exception. The reason comes down to a powerful nutrient known as Omega-3 fatty acid. This compound can be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, and herring. Thankfully, these same fish are the ones less likely to contain high concentrations of mercury. By eating fish twice per week, you can cut back on your risk of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, strokes, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Soy

Another of the non-produce aisle top superfoods is soy. Soy is rich in protein which makes it the perfect replacement for red meat in your diet. However, some research has also found that soy can reduce the risk of cancer, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. Part of the benefit comes from the isoflavones, these powerful antioxidants, can help prevent cancer, aging, and possibly heart disease.

Tomatoes

Lycopene is one of the most well-known antioxidants, and it can be found in large amounts in tomatoes and tomato-products. Thanks to lycopene, you can greatly reduce your risk of cancer, particularly if you make a habit of eating your tomatoes with olive oil.

Pumpkin

Although you might have always thought pumpkin pie was super, pumpkins are among the top superfoods for a couple of reasons. First, they are rich in carotenoids. These are antioxidants proven to reduce the risk of cancer. They also contain large quantities of beta-carotene, as well as alpha-carotene. These antioxidants can help your immune system work better and can actually prevent you from getting cataracts.

Blueberries

In terms of top superfoods, you don’t get much better than blueberries. These delectable fruits contain a wide range of healthful compounds. Their blue color means they are rich in anthocyanidins, these chemicals can help improve brain functioning and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Blueberries are also rich in amhocyanidins which promote heart health and reduce cancer risks.

Other Top Superfoods

In addition to the five listed above, your health will benefit if you add some of the other top superfoods available, including broccoli, walnuts, green tea, spinach, and more. Remember that you’ll always get the most benefits by choosing the freshest foods and combining the most colorful foods on your plate.

Superfood is Beneficial for your Health

Blueberries are Superfoods with lots of antioxidantsSo what exactly are superfoods? According to wikipedia, superfood is a term that sometimes is used to describe food with high phytonutrient and antioxidant content that some may believe confers health benefits as a result. For example, blueberries are often considered a superfood (or superfruit) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants, anthocyanins, vitamin C, manganese, and dietary fiber. Phytonutrients or phytochemicals are plant derived chemical compounds that are known for their potential health promoting properties.

Phytochemicals have been used as therapeutic drugs for millennia. A popular example of this is salicin, which has pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties which was originally extracted from the white willow tree and later synthetically produced to create the commonly used over the counter drug aspirin. Superfoods though as a modern term are more specifically found in the form of everyday foods we can eat to enhance our overall health, as opposed to specific herbal applications to help remedy specific body ailments.

An example of a modern superfood which we eat everyday that is also a remedy to a disease are oranges, tangerines and other fruit which are rich in vitamin C, can counteract scurvy which is a disease due to vitamin C deficiency. Garlic also behaves as a food and as a remedy for bacillary dysentery.

That being said, knowing which types of phytochemicals are found in which types of plants is great to know if we are looking to relieve and help heal specific ailments. It is interesting to note that there is no legal definition of the term ‘Superfood’. For example dieticians and nutritional scientists for the most part do not use the term superfoods as a common term among their peers. Also many claim that consuming particular foodstuffs do not actually confer an actual health benefit. To me this is actually quite shocking because it obvious to me that some foods will have a completely different impact on the body than others.

I don’t need a nutritionist to tell me this, I can actually feel the difference bodily. Not only that but taking food as medicine has been practiced by ancient cultures for millennia. The Chinese especially come to mind, they even have a specific term called Dietotherapy – which refers to the treatment of disease by taking common foodstuffs.

These foodstuffs in China are sometimes called by the name of medicinal foods. Modern western medicine though does not recognize everyday ‘food’ as medicine, so knowing this you can understand why western nutritionists and scientists frown on the term superfoods.

Simply put, food contains the various nutrients which provide the energy supply for the body’s growth and activities. Nutrients are essential for people during illness to overcome pathogenic factors and repair tissue damage, and to resist and prevent diseases while in good health. All foods have different chemical composition and nutritional values, so it makes sense that some foods will invigorate and heal more so than others.

Superfoods come in all shapes and sizes and there is no definitive ‘superfood list’. This is simply because it is not an official diet and medical term, as stated above. So why is phytonutrient or phytochemical content important to knowing what food are superfoods?

Quite simply as I stated above, phytonutrients or phytochemicals are plant derived chemical compounds that are known for their potential health promoting properties. Some animal derived foods are also known as superfoods.

Here is a good list I have compiled of some of the top superfoods that you can incorporate into your life:

Acai Berry Pulp – A Powerful Superfoods Drink

Powerful Superfoods Drink – Acai Berry Pulp

Acai Berry Pulp the Powerful Antioxidant DrinkSuperfoods are the latest craze among health food enthusiasts and advocates of healthy living. Superfoods are natural and unprocessed food that has a high concentration of a variety of nutrients that possess health-enhancing qualities. The premise of the superfoods concept is that your diet can have a great affect on how you physically and mentally feel, both now and in the future.

The funny thing is, superfoods aren’t really all that new to the market. In fact, if you open up your kitchen cabinet or refrigerator right at this moment, there’s a high chance that you would find one or more of these so-called superfoods. What’s new about them, however, is what independent studies by health experts have revealed about their potency in improving our health and well-being.

What these independent studies are saying is that many easy-to-find superfoods have the power to bring about a number of beneficial health effects such as lowering cholesterol, preventing heart disease, fighting off cancer, reducing the likelihood of diabetes, slowing down the signs of aging, lowering hypertension, prolonging life, and even putting someone in a better mood. Many of these are health effects that have traditionally been attained primarily through the use of chemical medicines.

Superfoods have become so popular for two main reasons:

  1. They are a good alternative to traditional medicines because their naturalness means they have no negative side effects.
  2. They are relatively easy to find while also being relatively inexpensive.

So what are some examples of superfoods?

Bananas are superfoods because they are jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, and 8 essential amino acids while also being rich in iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium. These nutrients are necessary for healthy bone growth and the general well-being of the immune system.

Blueberries are superfoods because they are full of antioxidants and phytoflavinoids. Antioxidants help rid the body of the toxins that cause aging and infections. They also reduce inflammation, which is a symptom in most chronic diseases.

Fish are superfoods because it contains Omega 3 fatty acids that help lower bad cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.

As you can imagine, a complete list of all the superfoods would be too long to reiterate here.

One of the premier superfoods that have recently received an immense amount of attention from health experts and the media is Acai Berry. It is a small, deep purple berry that grows in the Amazon rainforest and possesses the health-enhancing properties of many superfoods all at once. It has the highest antioxidant capacity out of all the fruits and vegetables ever tested, it is rich in fatty acids, and contains an unending number of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. In other words, the Acai Berry is the superfood of superfoods.

The Acai Berry is the latest great product to hit the health food market. Acai Berry has remarkable antioxidant effects, its cholesterol lowering ability, its enhancement of the cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems and its capacity to restore vitality have been documented by a number of prominent health researchers and experts.
