Superfoods For Health

What are Superfoods? Superfoods are whole foods. Whole foods are foods that are unprocessed or are only minimally processed in a way that none or little of the nutrition has been altered or destroyed. Canned foods for example, are processed foods. Cooked foods are also processed foods and therefore less healthy than raw foods.

Superfoods are not necessarily some exotic fruits. Apples have been proven to be potent weapons against cancer, heart disease, asthma, and type 2 diabetes but other fruits and vegetables have some remarkable health benefits as well. Or strawberries and raspberries for instance; they contain a compound called ellagic acid, one of the best cancer fighters nature ever created. When you’re eating these fruits the ellagic acid enters the bloodstream and will help to destroy cancer cells on contact.

Other “Superfoods” which can improve your health, boost your immune system to a healthy level and take care of anti aging are:

  • Beans such as pinto beans, black beans and lentils are another series of foods to lower cholesterol, combat heart disease, stabilize blood sugar, reduce obesity, relieve constipation and lessen the risk of cancer.
  • Blueberries are a small but mighty nutritional force. They combine more powerful antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetables. Although they have many health benefits, the one thing they are known for most is the ability to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Broccoli is a great cancer fighter and very beneficial in many other ways as well.
  • Avocados are believed to help lower cholesterol and they are rich in magnesium (an essential nutrient for healthy bones)
  • Dark chocolate may come as a real surprise to most, as being one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It’s a source of phytonutrients which act as an antioxidant that helps protect our DNA and inhibits the growth of unwanted blood vessels. Make sure you buy the right kind of dark chocolate, one that isn’t as processed and has a high cacao content. Raw cacao beans or nibs are even better since the chocolate needs to be heated up.
  • Garlic and onions are great cancer fighting foods
  • Honey is beneficial in maintaining optimal blood-sugar levels. Honey should be consumed as is, fresh from the spoon. adding honey to your tea will destroy most of it’s benefits.
  • Kiwi is an antioxidant all-star. It offers an unusual array of health-promoting substances. One very important thing it does is it promotes heart health by helping to lower triglycerides levels and reducing platelet hyperactivity.

Other superfoods that display great health promoting properties are – oranges, pomegranates, pumpkins, wild salmon, soy, spinach, tea, tomatoes, turkey (skinless breast), walnuts, and low-fat or nonfat yogurt.

I’m not a doctor or nutrition authority, I have become very well-informed about nutrition and healthy eating habits in the last nine years. My Mother died of cancer at age 68, she never got to see her grandson. I made the decision I would feed my family real food as often as possible. We aren’t perfect so I can’t say I’m a total health nut, but I do the best I can.

Today, I’m cautious about the food we eat. I do a lot of research on the Internet, subscribe to several newsletters about alternative health issues.

I suggest that you educate yourself and your family about your health. If your doctor practices conventional medicine and is prescribing prescription drugs, scrutinize his decisions. Have a serious talk with him about nutrition and preventative care. If you don’t get the answers you want, get a second opinion, preferably from a naturopathic doctor. No one said it would be easy, I know that and while we do try to eat right, we are not prefect and our food today is far from being perfect so we will have to take some daily food supplements like vitamin C or Omega3 rich fish oil pills.

Shelled hemp seeds ready to make Hemp milkMany people have tried soy milk or almond milk in their exploration to find alternatives to cow milk. and lately we hear of the amazing power of hemp foods, and the power of hemp nutrition to meet an incredibly wide variety of human health needs.

The seed of the hemp plant is currently illegal to grow in most countries in the world, even though there is no THC in the seeds of the plant. THC is the active compound in marijuana that makes people “stoned”. It is legal, however, to import the seed from Canada and other countries where it legal to grow hemp plants for agriculture, so that we can use this amazing food in our everyday diets.

I’m a big fan of hemp seeds myself, since they are very high on protein, and they have an almost ideal ratio of essential fatty acids for humans, including the elusive “omega 3s” that most people in the western cultures are sorely lacking.

Common Hemp seeds contain more than 23 minerals and trace elements, including powerful blood sugar stabilizing minerals such as chromium.

In his book Fats that Heal, Fats the Kill, Udo Erasmus claims:

Hemp seed is the Number 1 food meant for human consumption. It’s THAT nutritious, and that complete!

You can blend hemp seeds with water, a little Himalaya salt, and/or some sweetener like stevia or honey, and you will have a most fantastic tasting hemp milk. Alternatively, Hemp Seeds can be eaten raw with a spoon, or mixed into a highly-nutritious oak meals and Muesli.

The hulled seed is also very soft, so there is no need for any special processing prior to eating. You can sprinkle hemp seeds on your green salad, or onto your fruit salad (they easily go both ways).

It is well known amongst Raw Foodists that eating too many nuts or seeds can be rather unbalancing, and they often therefore “soak” them for 4-12 hours prior to eating, to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors. Nevertheless, Hemp seeds do not need to be soaked in any way to be completely edible and digestible.

You can find Hemp seeds in many health food stores. I mostly blend the seeds into hemp seed milk smoothies, mixed with raw cacao powder, and some of the various green superfood powders on the market today.

To be more economical, search for the 5 pound bags available from many places online. Store the seeds in the freezer, and they will last for many months.

Some additional blending addition suggestions for making delicious hemp shakes:

  • Add a fresh coconut including the juice and the white coconut meat
  • Add fresh or frozen fruit, such as peaches, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, bananas, etc.
  • Add 5-20 raw organic cacao beans or “cacao nibs” for a chocolaty nutritious treat
  • Add 1-3 tablespoons of raw cacao powder to make a non-dairy chocolate milk. This increases the protein content of the already-high hemp milk, since for every 2 tablespoons of raw cacao powder you use, you get 6 additional grams of raw protein.

A Word About Evolution

What is Evolution and where does it get us?

Charles Darwin - 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882According to Charles Darwin, evolution is what supposedly brought us down from the trees and from the cave man to the computer geek. That's a long way, although only during the past 100 years we really made progress, with one extraordinary exception that is, and that was Greece. Right, the Greeks had warm and cold water in their private bathrooms 3000 years ago, while the rest of the world still peed on trees and bathed in the river. Anyway, that's another story. Evolution hasn't stopped in the last 11 million years and we can therefore relay on the fact that it won't stop tomorrow or the day after. The reason for that is that we are not done yet! A 100 000 years ago, the cave man thought that evolution probably had finished here, if he ever knew what evolution is, and he would have torn he's wife on her hair into the cave, thought her what he likes and what not, and that was evolution for him. But he actually had a good point of view, because he was looking at the monkeys in the trees. He was looking at how they behaved and he was laughing and thinking to himself how evolved he was, compared to those monkeys. Today we're looking at the same monkeys and we're thinking the same things, how is that for evolution?

The point is that during the past we evolved towards an unknown destination. Nobody can say or know what "the big plan" behind all that is, but we can relay on the fact that it isn't over yet. Even though many seem to believe that in December 2012 the end of the world will come, I'm already writing "Happy 2013" cards for my friends. We are not finished human beings and we have to evolve further, there is no way around that. I hear many voices talking about how old people will get who are today 20 years old. Most people I know estimate that today's young people will become about a 100 – 120 years old in average. I would top it with 150+ if the food they eat gets healthy and they take food supplements on daily bases.

If you think this is impossible, think back a bit, 300 years ago the average age of a human being was around 40 years, the people living then would never have believed that humans can get older than 100 years and yet; look at us today!

I know of a doctor who makes house visits in the countryside in China, the man is 103 years old! The regions where people get so old are interesting for scientists who study the anti aging process in these people. And that is more or less the way that superfoods got discovered. In some higher regions of China and in the Himalaya are many such villages where people get very old more or less without or with very little help of western medicine and pharmaceutics. In these region we find Goji Berries. You must have heard about those anti aging berries. Goji Berries are loaded with antioxidants, they contain 25 300 ORAC per 100 gram. (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) That's a lot. Antioxidants are fighting the free radicals in our bodies. The free radicals are what makes us age and makes us wrinkle. So the best known anti aging drugs today are antioxidants. 

But with Goji Berries, better known to the western world as "Wolfberries"* having around 25 000 ORAC, there are even better foods out there carrying even more of those anti aging angels. look at the Acai berry for example. The Story Of Li Ching Yuen

Li Ching Yuen - Anti Aging with Goji BerriesHere’s a little story about Goji Berries. Li, Ching-Yuen or Li,Ching-Yun was a Chinese herbalist, martial artist and tactical advisor. It is claimed that he was born in 1734 while disputed records say he was born on 1677. His lifespan of 199 or 256 years, in any case, far exceed the longest confirmed lifespan of 122 years and 164 days.

The story goes that Li Ching-Yuen was supposedly born in 1677 in Qi Jiang Xian, Szechun province. He spent most of his life in the mountain ranges gathering herbs and knowledge of longevity methods. In 1749 when he was already 71 years old, he moved to Kai Xian to join the Chinese Army to be a teacher of the martial arts and a tactical advisor.

Professor Wu Chung Chieh, from the Chengdu University, found records from the Chinese Imperial Government congratulating Li Ching Yuen on his 150th birthday in 1827.

In 1927, 100 years later, he was invited by General Yang Sen in Wang Xien, Szechuan. There the general was fascinated at his youthfulness, strength and prowess despite his advancing age. His famous portrait was taken there.

In May 1933, he died of natural causes. General Yang Sen after Li’s death investigated the truth about his age. and later wrote the report and got published. Witnesses interviewed from his home province remembered already seeing Li when they were children and others reported that Li had already been friends with their grandfathers.

Sad to say this story will continue to be a longevity myth and not treated as a fact. His actual lifespan will never be firmly established due to the fact that the census documentation of rural 17th century China is so sparse with comparisons to modern records. Though his story has well been documented in a featured documentary by National Geographic magazine in 1930. Oh well, but at least one secret to Li’s longevity is already produced right now.
