Superfoods For Health

What are Superfoods? Superfoods are whole foods. Whole foods are foods that are unprocessed or are only minimally processed in a way that none or little of the nutrition has been altered or destroyed. Canned foods for example, are processed foods. Cooked foods are also processed foods and therefore less healthy than raw foods.

Superfoods are not necessarily some exotic fruits. Apples have been proven to be potent weapons against cancer, heart disease, asthma, and type 2 diabetes but other fruits and vegetables have some remarkable health benefits as well. Or strawberries and raspberries for instance; they contain a compound called ellagic acid, one of the best cancer fighters nature ever created. When you’re eating these fruits the ellagic acid enters the bloodstream and will help to destroy cancer cells on contact.

Other “Superfoods” which can improve your health, boost your immune system to a healthy level and take care of anti aging are:

  • Beans such as pinto beans, black beans and lentils are another series of foods to lower cholesterol, combat heart disease, stabilize blood sugar, reduce obesity, relieve constipation and lessen the risk of cancer.
  • Blueberries are a small but mighty nutritional force. They combine more powerful antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetables. Although they have many health benefits, the one thing they are known for most is the ability to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Broccoli is a great cancer fighter and very beneficial in many other ways as well.
  • Avocados are believed to help lower cholesterol and they are rich in magnesium (an essential nutrient for healthy bones)
  • Dark chocolate may come as a real surprise to most, as being one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It’s a source of phytonutrients which act as an antioxidant that helps protect our DNA and inhibits the growth of unwanted blood vessels. Make sure you buy the right kind of dark chocolate, one that isn’t as processed and has a high cacao content. Raw cacao beans or nibs are even better since the chocolate needs to be heated up.
  • Garlic and onions are great cancer fighting foods
  • Honey is beneficial in maintaining optimal blood-sugar levels. Honey should be consumed as is, fresh from the spoon. adding honey to your tea will destroy most of it’s benefits.
  • Kiwi is an antioxidant all-star. It offers an unusual array of health-promoting substances. One very important thing it does is it promotes heart health by helping to lower triglycerides levels and reducing platelet hyperactivity.

Other superfoods that display great health promoting properties are – oranges, pomegranates, pumpkins, wild salmon, soy, spinach, tea, tomatoes, turkey (skinless breast), walnuts, and low-fat or nonfat yogurt.

I’m not a doctor or nutrition authority, I have become very well-informed about nutrition and healthy eating habits in the last nine years. My Mother died of cancer at age 68, she never got to see her grandson. I made the decision I would feed my family real food as often as possible. We aren’t perfect so I can’t say I’m a total health nut, but I do the best I can.

Today, I’m cautious about the food we eat. I do a lot of research on the Internet, subscribe to several newsletters about alternative health issues.

I suggest that you educate yourself and your family about your health. If your doctor practices conventional medicine and is prescribing prescription drugs, scrutinize his decisions. Have a serious talk with him about nutrition and preventative care. If you don’t get the answers you want, get a second opinion, preferably from a naturopathic doctor. No one said it would be easy, I know that and while we do try to eat right, we are not prefect and our food today is far from being perfect so we will have to take some daily food supplements like vitamin C or Omega3 rich fish oil pills.

They contain everything your body needs to stay healthy and fight off disease and aging. There are many different kinds of superfoods. The term superfood has been created by dieticians and nutritionists to describe the foods that have great nutritional value or medicinal qualities. More and more people are realizing that their diseases and illnesses are being caused by the processed foods they are eating which contain too much sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and salt and that food is natures very own medicine. Avocado: The avocado is a superfood from Central and South America but is now grown in many tropical areas around the world. Some amazing facts about this superfood include that 75% of its calories consist of good monosaturated fat, it contains 60% more potassium than the average banana and also contains a lot of vitamin B, E and K. The avocado also contains a lot of fiber.

Eating a lot of avocado has shown to be beneficial for cholesterol levels in the blood. People eating avocados for just seven days experienced a 22% drop in their harmful cholesterol levels in one scientific study.

Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes are only distantly related to normal potatoes, it is actually a root, and they are much healthier for people than normal potatoes. Sweet potatoes are rich in complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, Vitamin B, C and beta-carotene. Sweet potatoes are a very important super-food not only because they contain so much nutrition (twice as much as a normal potato) but because as mentioned earlier they are rich in complex corbohydrates. Foods that contain simple carbohydrates cause the human body to have a spike in insulin which causes more fat to be produced and stored. This is one of the biggest reasons people gain weigh so easily. By eating sweet potatoes and other superfoods that contain complex carbohydrates people can enjoy carbohydrates without suffering the associated weight gain.

There are many more natural superfoods including the acai, inca, goji and mulberry, broccoli, eggs, fresh spinach, wheat and barley grass, raw cacao, salmon, olive oil, spirulina, chia seeds, mango, papaya and other tropical fruits. All of these contain many different kinds of vitamins and minerals to help your body stay strong and healthy, they help you fight illness and disease and delay aging. In addition many of these superfoods have specific qualities. Whether its many antioxidants, plenty of fiber, appetite suppression or an energy or libido boost. You are encouraged to search out those specific superfoods that fit in with your specific health goals. In any case you can only do your body good by eating a broad range of superfoods.

An easy way to make sure that you are eating healthy natural superfoods is by sticking to the outside aisles at supermarkets, this is where all the fresh produce is kept. You can also visit farmers markets and health food stores where they are sure to stock all the best superfoods and the staff are usually very helpful and knowledgeable about superfood and natural supplements.
