The Healing Power of Walnuts

Do You Like Nuts?

Walnuts are SuperfoodsAre you aware that one of the best superfoods you can get today are different kinds of nuts?  I hear you asking; how can they possibly be healthy for you?. Just look at the label on any Nuts package where it states that they are loaded with fat and sodium. Now how can they be superfoods? Let alone one with healing powers?

Let me tell you a little bit about nuts, especially about all the fat in walnuts. Walnuts are low in saturated fat – the bad fattyacids – and high in the other two, polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids – the good fats;the ones your body needs to function best. Walnuts are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. This is the one we're told to get by eating lots of fish, especially wild caught salmon. I don't know about you but trying to eat wild salmon two to three times a week to get my allowance of Omega-3 fatty acids can be quite expensive. Not too many people have the time and the money to prepare a nice salmon steak several times a week. That's but only one reason why walnuts are good for us.

Another reason why Walnuts are great,a reason I have personally witnessed, and research has shown, that including healthy fats from walnuts in your diet can be beneficial to people trying to lose weight because the give you a feeling of fullness. Eat a handful of walnuts with a small glass of water. Wait about 20-30 minutes and see if you are still hungry. They will fill you up and keep you from eating to much. So whenever you get hungry in between meals, snack on some unsalted walnuts or cashew nuts for that matter and some raisins and keep away from eating unhealthy junk foods. It might not feel all that great in the first few days but you will get used to it very quickly and you will start to enjoy both; the weight loss as well as the nuts and raisins.

What else are walnuts good for?

The FDA has stated that walnuts are helpful in lowering cholesterol levels and help preventing heart diseases. Walnuts also lower blood pressure by scrubbing your veins and arteries clean and remove plaque buildup. The easier your blood flows through your body the less your heart has to work.

Furthermore, Walnuts contain high amounts of plant protein,Fibers, Vitamin B6, Folacin, vitamin E and Thiamin, thus many of the nutrients our body needs to function perfectly. Walnuts also help to supply the skin with the vital nutrients, the skin needs to rebuild damaged tissue. Walnuts therefore provide a natural way to help combat the signs of aging.

Regular Walnuts cost about $6 a pound. You can also get organic Walnuts for about $7 a pound. In any case, this beats the cost of most heart disease prescriptions and diet pill programs and I would recommend to go fro the organic ones! Check out your local farmer's market or whole food stores.

The various nutritional benefits of walnuts are nothing new to us, they have been understood for thousands of years. We are just a little slow in learning; are we?. I recommend you give some Walnuts a try. You can get all the health benefits of walnuts from just a handful of this superfood every day. Enjoy.

Superfoods To Fight Arthritis

Every Type of Arthritis demands certain superfoods

Fighting Arthritis with SuperfoodsPeople in the western world suffer from all kinds of illnesses and many of them are related to what we eat! One of the most spread disease is arthritis. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, or the deterioration of cartilage surrounding the bones. This form causes the bones to rub against each other, resulting in pain, inflammation and difficulties in moving the respective limbs. The second form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. This kind is an autoimmune disease where the joint linings become inflamed due to dysfunction of the immune system. It can become very serious and tends to effect a higher percentage in women than in men.

Arthritis is a condition that affects nearly 70 million people around the globe. The major complaint by people who suffer from arthritis is joint pain. Pain is the most common constant and may be localized to the joint(s) affected. Treatment can vary widely, based on the severity of the arthritis and on what type of arthritis it is, and on the location of the body. While individual attention from your physician is sure necessary to best manage your unique symptoms, certain Superfoods have been discovered lately that can offer a tremendous relief for many people suffering from both types of arthritis.

Although the two forms of arthritis are different in many ways, they both are joint conditions, which can be very complex. Both involve various systems of the body and are often unpredictable in severity.  Certain superfoods and supplements can be extremly beneficial to help managing arthritis. The superfoods listed below are known to have various health benefits.

The Best Foods to Fight Arthritis!

Many foods have anti-inflammatory properties that can help fight rheumatoid arthritis. Chief among them are omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in

  • Walnuts
  • Flax Seeds
  • Fish and Fish Oil

The fatty acids, EPA and DHA, are converted by the body into substances that fight inflammation. Studies show that they reduce joint stiffness, swelling and tenderness. The best food choices are fatty fish like

  • Wild Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Blue Fin Tuna

Omega-3 fats have recently been found to be present in a variety of food products, such as

  • Organic Eggs.

Antioxidants are another category of substances that fight inflammation. They are plant chemicals found in fruits, vegetables and other natural foods.

  • Green Tea

in particular, is loaded with powerful antioxidants called polyphenols, which have been shown to reduce inflammation. Green tea also contains healing substances, like the antioxidant EGCG, fluoride, catechins and tannins. Studies show that drinking four cups a day can prevent the onset of osteoarthritis, and reduce the severity if you already have it.

As it turns out, one of the fieriest foods you can eat actually has anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Chilly Peppers

Chilly contains capsaicin which inhibits inflammation. One study showed that capsaicin cream applied topically reduced pain in sufferers of osteoarthritis. Careful though, you might want to discuss this treatment with your doctor first, and feel free to add chillies to your meals too. I always say, "The hotter, the greater the benefits."

Pain Saving Food Supplements

It is important for everyone to get the recommended daily dose of vitamins and minerals, but arthritis sufferers could see added benefits. Vitamin C is known to prevent the breakdown of cartilage, which is often effected by arthritis. When it comes to vitamins and minerals, however, more is not always better. Tell your doctor what supplements you are taking and don't go over the recommendations. Too much vitamin C was shown to exacerbate arthritis of the knee.

Vitamin D is important for bone and joint health. It also may help build collagen, one of the building blocks of joints. You can get this vitamin by spending 10 to 15 minutes in the sun for at least two or three days of the week, this will store enough vitamin D in your body to be protected.

Vitamin E also acts as an antioxidant to fight inflammation. Nuts and seeds and avocados are rich in vitamin E. If you combine these foods with omega-3 rich fish, you may gain extra benefits. Studies show that consuming these two nutrients together may boost their ability to fight inflammation and therefore reduce the pain dramatically.

If you suffer from any form of arthritis, changing your diet immediately is in any case a smart move. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean plant based proteins are very important for you!. These foods will provide you with a variety of antioxidants that can promote good health in all aspects. Then add on the superfoods and food supplements and you have the perfect overall diet for fighting off arthritis.

Prevention of Artritis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can both not be completely prevented but we can reduce the risks of becoming an arthritis victim by becoming physically more active exercise regularly and participating in physical therapies. Weight loss is also essential for obese people suffering from arthritis and as we've been discussing earlier, eating healthy foods and superfoods. Anybody who feels chronically pain in certain joints should see a physician and seek early diagnosis because the earlier the treatment is started, the better is the prognosis of healing

The New Top 10 Superfoods List

The New Top 10 Everyday Superfoods List

Purslane is rich on Omega 3 Fatty AcidsOften patients ask me what they should eat and what the best food for their nutrition is, I have to remind them of the fact that there is no one single superfood or even a healthy food group that works like a magic bullet for your health. Rather, eating a wide variety of foods, consisting mainly of organic fresh fruits and vegetables, is the most savvy way to practice a smart nutrition of the body. Lately new research in the field of nutrition shows that certain foods stand above the rest as sources of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. These are the foods we now like to call "Superfoods".

Not many people are aware of what really matters, when it comes to making healthy food choices. Common knowledge is that you can't go wrong with broccoli, spinach and oranges. And then? Many, for not to say most of the healthiest foods in the world are constantly overlooked. I have evaluated the latest research on nutrients to create an updated list of everyday superfoods that should be, in one way or the other, on your nutritional diet for most days of the week.

  1. Cinnamon – This absolutely must be the hottest stuff in town! With more than a quarter of a million ORAC antioxidant units per 100 gram it is very rich in antioxidants! Cinnamon has long been used for  cooking in Middle Eastern cuisines,. Cinnamon has proven to lower blood sugar levels, triglycerides and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels. Just a quarter teaspoon every second day sprinkled over coffee or cereal is beneficial. I am using it in tea as well.
  2. Goji Berries – These berries have been used as medicinal food for centuries in Tibet and in China. The sweet tasting Goji berries have more antioxidant power than most foods on the planet. Studies have shown that they also lowers insulin resistance, and therefore lowers the risk of diabetes. Eat these red and tasty berries as is or add them to cereal or yogurt or put a handful into the salad every day.
  3. Pomegranate Juice -A sticky red juice, loaded with Vitamin C. Only a small glass of this sweet-tart juice each day may decrease your systolic blood pressure by 21 percent over the course of a year!
  4. Cabbage – A Stanford University study showes that Cabbage helps to increase the production of cancer-fighting enzymes in our body. This happens thanks to a chemical called sulforaphane. Eat cabbage on sandwiches in place of lettuce for a satisfying crunch or make a tangy coleslaw using cider vinegar and yogurt instead of mayo. Fine cut cabbage and add it to any salad. Not only does it look good, it is also very beneficial for your digestion.
  5. Guava– Is a tropical fruit containing more lycopene, the very antioxidant that fights prostate cancer, than either tomatoes or watermelon. It is furthermore loaded with organic fiber and potassium. The best way to eat guava is fresh. The seeds and rind of the fruit are also edible.
  6. Beets – Naturally sweet, this often-overlooked vegetable is high in folate and betaine, which reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering homocysteine levels in the blood. You'll gain the greatest benefit by eating this colorful veggie raw. Just peel the skin and grate into salads, pasta and grain dishes. The leaves are edible too-saute them like spinach.
  7. Purslane – Is a very common green in the Chinese, the Mexican, Thai and the Greek kitchen, this little green leafs contain more heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids than any other plant know today. It also contains high levels of the cancer-fighting antioxidant melatonin. Find the crisp, lemony leaves at farmers' and ethnic markets and add them to your salads.
  8. Pumpkin Seeds – Just one ounce of roasted Pumkin seeds provide you 150 mg magnesium. Reaching the daily requirement of 420 mg of this vital nutrient has been shown to reduce the risk of death by 40 percent. Eating the whole seeds also provides a healthy dose of fiber.
  9. Swiss Chard – Lately a Harvard study has shown this leafy green protects the health of our eyes with abundant levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. These chemicals absorb shortwave light that would otherwise damage the retina. Saute a bunch of the mild leaves with garlic in extra virgin olive oil and serve alongside chicken or fish or fine cut them into your salads.
  10. Dried Prunes – This healthy super food fights cancer causing cell damage with an abundance of the antioxidants, neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid. Grab a few of these sweet dried fruits as a snack or gussy them up by stuffing them with goat cheese and serving as an appetizer but take care not to eat too many at once as this might have an unwanted cleansing effect of your digesting system….

I hope this list of everyday superfoods has reminded you of a few things you haven't eaten in a while and revealed new nutrition information and superfood stars for you to try. Remember, no one food can provide all the nutrition you need for your optimal health, only variety is the key to a successful disease-fighting diet. Add these new superfoods to your shopping list tomorrow, and your body and mind will both enjoy the benefits for many years to come!

Introducing Superfoods to You and Your Family

What are Superfoods?

Raw Food Healthy Food - CarrotsIt is commonly known that our bodies require food for essential nutrients and energy, but some foods are better than others, and some are even better than that. These foods at the top of the list are known as superfoods, which are rich in vitamins and have been proven to improve your health and reduce your risk for many diseases.

What are the benefits of superfoods?

Superfoods are especially good for you because they’re rich in vitamins, minerals, and extra compounds that are good for your health and easy to process. Things such as omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and many things that are hard to pronounce. Superfoods have been involved in scientific studies to back up the health claims made for them.

How do I get these foods into my diet?

To begin using superfoods in your diet, start slowly. Change your snack of potato chips or candy to a cup of low fat flavored yogurt, and trade out lunch for a baked chicken sandwich with light mayo, a side salad, and some string cheese. Once you feel comfortable with this change, you can incorporate more super foods.

Getting your family and friends involved will provide a support system and make things even easier. It is a very simple change to make, and the benefits you’ll reap are priceless, but it does require that you do it and keep up with it. Don’t change your habits just long enough to loose a few pounds. I promise you’ll be much happier if you stick with it.

What about getting my kids to eat healthy?

The easiest way to get a child to eat healthy is to start young. Every parent has to go through the process of finding out what their kids love, what they will tolerate, and what will end up on the wall. This happens whether you choose to feed your child healthy or unhealthy food. The problem arises when you decide to make a change for the better and your child, who is used to (and loves) their current unhealthy eating habits, resists with full force.

But changing the eating habits of your whole family doesn’t have to end in tears with every meal. Just like anyone, kids need to be introduced to healthy eating slowly. This can be a positive change that you go through together, rather than against each other. There are just a few basic rules.

Pick your Battles

If your child loves carrots but feeds broccoli to the dog when you’re not looking, don’t fuss. Don’t cause a fight that will push them further and further into rebellion. Don’t give them broccoli for dinner. Instead mix a small amount in a homemade salad dressing, or a smoothie. Someday, their tastes may change and they decide to they love broccoli. It happens all the time.

Include your child in the preparation.

Many children love to assist in the kitchen. They feel important and it creates a great bonding opportunity. So let them help by washing or tearing vegetables, help them set the table, or even ask them to help you choose the food to make (within boundaries.) If your child is to the point they hate helping, ask them very nicely to do small things for you and give them lots of praise on what a great job they did without patronizing them. It helps build their willingness to do it again.

Make it fun

One way to encourage kids both to help in the kitchen AND to eat the food, is to make the preparation fun. Make the food into fun shapes or play kids music while you prepare. You could make the preparation into a game, make sound effects and be as silly as you want. You’ll be surprised to discover that you want to be in the kitchen more and more, too.

As with all diet changes, getting your child to eat healthy will take a little bit of work, some understanding, a healthy dose of creativity, and a whole lot of patience. It will also take compromises here and there. The end result is well worth the battle, though. So keep it up and one day your child will thank you.

What Are Superfoods and Why Are They So Important?

The Health Benefits of Superfoods

Nutrient Rich Raw Food is Healthy FoodIt has become hard these days to get all the necessary  nutrients our body needs in the normal food we eat every day. With the steadily increasing selection of fast food burger and fish shops, and restaurants serving huge portions of not very healthy food, it's hard to get your head on straight and eat the right things. Even though it is very important for your health to get the right nutrition in your daily diet, it's hard to know what exactly those right foods are. Let me tell you something about Superfoods and explain the difference between 'normal food' and Superfoods.

Your body and your mind need a certain amount and combination of nutrients to function at the highest possible level. You usally get these nutrients by eating food, but here is the catch; not all food provides the same nutrition. Some foods are better than others. Some foods are even bad for your health, and eating them can increase your risks for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetis and more. Some foods will give you good energy and the nutrients you need. And then there are the best foods which are extraordinary rich in nutrients; these foods are called superfoods. These superfoods contain various substances such as minerals, antioxidants and enzymes. We need to have theses substances because they have shown to improve our overall health and reduce the risk of getting sick. We don't need to get all of the diseases that plague people all over the civilized world today, we just need to eat the right foods.

We define disease as an impairment of health by a condition of the body or mind that causes dysfunction. We can define health as a condition of the body that is free from disease. If you eat food that is unhealthy for you and doesn't contain the nutrients you need, it can lead to malnutrition. If you have malnutrition, you may not even notice it but it could lead to disease or great risk for disease.

Superfoods are especially good for you because they are so rich in the minerals and nutrients that your body needs. Since they also contain substances that have been proven to improve your health, they have a huge impact to your general health. There are so many benefits to eating Superfoods that there really is no excuse not to work them into your daily diet. Superfoods contain compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, phytochemicals (natural chemicals found in plants) and dietary fiber. All Superfoods have been clinically tested and the health claims have been proven.

If you add just a few Superfoods to your diet you can improve your health by a lot. You will keep your heart healthy, boost your immune system to stay free of illness, find that you can lose weight easier, keep from getting diabetes, and prevent certain types of cancer and so much more. Keeping Superfoods in your diet will allow you to age much easier without all of the little health bumps in the road.

If your diet consists of eating too many calories and unhealthy foods, you run the risk of becoming obese. When you eat bad foods, they may also provide you with the nutrients you need, but will also do damage to your body at the same time. Eating bad foods once in awhile will not do any damage, but if you make a routine out of it, eventually the ill effects will begin to surface. If you stick to Superfoods then your body will get all of the nutrients it needs without the extra calories and unhealthy ingredients.
