There is a lot of buzz about acai, the benefits of the little power packed berry and what it can do. You may have been wondering if this is all true, or if it is a great deal of hype. There is actually some truth to the excitement about acai berry- but maybe not for the reasons that most people think. Also, there are other foods, other "super foods" that you should know about so that you can bring them into your overall weight loss and nutrition plan that can help you succeed. Understanding exactly what the benefits are of these foods and why, as well as what they can actually do for you is important though. To make an informed choice you need to know the facts, and actually, in spite of some of the bad practices, there is some truth to the hype about the acai berry in regards to healthy weight loss.

Acai berry itself is a very healthy food- that much is very true. While no single food can change your physique or enhance your life, a complete and balanced diet rich in antioxidants can really boost any health and fitness program, especially weight loss geared ones. So, given the fact that acai does in fact have ten times more antioxidants than red grapes, it seems reasonable to assert that it is a good food to include in your diet. However, it is not the only such food. There are a number of foods that are classified as "super foods" and the common thread in most of these is that antioxidants, fiber or essential fatty acids. It is always best to discuss major diet changes with your doctor before you try them, however, just including a few of these foods in your daily diet is not something that is going to impact you in a negative way. On the contrary, you may find a new snack food or side dish favorite that really is as good for you as it tastes.

The next superfood we will have a look at is Barley. Rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, barley not only helps by enabling the digestive tract to be more healthy, but can in some cases reduce the risk of certain cancers. Soluble fiber is great for those on active weight loss regimens, because it does help the body to metabolize fats and carbohydrates more efficiently.

Nuts and seeds are also a commonly overlooked food- many people avoid them in weight loss plans due to the fat content, but, the benefits of the nutrients far outweigh that risk. When used in moderation, nuts and seeds are a wonderful addition to almost any dish that can power pack proteins and other heart healthy nutrients- as well as fighting the signs of aging.

On the whole, the "superfoods" are great additions to an existing well balanced diet. Most physicians do not recommend that you go on fasts or anything rash like that, so, the "Peanut diet" or exclusion diets such as that are not likely key. But add some of these superfoods to your diet and you'll see some results in your overall health.

The ORAC scale, or the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, measures the antioxidant levels of a superfoods. ORAC is a measurement of how much antioxidants contained in the particular food were able to destroy oxygen free radicals in a test tube. The higher the ORAC number the higher the antioxidant capacity of the food. All antioxidant capacity measures are estimated by Ferric Reducing Power and are expressed as Micromole Trolox Equivalent µ(TE) per 100 grams or 3.53 ounces. The ORAC measurement is accurate up to ±5%.

There is a whole list of superfoods that score high on the ORAC scale but the fruit that scores by far the highest is the Acai berry, coming from the rain forests of Brazil. The purple little berries grow on palm trees and are loaded with antioxidants, polyphenols, essential fatty omega acids and the full range of amino acids essential to our health. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are needed for muscle building.
